EXIN EPI CDCP Recertification 2026: Renewal, Grace Period & BOT

The current CDCP renewal answer for 2026

An EXIN EPI Certified Data Centre Professional certificate is valid for three years. As of July 23, 2026, EPI gives a CDCP holder three different routes depending on certificate status:

• If the certificate is active and approaching expiry, EPI lists a US$259 CDCP Recertification Package containing the latest CDCP e-book and one exam.
• If it has expired, EPI says you can request a six-month grace period to complete recertification. Contact EPI before assuming the extension is automatic.
• If it has been expired for more than six months, ordinary recertification is no longer available. EPI directs the holder to its Back-On-Track (BOT) program, currently listed at US$499 for CDCP.

There is also a fourth decision: an active CDCP holder can upgrade to CDCS instead of renewing at the same level. That is an advanced-course route, not the US$259 CDCS recertification package. The latter is for someone who already holds CDCS.

These rules come from EPI's current Recertification Program, Training FAQ and Back-On-Track page. EPI develops the credential and publishes its renewal policy; EXIN is the independent accreditation and exam-delivery partner.

Use the current EPI pages, not an old PDF alone

A 2017 EXIN/EPI preparation guide still appears in search results and says recertification requires fresh accredited-provider training. That document is useful for the historical exam blueprint, but it no longer describes the complete current renewal process. EPI's live 2026 pages now explicitly offer a self-study bundle with an e-book and exam, plus a separate BOT route for long-expired certificates.

This distinction resolves an apparent contradiction. The current EXIN CDCP certification page still marks training as mandatory for initial certification. It does not say every current recertification candidate must repeat instructor-led initial training. EPI's credential-specific renewal pages control the operational renewal options.

If a provider sends different instructions, ask it to identify the current EPI rule, package and certificate-status window it is applying. Provider services and local prices can differ, but an old search-result snippet should not silently override EPI's current published program.

Start with the certificate-status decision table

The prices above are the amounts published by EPI in US dollars on July 23, 2026. EPI does not state on those tables whether taxes, exchange charges or local-provider services are included. Confirm the final checkout or invoice amount before seeking employer approval.

Route 1: renew an active CDCP for US$259

The standard CDCP recertification package is a self-study product. EPI lists:

• the latest CDCP e-book;
• one exam; and
• a fee of US$259.

EPI's FAQ says an exam-only purchase is not available for recertification because the package intentionally combines updated content with the assessment. This matters when comparing a cheap exam-voucher advertisement with the official renewal product. A voucher without the current e-book is not the package EPI describes.

For online ordering, EPI asks the buyer to enter the certificate ID in the purchase description. It says orders are processed within three working days and details are then sent by email. Offline ordering is available through EPI contact. The e-book is a secured file that can be opened on two devices; EPI says it can be printed when downloaded on a PC or Mac, but not from a mobile device.

Before paying, record:

1. the exact name on the certificate;
2. certificate number and expiry date;
3. current email address;
4. whether the certificate is still active;
5. the intended route: same-level renewal or CDCS upgrade; and
6. the published package name, contents and price on the purchase date.

EXIN provides a Certificate Authentication Tool that uses the certificate holder's last name, certificate number and module. It can produce a document of proof when the record authenticates. Use it if an employer or procurement team needs authenticity evidence, but use the actual certificate and EPI communication to establish the renewal deadline.

Route 2: use the six-month grace period correctly

EPI says a holder whose certificate has expired can request a six-month grace period to complete recertification. Its FAQ also recommends starting before expiry. Treat this as a recovery window, not a normal planning target.

The wording matters: it is a request, and the package page tells expired holders to message EPI. Do not buy a product first and assume the date will be accepted later. Send the certificate ID, expiry date and desired route to EPI, then preserve the response that confirms how your case will be handled.

Two different six-month periods appear in the EPI FAQ:

• a grace period after certificate expiry for recertification or, under stated conditions, upgrading to CDCS; and
• a general retake period of up to six months from the first exam date after an exam failure.

They are not described as interchangeable extensions. A retake window should not be assumed to extend certificate validity or the post-expiry grace deadline. If the dates overlap, ask EPI which deadline controls your case and schedule enough time for a retake before the earlier deadline.

Route 3: restore a CDCP expired more than six months

EPI's Training FAQ says a certificate expired for more than six months can no longer be recertified through the ordinary package. The Back-On-Track program is the recovery route.

For CDCP, the published BOT package contains:

• the CDCP e-book;
• one exam; and
• three months of CDCP Training On Demand access.

The listed price is US$499. EPI also lists BOT+ at US$399 when the package is purchased with an EPI course. Because BOT+ depends on another purchase, compare the combined invoice rather than treating US$399 as a stand-alone renewal price. Ask EPI or the authorised provider to show which course qualifies and which items appear on the invoice.

BOT is more expensive than renewing before or shortly after expiry: the published difference between US$499 and US$259 is US$240. The practical lesson is not merely to calendar the expiry date. Begin early enough to order, receive materials, review changed content, schedule the online exam and retain a buffer for a possible retake.

Renew CDCP or upgrade to CDCS?

EPI states that CDCP has two recertification choices: renew with the CDCP package or upgrade by attending CDCS through Training On Demand, instructor-led training or virtual instructor-led training. The right choice depends on the work you need to perform, not on which acronym looks more senior.

Renew CDCP when your current role still needs foundation-level understanding of facility availability, power, cooling, fire protection, security, cabling, monitoring and operations, and you do not yet need the advanced design calculations and vendor-evaluation work taught in CDCS.

Consider CDCS when you are responsible for reviewing design proposals, validating vendor offers, reasoning about redundancy across the design lifecycle or using engineering calculations. The EPI-USA CDCS page describes CDCS as the second design/build level and requires a valid CDCP certificate for registration.

EPI's current FAQ provides a narrow exception: during the six-month period after CDCP expiry, a holder may still upgrade without repeating CDCP, but must pass the CDCS exam within that window. If CDCP has been expired more than six months, EPI says the holder must restore active CDCP knowledge through BOT before proceeding normally to CDCS.

Do not confuse three prices:

• US$259 CDCP recertification: for an eligible CDCP holder renewing CDCP;
• US$259 CDCS recertification: for an existing CDCS holder maintaining CDCS, not a CDCP-to-CDCS upgrade; and
• CDCS course price: varies by delivery method, region and provider because upgrading requires the CDCS course.

Ask for a CDCS course quote before choosing upgrade solely to avoid a CDCP renewal fee. The higher-level route may be valuable, but it is not a US$259 shortcut.

Maintain only the highest certificate in the track

If you already earned CDCS, EPI says you do not separately recertify CDCP. Maintain CDCS, the highest certificate you hold in the CDCP/CDCS/CDCE design/build track. The same principle applies after earning CDCE: maintain CDCE rather than renewing lower levels one by one.

EPI also says CDCS recertification produces a new CDCS certificate only, not a new CDCP certificate. This can prevent duplicate budget requests and confusion when a lower-level certificate shows an older expiry date. Document the highest active credential and link HR or procurement to the current EPI FAQ.

How the recertification exam and retake process work

The recertification page says the included EPI exam can be scheduled and taken online from home or office and is delivered by EXIN. It does not publish a separate recertification-exam question count, time limit or pass mark on that page. Follow the appointment email and current package instructions instead of assuming every operational detail from the initial CDCP exam.

For context, the public initial CDCP profile currently shows 40 multiple-choice questions, 60 minutes, closed book and a 68% pass mark. Those facts are covered in the full EXIN CDCP exam guide. They should not replace a different instruction issued with a recertification voucher.

EPI's general retake FAQ says a failed candidate has up to six months from the first exam date to retake, must contact EPI to purchase a retake voucher, and may retake remotely. It does not publish the retake-voucher price on that FAQ. Confirm the amount, scheduling deadline and interaction with your certificate-expiry window before paying.

A practical 90-day renewal schedule

This is a planning buffer, not an official EPI deadline:

• 90 days before expiry: verify the certificate number and date, choose renewal or CDCS upgrade, and obtain employer approval.
• 75 days before expiry: confirm the live EPI price and package contents; request a CDCS quote if comparing routes.
• 60 days before expiry: order the eligible package and save the confirmation.
• 45 days before expiry: review the new e-book by subsystem and record changes from your original notes.
• 30 days before expiry: schedule the online exam, verify device, identity and remote-testing instructions, and reserve study time.
• 14 days before expiry: complete a closed-book readiness check and fix weak areas.
• After the exam: save the official result and renewed certificate, authenticate it if needed, and calendar the new expiry date.

If you are already inside a grace or BOT window, replace this schedule with the dates EPI gives you in writing. Do not compress a high-stakes expiry decision around an unofficial provider estimate.

Final renewal checklist

Before ordering, be able to answer five questions:

1. Is the CDCP active, less than six months expired or more than six months expired?
2. Do you need to maintain CDCP, upgrade to CDCS or maintain an already-higher CDCS/CDCE certificate?
3. Which current EPI package applies, and what exactly does it include?
4. What is the earliest relevant deadline for completion and any possible retake?
5. Do you have EPI confirmation for any grace-period, BOT+ or upgrade exception you are relying on?

The cost difference is meaningful, but the deadline is the real decision point. Verify status first, choose the right level second, and only then purchase the package that matches EPI's current rules.
