The 2026 Answer in One Minute

EASA Part-66 Module 1 Mathematics is not one identical exam for every licence category. Under the current Part-66 structure, Category A candidates sit 16 multiple-choice questions in 20 minutes, while the EASA table for B1, B2, B2L, and B3 uses 32 multiple-choice questions in 40 minutes. There are no Module 1 essay questions. The pass mark is 75%, so those totals translate to 12 correct answers for Category A and 24 for the 32-question B exam.

The official syllabus is also category-specific. Category A covers arithmetic, simple algebraic expressions, and graphical representation. The B-column syllabus adds equations, simple geometrical constructions, and trigonometry, and it generally expects a higher knowledge level. That difference should control your study plan. A Category A candidate who follows a B1 textbook from cover to cover may spend time on rows that are not applicable to Category A. A B candidate who studies only the Category A rows will leave large parts of the exam map uncovered.

Category A Versus the B Exam

Both versions allow an average of 75 seconds per question. Each official multiple-choice question has three alternatives, only one of which is correct. Penalty marking cannot be used to decide whether a candidate passes, so there is no scoring reason to leave an item blank.

A small 2026 source note matters here. Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) 2025/111 introduced the B1.E subcategory for aeroplanes with electric power plants, and the current consolidated modularisation matrix marks Module 1 as applicable to B1.E. EASA's September 2025 online Easy Access table predates that amendment and does not print B1.E beside the older B categories. If you are applying specifically for B1.E, use the current EUR-Lex text and your competent authority or approved Part-147 organisation's current booking instructions rather than assuming an older category list is complete.

The Current Official Module 1 Syllabus

The current legal table is concise. It identifies six syllabus rows and assigns a knowledge level or a dash for each category group. A dash means that row is not applicable to Category A.

The level number is not a difficulty score for an individual question. It describes the expected depth of knowledge. EASA defines Level 1 as familiarisation with the principal elements: you should know the basic elements, give a simple description, and use the usual terms. Level 2 requires general theoretical and practical knowledge plus the ability to apply it. Its objectives include understanding fundamentals, using relevant formulae, reading sketches or drawings, and applying knowledge through detailed procedures.

That explains an easy-to-miss feature of the Category A blueprint. Arithmetic and simple expressions are Level 1, but graphical representation is Level 2. Category A preparation should not treat graphs as a token final topic simply because the exam is shorter. For the B categories, arithmetic, simple expressions, graphs, and trigonometry are Level 2, while equations and simple geometrical constructions are Level 1.

Use the AMC Question Map, Not Guesswork

EASA's AMC1 to Appendix II publishes an acceptable allocation of questions by submodule. These are much more useful for planning than the broad labels alone. They are not guaranteed fixed counts in every live paper: the AMC expressly permits justified deviations, provided the total number of questions for the module remains correct. Treat the table as the best official planning map, not a promise about the exact order of your paper.

For Category A, the model split is 37.5% arithmetic, 31.25% simple expressions, and 31.25% graphical representation. That is a balanced three-part paper. Spending nearly all your time on arithmetic would neglect about five-eighths of the AMC model.

For the 32-question B version, equations receive 12 questions in the AMC allocation, or 37.5% of the paper. Arithmetic follows with six, simple expressions and graphs receive four each, and constructions and trigonometry receive three each. Equations therefore deserve the largest single practice block, but the other five rows still total 20 questions. A one-topic strategy is not enough.

Why Old Module 1 Pages Can Mislead You

Search results for Module 1 mix several generations of Part-66 material. Some pages still show B3 as 28 questions in 35 minutes. Some old EASA-hosted documents show 30 questions for B categories. Current Appendix II now gives B1, B2, B2L, and B3 the same 32-question, 40-minute Module 1 format. Always check the date and legal version behind a table before building a timed mock around it.

The content list is another trap. Older notes frequently present a long, detailed checklist containing topics such as binary or hexadecimal systems, logarithms, quadratic equations, or rectangular and polar coordinates. The current Module 1 legal table does not name those items; it uses the six broader rows shown above. That does not prove that every example in an older mathematics book is useless, but it does mean an old detailed list should not be presented as the current official Module 1 syllabus without a current mapping from your authority or Part-147 provider.

Use this source hierarchy when two documents disagree:

  1. Start with the current consolidated regulation on EUR-Lex.
  2. Use the latest EASA AMC and GM amendment for acceptable compliance detail.
  3. Use current instructions from the competent authority or approved Part-147 organisation running your examination.
  4. Use textbooks, videos, and question banks for learning and practice only after the first three establish scope.

This ordering keeps a well-produced but old training manual from silently overriding a newer legal table.

The June 2026 Transition Deadline Has Passed

Regulation (EU) 2023/989 included a transition rule for basic training courses, or parts of courses, that began before June 12, 2024. Those courses and their related examinations had to be finished before June 12, 2026, and the corresponding certificates of recognition also had to be issued before that date. EASA's guidance says training delivered after the transition period should follow the syllabus applicable after the new rule's applicability date.

As of this article's July 23, 2026 review date, that deadline is no longer an upcoming grace period. A page that tells candidates they still have until June 12, 2026 to finish is stale. If you have an incomplete legacy course, an old certificate, or uncertainty about examination credit, do not infer the outcome from a blog. Ask the licensing competent authority and your Part-147 organisation how your record is treated. The official Article 6 transition page is the controlling starting point.

Exam-Day Rules That Change How You Practise

The format rewards short, accurate manual work. The EASA examination standard gives a nominal average of 75 seconds for each three-option question. EASA's guidance for multiple-choice question generation also states that calculators are not allowed during the examination and says calculations should therefore be feasible without one; if a value would be impractical to calculate, the question should provide an approximation.

Build those conditions into practice:

  • Work without a calculator when you are training for timing.
  • Use three-option drills at least some of the time, even if a learning bank uses four options for harder revision.
  • Write only the essential steps needed to avoid sign, unit, or substitution errors.
  • Answer every item because penalty marking is not used.
  • Mark slow questions and return after completing faster items.

Fees, examination dates, identity requirements, booking windows, result delivery, and local administrative processes are not set as one universal Module 1 package on the EASA syllabus page. Confirm those operational details with the authority or approved organisation where you will actually sit. Avoid budgeting from an unsourced Europe-wide fee range.

A Category-Specific Four-Week Study Plan

This is a preparation recommendation derived from the official levels and AMC allocation, not an EASA-mandated course schedule. Extend it if your diagnostic shows weak foundations.

Week 1: Diagnose the Applicable Rows

First identify your licence category and copy only its applicable Module 1 rows into a tracker. Take a short mixed diagnostic without a calculator. Record each miss under arithmetic, simple expressions, equations, constructions, graphs, or trigonometry. Also label the cause: concept, setup, manual calculation, reading the graph, or time pressure.

Category A candidates should divide work among their three rows from the start. B candidates should include all six and give equations the largest single block. Do not calculate one overall percentage and stop; a decent total can hide a zero in a smaller row.

Week 2: Build Accuracy at the Required Level

For every applicable Level 1 row, practise recognition, terminology, and straightforward execution. For Level 2 rows, add application: move between a statement, formula, sketch, and answer choice. After each error, solve a fresh item using the same decision process. Rereading a worked answer is not enough evidence that you can reproduce it.

B candidates should run a dedicated equations block because the AMC model assigns 12 of 32 questions there. Category A candidates should use that time for graphs and arithmetic instead; equations are not applicable in the Category A table.

Week 3: Mix Topics Under a Clock

Start 8- or 16-question timed sets. Use 75 seconds per item as the planning pace. Category A candidates can simulate the complete 16-question, 20-minute paper. B candidates can use two 16-question blocks before moving to full 32-question sets.

Review time should be longer than test time. For each miss, explain why the selected option was tempting and what made the correct option defensible. The official distractor guidance expects plausible errors, including wrong-sense corrections and unit-conversion mistakes, so elimination should be based on the procedure rather than on which number looks nicest.

Week 4: Simulate, Repair, and Taper

Complete at least two full simulations for your category under no-calculator conditions. Require at least the legal 75% threshold, but set a higher personal readiness target so one bad cluster does not decide the result. Between simulations, repair only the weakest rows and recurring error types.

In the final two days, review a compact error log and the official row map. Do not add a large legacy topic merely because it appears in an old PDF. If your provider issued a current detailed learning-objective document, use that document to refine the broad official rows.

Retake Rules: Two Clocks, Not One

A failed Module 1 examination generally may not be retaken earlier than 90 days after the failed examination. The exception is a retake after 30 days when an approved Part-147 maintenance training organisation delivers retraining tailored to the failed subjects in that module.

Separately, the maximum number of attempts for each examination is three in a 12-month period. Before an examination, the applicant must provide a written statement identifying attempts during the preceding 12 months, including dates and the organisations or authorities involved. These are separate rules. It is incorrect to summarize them as “three consecutive tries, then a 90-day wait.” The 90-day rule follows a failed examination unless the tailored-retraining exception applies; the three-attempt rule limits attempts within the rolling period.

If you fail, record the date immediately, preserve the result notice, and ask the examining organisation to confirm the earliest permissible retake date before paying for another sitting.

Final Readiness Checklist

Before you book or sit Module 1, you should be able to answer yes to each question:

  • Have I confirmed whether I am preparing for Category A or a B-category Module 1 examination?
  • Does my topic tracker match the current official rows and knowledge levels for that category?
  • Have I used the AMC allocation as a planning guide without treating each submodule count as guaranteed?
  • Can I complete 16 questions in 20 minutes or 32 questions in 40 minutes without a calculator?
  • Am I consistently above 75% on full mixed simulations?
  • Have I checked the actual authority or Part-147 provider's booking and identity instructions?
  • If I am a legacy-course, credit, B1.E, or retake candidate, have I obtained a current answer from the responsible organisation?

The strongest Module 1 plan is not the longest mathematics checklist. It is the plan that starts with the current category-specific legal table, weights practice with the official AMC map, and rehearses the exact pace and constraints of the examination.
