11.1 Exam Logistics, Authorized References & 2026 Code Transition

Use official DSPS instructions for test-day preparation. Third-party summaries frequently preserve an old code edition, wrong fee, or an invented calculator rule.

Format and passing standard

The DSPS credential checklist lists the Journeyman Electrician exam as 100 questions in 4 hours. The DSPS exam page states that a score of 70% or higher is required to pass. DSPS does not publish a percentage-weighted domain blueprint, so do not plan around an unofficial claim that five subjects are exactly 20% each.

At 100 questions in 240 minutes, the average is 2.4 minutes per question. That is a pacing average, not a requirement to spend the same time on every item.

Authorized reference transition

DSPS currently assigns:

• Through September 30, 2026: 2017 NEC or 2017 NEC Handbook.
• Beginning October 1, 2026: 2023 NEC or 2023 NEC Handbook.

The state materials are SPS 305 and SPS 316. Because exam instructions can change, open the official Journeyman Electrician exam page again shortly before the appointment and match the books to the scheduled date.

Binding and note rules

The exam is open book, but the materials must meet the published restrictions:

• SPS 305, SPS 316, and printed notes may be placed in one three-ring binder.
• Candidates may bring no more than two additional printed bound reference books.
• Loose paper is prohibited.
• Removable tabs, sticky notes, and paper clips are prohibited.
• Tabs that came with a bound book and three-ring binder dividers are allowed.
• Practice examinations and previous examination questions are prohibited.

The rule permits printed notes in the binder; it is inaccurate to say that all notes are forbidden. Prepare the binder before test day, use a durable index, and avoid inserting prohibited question banks.

DSPS publishes the reference rule, not a blanket guarantee for every calculator model or personal item. Follow the appointment confirmation and testing-site security instructions for calculators, identification, lockers, arrival time, and prohibited electronics.

Application and scheduling

Apply through LicensE and wait for authorization. Then schedule an available session at a DSPS or Pearson VUE location. DSPS warns that after choosing Pearson VUE for that examination, the candidate cannot switch the session back to a DSPS site.

The current Pearson trade-exam fee schedule lists $95 for the Journeyman Electrician exam. DSPS-site fees are shown during LicensE scheduling. Do not rely on an old $50–$75 range.

The exam is in person; DSPS does not list a remote-testing option for this trade exam.

Accommodations

Request disability accommodations through the process and forms identified by DSPS, with enough time for review before scheduling. Do not wait until arrival at the test center. An approved accommodation changes the authorized testing arrangement; an informal request to a proctor does not.

Results and retakes

DSPS states that results are provided within 21 days. Follow the result notice and LicensE instructions for the next step. If unsuccessful, pay the required new examination fee and schedule another session; only one session may be scheduled at a time. DSPS does not publish a universal fixed waiting period on the current trades-exam page.

A candidate may request review of a failed examination within 3 months. The current trades-exam instructions list a $15 review fee and a one-hour review. A review cannot be scheduled within 7 days before a retake. Review rules protect exam security, so expect limitations on copying or recording questions.

Final pre-exam checklist

1. Confirm appointment date, location, and NEC edition.
2. Print current SPS 305 and SPS 316 and organize them in the allowed binder.
3. Remove loose sheets, sticky notes, removable tabs, clips, practice tests, and prior exam questions.
4. Verify accepted identification and testing-site arrival instructions.
5. Confirm the calculator and personal-item policy in the appointment notice.
6. Know how to reach both the DSPS application record and the testing vendor if a scheduling problem occurs.

Accurate logistics protect the study investment. Bringing the wrong NEC edition or prohibited loose notes can undermine otherwise strong technical preparation.

Appointment-day control

If the appointment confirmation conflicts with a generic study summary, resolve the conflict with DSPS or the selected testing provider before arrival. Keep the authorization, fee receipt, accommodation approval, and identity documents together. Allow time for check-in and book inspection; the four-hour testing clock and site security procedures are governed by the official appointment instructions, not by a prep course.
