Which cockroach carries her egg case until the eggs are nearly ready to hatch?
The German cockroach. The female keeps the ootheca attached to her abdomen almost to hatching, so few egg cases are ever exposed to treatment. Oriental and American cockroaches drop theirs, and the egg case wall shields the eggs from residual sprays.
Where do Oriental cockroaches usually turn up in an Ontario building?
Cool, damp, dark low areas: floor drains, sumps, basements, crawlspaces and sewer connections. They are dark, sluggish and poor climbers. Their presence points at a moisture or drain defect, and the population returns unless that defect is corrected.
Bed bug development: what has to happen before each moult?
Every one of the five nymphal stages needs a complete blood meal before it can moult. Eggs are cemented into cracks and survive many contact sprays, which is why treatment is repeated and must reach harbourages rather than open surfaces.
What evidence actually confirms a bed bug harbourage during an inspection?
Dark faecal spotting that bleeds into fabric, cast skins, eggshells and live insects in seams, bed frames, headboards and baseboard gaps. Bites alone never confirm bed bugs, because skin reactions vary between people and mimic several other causes.
Carpenter ants or subterranean termites: what does the debris tell you?
Carpenter ants push out coarse wood shavings mixed with insect body parts, and their galleries are smooth and clean. Termites pack galleries with soil and faeces and build mud shelter tubes, leaving no shavings behind.
Why is a repellent residual spray the wrong choice for Pharaoh ants?
Repellent residuals split the colony, and queens bud off into new satellite colonies that spread further through the building. Use slow-acting baits that foragers carry back to brood and queens, and remove competing food sources first.
Which termite is established in Ontario, and what does it depend on?
The eastern subterranean termite, Reticulitermes flavipes. Workers need constant moisture and a link to soil or another moisture source, so they build shelter tubes across foundations and piers to reach wood without exposure to dry air.
Swarming termite or swarming ant? Give the three checks.
Antennae: straight and bead-like on a termite, elbowed on an ant. Waist: broad and thick on a termite, sharply pinched on an ant. Wings: four of roughly equal length on a termite, longer forewings on an ant.
What damage pattern points to lyctid powderpost beetles?
Small round exit holes in the sapwood of large-pored hardwoods such as oak, ash and hickory, with fine flour-like frass sifting from them. They do not attack softwood framing, so look at flooring, trim, panelling or furniture.
How does house mouse feeding behaviour change the way you place devices?
Mice nibble small amounts at many points inside a small home range and investigate new objects readily. Use many small bait or trap placements set close together along runways instead of a few large widely spaced stations.
Why does the first baiting attempt against Norway rats often fail?
Rats are neophobic and avoid unfamiliar objects and food for days. Leave unset traps or untreated bait in place until feeding is established, then treat. Rushing the placement teaches the population to avoid your stations.
Norway rat or roof rat? Name the quickest field checks.
A Norway rat has a blunt muzzle, small ears and a tail shorter than its head and body, and burrows at ground level. A roof rat has a pointed muzzle, large ears and a tail longer than head and body, and nests high.
Cluster flies keep appearing in an attic each autumn. What actually works?
Exclusion and vacuuming. Cluster fly larvae parasitize earthworms outdoors, so there is no indoor breeding source and sanitation changes nothing. Seal soffits, vents and window frames, and time any exterior perimeter treatment to late summer or early fall, before the flies move in to overwinter.
Carpet beetle or webbing clothes moth? Read the evidence in the fabric.
Carpet beetle larvae are bristly and leave shed skins with irregular grazed damage. Clothes moth larvae spin silken tubes or webbing and feed in dark undisturbed folds. Both cases need vacuuming, laundering or removal of the infested article.
Which pesticides may a Structural class exterminator not use in Ontario?
Class B pesticides that are fumigant gases, chloropicrin, termiticides and herbicides. Everything else, including other fumigants and suspensions in air, is authorized for structural exterminations under the Table to section 53 of O. Reg. 63/09.
A client asks a Structural class licensee to treat termites. What do you say?
Termiticides sit outside the Structural class, so the job needs a licensed exterminator of the Termite class. Plant pests inside a greenhouse likewise need the Greenhouse/Interior Plant class. Performing work outside your licence class is an offence.
Name the outdoor work a Structural class licensee may still perform.
Under section 71 (1) of O. Reg. 63/09: pests of farm animals for an agricultural operation, mammals, birds or arthropods on or near a waste disposal site, and animals that bite, sting, are venomous or carry disease.
Which sign goes up before a Class B suspension in air is released indoors?
Sign B, the structural extermination warning sign, posted on the outside of every door leading into the building. All other doors are locked from outside first, and the building must be vacant of people and non-target animals.
What has to be written on the structural extermination warning sign?
DANGER, the pesticide name, its Pest Control Products Act registration number, the date and time airing out will begin, the licensed exterminator's name, the company name and an emergency telephone number, together with DO NOT ENTER and DO NOT REMOVE THIS SIGN UNTIL AIRING OUT IS COMPLETE.
Who else must be present for a Class B suspension in air or non-gas fumigant job?
A second licensed exterminator whose licence authorizes that extermination must be present under section 67 of O. Reg. 63/09. Anyone entering before the building is clear needs adequate respiratory protection and must be accompanied by another equally protected person.
Zinc phosphide, strychnine or 4-aminopyridine used indoors: what record is required?
Record every location where the pesticide is placed, during the extermination, and keep that record at least two years. Give the operator a copy, provide it to the Director on request, remove all product when finished and dispose of carcasses daily.
What must be displayed at a pesticide storage area?
Sign G, the storage warning sign, prominently displayed near the area and at every entrance, plus a posted list of emergency telephone numbers for the fire department, hospital and poison control centre.
Product is left in the van overnight. What does O. Reg. 63/09 require?
Unsupervised pesticides must be locked in an enclosed compartment or the vehicle parked where the public cannot reach it, and the vehicle must display Sign G. An operator that commonly keeps pesticides in a vehicle overnight must also give written notice to the fire department where the vehicle is normally parked at night.
Pesticide reaches a floor drain during a treatment. Who is notified first?
The Ministry's Spills Action Centre, immediately, at 1-800-268-6060; the line is staffed around the clock, and the municipality is also notified. Contain the material and keep it out of sewers and watercourses. Theft or loss of a pesticide is reported as soon as practicable.
Crack and crevice treatment: what does that label term actually permit?
Applying small amounts of pesticide directly into cracks, expansion joints and voids where pests hide, leaving no deposit on exposed surfaces. A spot treatment is a different instruction: a limited area of surface, not an injection into a void.
Which nozzle pattern suits a baseboard line, and which suits a void?
A fan pattern lays an even band along a baseboard. A pin stream places product into a crack or void. A cone pattern covers broader surfaces for spot or broadcast work and is the wrong setting for crack and crevice treatment.
When is a dust the better choice than a liquid indoors?
In dry undisturbed voids such as wall cavities, behind switch plates and under fixed equipment, where liquids run off or cannot reach. Apply a barely visible film; heavy piles repel insects and stop them walking through the deposit.
Why keep gel bait placements away from residual sprays and cleaners?
Residues and strong cleaners contaminate the bait and cause cockroaches to avoid it. Place small gel spots close to harbourage and runways, replenish as they are consumed, and keep baited and sprayed zones separate.
What does a ULV fogger actually achieve inside a structure?
It fills the airspace with very fine droplets that kill exposed insects on contact and leave little residual protection. The space must be vacated, and re-entry waits for the ventilation and re-entry period stated on the label.
Sprayer output has crept upward since last season. What is the usual cause?
Worn nozzle orifices, which enlarge with use and let more product through. Recalibrate by timing the discharge into a measuring container, compare the result with the nozzle specification, and replace any nozzle outside the acceptable variance.
How should a tamper-resistant rodent bait station be deployed?
Locked, anchored so it cannot be moved, set along runways and against walls, labelled with the product and service information, and inspected on a schedule. Non-target animals and children are the reason the station is required at all.
What is the correct order for filling and mixing a spray tank?
Part fill with water, add the measured concentrate, then top up and agitate. Rinse the measuring container into the tank, keep an air gap between the hose and the liquid, and never leave the filling hose inside the tank.
You need 10 L of 0.5% spray from a 20% concentrate. How much concentrate?
250 mL. Divide the wanted strength by the concentrate strength and multiply by the batch size: 0.5 divided by 20, times 10 L, equals 0.25 L. Add water to reach exactly 10 L, then agitate.
A label calls for a 1:100 dilution. How much concentrate per litre of spray?
10 mL per litre, so a 5 L tank takes 50 mL. One part concentrate goes into 100 parts of finished spray. Check whether the label ratio is stated against water or against finished volume before mixing.
A 5 L container is labelled 240 g/L. How much active ingredient is inside?
1,200 g. Multiply concentration by volume: 240 g/L times 5 L. Maximum rates on a label are compared against the amount of active ingredient applied, not against the volume of product.
A room is 10 m by 6 m with a 3 m ceiling. What volume are you treating?
180 cubic metres. Multiply length by width by height. Space treatments are dosed per cubic metre, so a rate of 1 mL per cubic metre needs 180 mL of product for this room.
The rate is 5 L per 100 square metres. How much for an 8 m by 5 m floor?
2 L. The area is 40 square metres, and 40 divided by 100, times 5 L, equals 2 L. Mixing more than the area needs creates disposal problems and risks exceeding the label rate.
Your sprayer discharges 1 L in 2 minutes. What is the output per minute?
0.5 L per minute. Divide the volume collected by the time taken. Combine that output with your walking speed and band width to confirm the deposit matches the label rate before starting the job.
A water treatment calls for 2 mg/L. What is that in parts per million?
2 ppm, because 1 mg per litre of water equals 1 part per million. Convert every figure to the same units before multiplying; confusing litres with millilitres changes the dose by a factor of a thousand.
What comes first in structural IPM, before any product is selected?
Inspection and correct identification of the pest, then finding what supports it: food, water, harbourage and entry points. Identification drives the biology, timing and method, and a misidentified pest turns a routine job into repeated callbacks.
How do monitoring traps earn their place in a cockroach programme?
Set at wall and floor junctions, in corners and under equipment, they show where the population concentrates and whether numbers are falling. Trap counts, rather than impressions, tell you when the approach needs to change.
Which exclusion gaps matter for mice and for rats?
Mice pass through openings of roughly 6 mm and rats through roughly 12 mm. Seal with hardware cloth, sheet metal or mortar, fit door sweeps and screen vents. Materials rodents can gnaw through only delay reinfestation.
Why does sanitation decide whether a bait programme succeeds?
Competing food beats bait every time. Removing spills, sealing waste, cleaning under equipment and cutting clutter pushes pests onto the bait and lowers the carrying capacity of the site, so results hold after treatment stops.
How do pheromone traps help against stored product pests such as Indianmeal moth?
They catch male moths and point you to the infested product, which is the real target. Find and discard the source, clean the shelving and voids, then decide whether treatment is needed. Traps alone never end an infestation.
Which route of exposure accounts for most applicator exposure?
Dermal absorption, above all through the hands and forearms during mixing and loading. Gloves, long sleeves and washing before eating or smoking remove the largest share of exposure. Inhalation matters most in confined spaces and during fogging.
What determines the personal protective equipment you must wear?
The pesticide label, which states the minimum equipment for mixing, applying and cleaning up. Using a product contrary to its label is an offence under the federal Pest Control Products Act and O. Reg. 63/09. Site conditions can require more protection than the label lists, but never less.
What must be ready at a Class A, B or C pesticide storage area for emergencies?
Adequate respiratory protection and adequate protective clothing kept available for emergency use, ventilation to the outdoors for indoor storage, security controlling access, and no floor drain that leads into a sewer or watercourse.
A worker is splashed with concentrate. What is the immediate response?
Remove contaminated clothing and wash the skin with plenty of soap and water for the time the label states, then seek medical attention and bring the label. The label's first aid statements guide the treating clinician.
Why must a pesticide stay in the container it was sold in?
That container carries the label, the registration number and the first aid directions, and it is built for the product. Decanting into a drink container or unlabelled jug strips away the safety information and is prohibited under O. Reg. 63/09.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many questions are on the Ontario Structural Exterminator module exam?
OPT&C's certification exam has two parts of 50 multiple-choice questions each. The Core Manual part is one hour and closed book. The Structural Licence Category Specific Module part is one and a half hours and open book.
What score do you need to pass the Ontario Structural module exam?
You need 75% or greater on both the Core Manual exam and the Structural Licence Category Specific Module exam to be certified. OPT&C sends results within 10 working days of the exam date and does not release them by telephone.
What happens if you fail the Ontario Structural exam?
You have 12 months from your first attempt to rewrite, with a maximum of two further attempts and no more than two attempts in any six-month period. A rewrite fee applies. After three attempts you may reapply as a new applicant one year after your first attempt.
How long is Ontario structural exterminator certification good for?
You must apply to the Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks for your exterminator licence within one year of certifying. Under O. Reg. 63/09 an exterminator's licence expires on the fifth anniversary of the day it takes effect, and renewal is applied for no earlier than 90 days before expiry.
What can a Structural class licence not authorize?
It excludes Class B pesticides that are fumigant gases, chloropicrin, termiticides and herbicides, and it does not cover exterminations to control pests of plants. Termite work requires the Termite class and greenhouse plant pests require the Greenhouse/Interior Plant class.
Does OPT&C publish a pass rate or weighted content outline for the Structural module?
No. OPT&C publishes the exam format, the 75% pass mark and the rewrite rules, but not a pass rate and not a weighted blueprint for the Structural module. The study material is the Core Manual plus the Structural Licence Category Specific Module, mailed after you apply.
