There is no published fixed percentage pass mark. The standard is set using a criterion-referenced standard-setting method (such as Angoff), and candidates must pass both papers (A and B) at the same sitting to pass Part 1.

The June 2026 LDS Part 1 fee is approximately GBP 900; from October 2026 the fee rises to approximately GBP 1,025 under the College's revised pricing. Confirm the current fee on the RCS England website before applying.

Clinically applied human disease and medicine20%

General medicine and pathology relevant to dentistry: cardiovascular, respiratory, endocrine, haematological, hepatic and renal disease, medical emergencies, drug interactions and the dental management of medically compromised patients.

Oral biology, dental anatomy and embryology13%

Tooth morphology and numbering, development of the face and oral tissues, structure of enamel, dentine, pulp and periodontium, salivary gland function and the biology of dental hard and soft tissues.

Oral and maxillofacial pathology and oral medicine16%

Dental caries, periodontal disease, odontogenic cysts and tumours, potentially malignant disorders and oral cancer, ulceration, infections and the diagnosis of mucosal and bone lesions.

Microbiology and infection control8%

Oral microbiology, dental biofilm and plaque, caries and periodontal pathogens, cross-infection control, sterilisation and decontamination, and antimicrobial use in dentistry.

Pharmacology and therapeutics12%

Local anaesthetics, analgesics, antibiotics, antifungals and antivirals, sedation agents, drugs affecting haemostasis and bone, and prescribing for dental patients including the BNF/Dental Practitioners' Formulary.

Properties and clinical handling of amalgam, composite resin, glass-ionomer, dental ceramics, impression materials, gypsum, luting agents, alloys and the science of bonding and setting reactions.
