Source control for RBT preparation

RBT candidates hear advice from supervisors, training companies, coworkers, social media, and older study materials. Some of that advice may be useful, but official source control means that the candidate checks the BACB source of record before treating any requirement as current. For this chapter, the core official sources are the RBT Handbook, the RBT Test Content Outline, BACB Examination Information, BACB guidance for meeting RBT requirements during the 2026 transition, and Pearson VUE BACB scheduling information. Those sources answer different questions.

The handbook explains credential requirements, fees, application steps, supervision, and maintenance. The test content outline explains what behavior technician tasks are eligible for exam coverage. Examination Information gives official exam statistics and exam-process details. Transition guidance explains what changed around 2026. Pearson VUE explains scheduling and testing-site delivery.

The reason source control matters is not academic. A candidate may complete a 40-hour training from an older provider, wait several months, then learn that the application now requires training aligned with 2026 requirements and an updated Initial Competency Assessment completed after the training. Another candidate may be approved before January 1, 2026, and still be inside a 12-month approval window with different transition handling. A third candidate may confuse a local practice-test score with the BACB passing process. These are planning problems, not intelligence problems.

The fix is to identify the decision being made and check the official source that controls that decision.

The RBT Test Content Outline, 3rd edition, is the current basis for the RBT exam beginning in 2026. It contains 43 tasks across six domains: Data Collection and Graphing, Behavior Assessment, Behavior Acquisition, Behavior Reduction, Documentation and Reporting, and Ethics. These domains are not just headings for test preparation. They mirror the RBT's supervised workplace responsibilities. The RBT collects data, supports assessment procedures, implements acquisition procedures, implements reduction procedures, documents and reports, and follows ethical requirements.

A candidate who studies the outline as a job map will usually make better sense of scenario questions than a candidate who studies it as a vocabulary list.

The 2026 transition guidance deserves special attention because timing changes the candidate's obligations. If application approval was granted before January 1, 2026, the approval lasts 12 months. During that approval period, the candidate may take the RBT exam up to eight times and does not need to meet the new requirements within that approval period. If application approval expired before January 1, 2026, the candidate must complete the new training and the most up-to-date Initial Competency Assessment before reapplying.

For applications on or after January 1, 2026, training must meet 2026 requirements and the updated Initial Competency Assessment must be completed after the 40-hour training.

For studying, official source control creates a stable order. First, read the TCO to see the tasks. Second, connect each task to supervised RBT actions. Third, use the handbook to understand requirements, fees, application, and supervision. Fourth, use examination information for exam format, result timing, and pass data. Fifth, use Pearson VUE when preparing to schedule. Do not let unofficial summaries replace this order. A summary can help you learn, but it should not become the authority for dates, fees, exam delivery, or eligibility.

A practical way to manage source control is to keep a candidate log. Record the date you checked the handbook, the date you completed training, the date the competency assessment was completed, the application submission date, approval date, exam appointment date, and any retake dates. Include the supervisor or coordinator contact. If something changes, the log helps the candidate and supervisor see which rule applies. For RBT work, the same habit later supports documentation and audit readiness: write down what happened, when it happened, who directed it, and where the official requirement came from.

Candidates should also be careful with old domain labels, old task lists, and older retake rumors. The current outline is the 3rd edition. The domain weights and tasks in this guide follow that outline. If a worksheet uses a different task count, an old domain title, or a format that does not match 85 total questions in 90 minutes, treat it as a possible learning aid only after checking it against current BACB sources. The goal is not to reject every outside resource. The goal is to prevent outdated details from steering application decisions or study priorities.
