  • •Both 2026 VAO papers deduct 0.25 marks for a wrong answer and 0.25 marks for a question left unshaded in the fifth OMR circle, while a declared skip costs 0.
  • •Rule 6(2)(c) of Karnataka's 2021 direct-recruitment rules requires at least 35 percent of 200 competitive marks, equal to 70 marks, only to qualify.
  • •The Kalyana-Karnataka cadre VAO written exam is scheduled for 25 October 2026, three weeks after the Residual Parent Cadre exam on 4 October 2026.
  • •Independent Karnataka VAO practice by OpenExamPrep offers 135 free questions: 68 General Knowledge, 24 English, 23 Kannada, and 20 Computer Knowledge.
  • •The Compulsory Kannada Language Test is a separate 150-mark qualifying paper requiring 50 marks, distinct from the 35-mark General Kannada section inside Paper 2.

KEA actually does publish the real previous-year VAO papers — here's where

Here is the direct answer most search results get wrong: KEA does publish the real, free, official previous-year VAO question papers — you just have to know its Question Papers archive is a separate section from its recruitment page. On KEA's 2024 Question Papers index, under the heading "VAO - 2024 ನೇಮಕಾತಿ ಪ್ರಶ್ನೆ ಪತ್ರಿಕೆಗಳು" (VAO-2024 recruitment question papers), KEA hosts three downloadable PDFs: VAO Paper 1, VAO Paper 2, and the Compulsory Kannada paper dated 29-9-2024. These are the actual printed question booklets from the last completed VAO cycle, not reconstructions.

That is genuinely the best free mock-test resource available for this exam, and most pages ranking for "VAO previous year question paper" either miss it, bury it behind a paywalled "verified" copy, or hand you a recall-based reconstruction instead. The catch is that KEA posts the papers and the answer keys in two different places on its own site: the papers live on the year-indexed Question Papers archive above, while the final answer keys live on the separate 2024 VAO recruitment results page. You need both URLs to turn the real paper into a properly self-scored mock test. Papers reach that archive only after an exam has been held, so the 2026 VAO written papers are not there yet. The 2024 set is complete and free today.

This article shows you how to use that real 2024 set as a full-length, exam-pattern-accurate mock, describes what its structure reveals (without reproducing its questions), corrects a timing error that is circulating on some exam-prep sites, works through the actual arithmetic behind the 0.25 negative-marking rule, and gives a short plan for using the one real official set whether you sit the Residual Parent Cadre paper on 4 October 2026 or the Kalyana-Karnataka paper on 25 October 2026. If you still need the base facts — is it MCQ or written, the full syllabus, or the exact exam dates — read is the Karnataka VAO exam MCQ or written and the KEA VAO 2026 syllabus, exam date, and study plan first.

What the 2024 official papers and keys actually contain

The 2024 VAO cycle had more moving parts than a single exam date. KEA's archive labels the Compulsory Kannada Language Test paper 29 September 2024 — the first sitting of that cycle's language test. Separately, a bell-timing notice on the 2024 recruitment page shows a second Compulsory Kannada sitting specifically for VAO and GTTC candidates on 26 October 2024, the day before the main written exam. Paper 1 and Paper 2 themselves were both sat on 27 October 2024. If you are timing yourself against "the 2024 VAO exam," use 27 October 2024 for the two competitive papers; the Kannada-test dates are a separate qualifying track.

The matching final answer keys are a separate pair of documents on the recruitment results page: Paper 1's key (published as a provisional key on 29 October 2024, headed "VAO, PAPER - 1, PROVISIONAL KEYS ANSWERS, VAO2710P124") and Paper 2's key (listed under the same 29 October 2024 heading; its file name is dated 30 October 2024). Paper 1's provisional key lists answer columns for eight separate codes — C1, C2, C3, C4, D1, D2, D3, and D4 — which indicates that Paper 1 was printed in at least eight booklet versions, each with its own answer order — a standard anti-copying measure. When you self-score the archived paper, note the booklet code printed on it and use only that code's column in the key. The practical lesson: memorizing "the answer to question 12 is option 3" from someone else's recalled paper is close to useless, because question 12 in your booklet may not be the same statement as question 12 in theirs. What does transfer between booklets is topic familiarity, command words, and distractor patterns — which is what the next section trains. Note that the eight-code detail comes specifically from the Paper 1 key; Paper 2's key is a separate document and was not checked for the same booklet-code structure.

An original pattern breakdown: what each section actually tests

Rule 6(2)(b) of the 2021 Karnataka direct-recruitment rules fixes the subject headings (covered in full in our syllabus guide). What follows describes item types and structure, built from that rule text, the real papers' general organization, and public post-exam discussion of the 2024 papers — it does not reproduce any actual KEA question, and none of the sample items below are from a real paper.

General Knowledge (Paper 1)

This section is not purely single-fact recall. It mixes short entity-matching items (name a peak, river, Act, scheme, or historical figure and match it to a feature, date, or location) with general-science items — one post-exam answer-key video counted about 16 in the 2024 Paper 1, some in multi-statement "which of the following statements is/are correct" form. That is an unofficial count, so check it against KEA's free copy. Rule 6(2)(b)'s "special reference to Karnataka" wording points to Karnataka-specific history, geography, and administration items alongside Indian-level Constitution and current-events items. An original example in that style:

Which Karnataka hill range is home to the state's highest peak, Mullayanagiri?
(1) Baba Budangiri hills (2) Nandi Hills (3) Nilgiri Hills (4) Brahmagiri Hills

Answer: (1). Mullayanagiri sits in the Baba Budangiri (Chandradrona) range in Chikkamagaluru district.

Current-events items tend to be recent (last 12–18 months) and Karnataka-weighted, framed around an award, appointment, scheme launch, or notable event rather than deep policy analysis.

General Kannada (Paper 2)

Grammar carries most of this section: sandhi, samasa, vibhakti pratyaya (case suffixes), linga-vachana (gender/number agreement), and alankara (figures of speech) recur as question types, usually asking you to identify or classify a given word or phrase rather than compose one. Matching items ("which of these word-meaning pairs is correctly matched?") are standard in single-best-answer MCQ papers, so they are not a sign that a practice set is fake. Expect literature questions to be brief author/work identification (Jnanpith laureates, unification-era writers) rather than critical analysis. Our free practice bank uses Kannada script in 16 of its 23 General Kannada items, usually with a romanized transliteration or English gloss in parentheses as a study aid; the real paper is not built around those aids, so attempt the General Kannada part of KEA's 2024 Paper 2 at least once.

General English (Paper 2)

Expect classic competitive-exam grammar: tense and voice transformation, direct/indirect speech, article and preposition selection, one-word substitution, idiom and phrasal-verb identification, and spotting the error in a sentence. One post-exam key-analysis video of the 2024 Paper 2 suggests a short cloze-style run of fill-in-the-blank items built around connected sentences rather than a traditional reading-comprehension passage; KEA's free copy of the paper shows the actual layout. An original example:

Identify the phrasal verb that best completes the sentence: "The committee has decided to _____ the meeting until next week."
(1) put off (2) put up (3) put in (4) put across

Answer: (1). "Put off" means to postpone.

Computer Knowledge (Paper 2)

Rule 6(2)(b) simply labels this heading "Computer Knowledge" without a published topic list, and our own study guide's chapter breakdown for this section — fundamentals and hardware, software and operating-system basics, MS Word and PowerPoint, MS Excel formulas, and internet/networking/e-governance — reflects the usual scope for this kind of state clerical-recruitment paper: office-productivity and terminology recall rather than coding or troubleshooting. An original example:

Which Excel function returns the number of cells in a range that contain numeric values?
(1) SUM (2) COUNT (3) AVERAGE (4) COUNTA

Answer: (2). COUNT counts numeric cells; COUNTA counts non-blank cells of any type.

Treat all three examples above as teaching illustrations of item style, not predictions of actual 2026 content or copies of 2024 content — they are original items written for this article.

Negative marking: the real math behind the 0.25 penalty

The 2026 VAO notification applies the same rule to both papers: a correct answer earns the question's full marks, a wrong answer deducts 0.25, and a question where you shade the fifth "not attended" OMR circle to formally declare a skip scores a flat 0 — no gain, no penalty. The only way to lose marks without attempting an answer is to leave a row completely blank without shading that fifth circle; an undeclared blank also costs 0.25, the same as a wrong answer, for zero chance of credit. Rule 6(2)(c) separately requires at least 35 percent of the 200 competitive marks — 70 marks — just to qualify; that floor is not a target. (Our pattern guide covers these rules in full if you need the underlying source citations.)

Work out what that 0.25 penalty actually means for a guess. On a four-option question with zero information, the expected value of attempting an answer is (1/4 × 1) + (3/4 × −0.25) = 0.25 − 0.1875 = +0.0625 — mildly positive, even with no elimination at all. Solving for the break-even accuracy where attempting stops being worth it gives p − 0.25(1 − p) = 0, or p = 20 percent. Because a genuinely blind four-option guess already clears that 20 percent bar, the arithmetic favors answering over declaring a skip unless you suspect a trap that makes your pick worse than a random one; skipping trades a little expected score for lower risk. The one unambiguous rule is the opposite of "guess freely": never leave a row undeclared. An undeclared blank has the same expected cost as a wrong answer (−0.25) with none of the upside, so it is strictly worse than shading the fifth circle, which costs nothing.

For mock-test purposes, score every attempt net of these rules rather than by raw correct-answer count, and be explicit about which unanswered rows were declared. A candidate who answers 90 of 100 questions — 60 right, 30 wrong — and shades the fifth circle on the remaining 10 scores 60 − (30 × 0.25) − (10 × 0) = 52.5, not 60. A candidate who answers only 70 questions with more care — 60 right, 10 wrong — and declares the other 30 as skipped in the fifth circle scores 60 − (10 × 0.25) − (30 × 0) = 57.5. These two outcomes are not a general argument for attempting fewer questions; they simply show how to compute a net score correctly once you separate wrong answers, declared skips, and undeclared blanks. Run that net calculation on every mock, every time, and log whether your gap between gross and net score is shrinking as your guessing discipline improves.

The verified 2026 exam-day timing (and an error on some other sites)

Some hall-ticket roundup pages have listed the 2026 VAO papers as 90-minute shifts (10:30 am–12:00 pm and 2:30 pm–4:00 pm). That is incorrect for this exam. KEA's own live candidate admit-card portal states it plainly for the RPC cadre: "Village Administrative Officer -2026 (RPC) - 2026 will be held on General Knowledge (PAPER -1) 04-OCT-2026 SUNDAY @ 10:30 AM TO 12:30 PM and Kannada, English and Computer Knowledge (PAPER-2) 04-OCT-2026 SUNDAY @ 02:30 PM TO 04:30 PM." Both papers are two full hours, matching KEA's 15 August 2026 exam calendar. The Kalyana-Karnataka cadre sits on 25 October 2026 at the same two time blocks.

Time your real-paper attempt at exactly two hours per 100-question paper — not 90 minutes. Practicing against a shorter window than the real exam gives either false confidence (if you later get the full two hours) or a distorted sense of your pacing (if you train for 100 questions in 90 minutes, you will likely rush the real paper and attempt riskier guesses than your accuracy supports).

A three-step plan built around the one real official practice set

You only have one genuinely official, free, full-length practice paper per section (the 2024 set), so treat it as a diagnostic instrument rather than something to redo cold — once you have seen the questions and your own answers, a second attempt will not measure your real accuracy. Build your plan around three steps instead of a long calendar:

  1. Timed diagnostic. Attempt the real 2024 Paper 1 under full two-hour, OMR-style conditions — print it, bubble your answers on paper, and shade a "skip" mark for anything you are not confident about. Repeat for Paper 2 in a separate two-hour sitting. Self-score both using KEA's actual final keys on the 2024 recruitment page, applying the net-scoring math above.
  2. Targeted review. Go through every wrong and declared-skip item, not just the ones you got wrong, and note which rule-based topic area it falls under. Use the Karnataka VAO study guide chapter for that topic and the VAO flashcards for short recall sessions to close the specific gaps your diagnostic exposed.
  3. Second timed attempt on fresh material. Since you cannot retake the same 2024 paper without remembering your own answers, use OpenExamPrep's free Karnataka VAO practice questions — a different, 135-question bank you have not seen — for your second timed sitting. Time yourself manually (the practice page has no built-in timer), and recompute your net score the same way to check whether your error rate and your fifth-circle discipline have both improved.

If your paper is the Residual Parent Cadre sitting on 4 October 2026 and you are only a day or two out, compress this into one timed diagnostic today, a focused review tonight, and a lighter run through our bank's "Missed" and "Unanswered" modes tomorrow rather than attempting a full second timed sitting. If your paper is the Kalyana-Karnataka sitting on 25 October 2026, you have roughly three weeks to run all three steps in full, spacing the review step across your two weakest sections before the final timed attempt in your last week. For a day-by-day calendar rather than this three-step cycle, see our syllabus and study-plan guide.

Where the free mock tests and real previous-pattern practice actually live

For the closest thing to an authentic, full-length, exam-pattern mock, use KEA's own real 2024 papers and keys linked above — nothing else matches their format and provenance. For topic-by-topic drilling between those timed attempts, independent Karnataka VAO practice by OpenExamPrep gives you 135 free questions split by section — 68 General Knowledge, 24 General English, 23 General Kannada, and 20 Computer Knowledge — with a written explanation for every option, not just the correct one. The practice page offers three modes — All, Unanswered, and Missed — rather than a topic filter or built-in timer, so work through a mode fully, track your own section-level accuracy as you go, and bring your own stopwatch if you want to time a session. When a GK or Kannada-grammar topic keeps tripping you up, the Karnataka VAO study guide breaks it down chapter by chapter, and the VAO cheat sheet is for final-day compression, not first-time learning.

If you specifically searched for a Kannada mock test, the authentic source is KEA's own 2024 papers linked above: the General Kannada part of Paper 2 and the Compulsory Kannada paper are set in Kannada. OpenExamPrep's free General Kannada questions mix English-language stems with Kannada-script stems and options (16 of 23 items use Kannada script, usually with a transliteration or gloss) — useful for topic drilling, but not a substitute for attempting KEA's real paper at least once.

The bottom line

Use KEA's own real 2024 papers and keys for your one authentic full-length simulation, drill the gaps they expose with a free, non-paywalled question bank, and score every attempt against the actual 0.25-penalty arithmetic rather than a raw correct-answer count — that combination will tell you far more about your real exam-day score than any recycled "model paper" download.
