Why playback and projection are tested as aids, not as gadgets
Part 2 still asks for types of aids and their teaching functions. Audio tracks, podcasts, video clips, classroom speakers, a data projector and screen, an overhead projector (OHP) if it still appears as a named type, and CD or DVD players as traditional playback machines all belong in this cluster. The machine is not the mark. The job is the mark: provide a spoken model, give listening practice, supply visual context for listening, run silent viewing for prediction, pause-and-predict, focus on body language or lip-reading support, or bring a situation into the room that the class cannot visit.
OpenExamPrep independent study uses the same trainer labels you will meet in matching stems. A “recording of a conversation in a shop” is an audio aid with a listening-practice function. A “short clip of an airport check-in desk” is a video aid that can bring a situation into the room. A “transparency on the OHP revealed line by line” is a projection aid with a gradual-reveal function. Do not answer “use technology” when the stem has already named the function.
Board drawings and flashcards from the previous section can support listening (a picture that sets context), but they are not playback. Keep the clusters separate so you do not match a timeline to “learners hear a recorded model.”
Audio tracks, podcasts, and speakers
An audio track (coursebook CD track, downloaded file, or language-lab file) gives a spoken model with a voice that is not the teacher’s: another accent, another speed, another relationship (shop assistant and customer). That is a different aid from the teacher saying the dialogue live. A podcast extract can do the same job with more authentic delivery, provided the clip is short and tasked.
Classroom speakers (or a docking station, or a decent portable speaker) are part of the aid. If only the front row can hear, you do not have a class listening aid. Volume, file format, and a cable that actually fits the classroom computer are planning details, not afterthoughts at minute three.
Functions of audio:
- Spoken model for pronunciation, stress, or a functional dialogue
- Listening practice — gist, specific information, detail, inference — which is a skills aim, not a grammar gap-fill that happens to have sound
- Context for later speaking: learners hear a complaint, then make their own
Trap: audio that is too long. A twelve-minute ungraded podcast in a 45-minute B1 lesson will eat pre-teaching, the gist task, the detail task, and the post-stage. Cut to a 45–90 second extract, or choose a coursebook track written for the level. Length is a selection decision. Playing the whole file because “it’s authentic” is not using the aid for the aim.
Classroom scenario: Kenji’s B1 group is practising I'd like to make a complaint about…. He selects a 70-second coursebook dialogue at a shop, not a twenty-minute consumer-rights podcast. He writes two gist questions on the board first: Where are they? and Is the customer polite? Only then does he press play. After gist, he sets a detail task (tick the problem: late delivery / wrong size / rude staff) and plays the same short track again. The aid provided a spoken model and listening practice. The length made the two-pass plan possible.
Video clips: sound plus a moving picture
A video clip (file, streaming extract, or DVD chapter) adds a picture that audio cannot. Extra functions you must be able to name:
- Visual context for listening — learners see the shop, the queue, the gesture that shows irritation, so the soundtrack is easier to place
- Silent viewing for prediction — play with sound off; learners predict the relationship, the problem, or the next line, then listen to check
- Pause-and-predict — freeze before a key line (So what I want is…) and elicit the exponent, then play on as a spoken model
- Body language and lip-reading support — shrug, eye-roll, mouth shape of /θ/; useful when the aim includes paralinguistics or when weaker listeners need the face as a scaffold
- Bring a situation into the room — an airport, a hospital waiting area, a noisy street interview you cannot stage with classroom furniture
Trap: playing video as entertainment with no task. A five-minute comedy clip “to relax the class” is not a teaching aid in the TKT sense unless learners have a language or skills job (underline three polite requests; note how the speaker shows disagreement without words). Entertainment can be a warmer in real life; on the paper, an aid without a function is the wrong match.
Keep clips short. The same length discipline as audio applies, with extra temptation because video feels like a treat. A treat without a task is still a trap.
Classroom scenario: Marta has a 40-second clip of a passenger at a check-in desk. Aim: polite requests. She plays it silent first: What does the passenger want? How does the agent feel? Learners predict. She then plays with sound for gist, then pause-and-predict before the line Could I have an aisle seat, please? The clip brought an airport into a windowless room, gave visual context, and supplied a spoken model. She does not show the rest of the film.
Data projector, screen, OHP, CD and DVD players
A data projector and screen (or a large display) show whatever is on a computer: a still image, a document, a clip, a website used as an in-class visual. Function: display so the whole class shares one text or picture. Pair it with speakers if the file has sound. Without speakers, you have a silent picture, which may be useful (silent viewing) or a failure (you intended a listening model).
An overhead projector still appears in trainer lists as a type, even in rooms that retired the machine. Typical OHP functions: project a written model while you face the class; reveal a text gradually by covering lines with paper; overlay a grammar transparency on a picture. If a stem says the teacher wants learners to see a text one sentence at a time, gradual reveal on an OHP (or the same idea on a data projector with a mask) is the function. Do not invent a requirement that every 2026 classroom still owns an OHP. Do name it when the item names it.
CD players and DVD players are traditional playback types. Many centres now play files from a laptop, but matching items may still say “the CD track” or “the DVD clip.” Map those phrases to audio or video functions. The tray is not the pedagogy.

Planning the playback: task before play, gist before detail
Receptive-skills sequencing is a planning topic in its own right. For aids, remember the two habits that items compress into one stem.
- Set the task before you play. If learners do not know what to listen or watch for, they will listen for everything and remember nothing useful. Write the gist question, check that they understand it, then start the track. Playing first and inventing a question afterwards trains panic, not listening.
- Gist before detail. A first pass for global meaning, a second pass for specific information or language. Using a two-minute clip as a grammar dictation on first hearing is a misuse of a video aid that could have given context.
Pre-teach only blocking language. If you explain every word on the soundtrack, the recording is no longer a listening aid; it is a teacher lecture with background noise.
Backup if the machine fails — already a planning habit
Chapter 3 already treats planning for problems, including technology that does not start. Do not rebuild that chapter here. For this aid cluster, remember one sentence: if the CD player is empty, the file will not open, or the bulb has gone, the plan still needs a language job. Typical backups already belong in problem-planning: a paper transcript used as a reading-into-speaking task, a teacher-read version with the change of conditions noted, or a picture sequence that carries the same situation. The backup is not “cancel listening and do a gap-fill from another unit.”
Trap: no speakers, so “listening” becomes teacher-read without noting the change of conditions. A live teacher voice is slower or faster than the recording, has a familiar accent, can be paused by a look, and comes with the teacher’s mouth as lip-reading support. That can be a good backup. It is not the same aid as the track. On the plan, write that the condition changed. On a TKT item, do not choose “the class heard the original recorded model” if the stem says the teacher read the script because the speakers were missing.
Classroom scenario: Samira’s room has a projector but no speakers. She wanted a recorded shop dialogue. She reads the dialogue from the tapescript, slightly slower, and writes on the plan: Teacher-read model; not the CD voice. She still sets gist questions first. She does not tick “learners practised listening to an unseen recorded accent.” Honesty about conditions is part of selecting the aid.
Exam-style thinking
If the stem mentions predict the next line, look for pause-and-predict or silent viewing. If it mentions see how angry the speaker is without words, look for body language on video. If it mentions a voice that is not the teacher’s, look for audio or video with sound, not a live drill. If it mentions show the text one line at a time, look for OHP reveal or a projector mask. If it mentions the clip was fun, look for the missing task.

Using the playback diagram
The diagram is the aid-using habit, not a claim that every live paper uses six numbered stages. If you skip “set the task,” the first play is entertainment or panic. If you skip gist and go straight to a ten-item detail list, weaker listeners drown. If the clip is too long to play twice, you chose the wrong extract — that is a selection error, not a sequencing mystery.
Silent viewing slots in before the first soundtrack play when prediction is the function. Pause-and-predict slots during a second or third play when the function is to elicit an exponent and then hear it as a model.
The bars assume a short extract. If the audio is six minutes, the second play vanishes and so does the post-stage. That is why “too long” is an aid-selection trap, not a timing accident.
