Physical security systems do not become controls when the crate arrives. They become controls when devices sit at the specified height, cables carry the listing the plenum and the authority having jurisdiction (AHJ) will accept, terminals are torqued so they do not heat or chatter, and an inspector can still see the work before a ceiling tile hides it. For the Physical Security Professional (PSP) exam, Domain 3 Task 3 starts with installation and inspection techniques. Why installation quality is a security control

A reader mounted at 72 inches does not merely look odd. It misses wheelchair users, it invites tailgating while someone stretches, and it will fail an accessibility inspection the owner thought belonged only to the architect. A camera rotated fifteen degrees to dodge a soffit can lose the badge-plane identification the storage calculation assumed. A maglock armature that is not plumb with the magnet leaves a gap a card can start. Installation is where detection, delay, and assessment either exist in three dimensions or exist only on a PDF.

The exam trap is treating installation as a contractor means-and-methods footnote. PSP-level practice treats it as quality of the countermeasure. You are not asked to pull cable on test day. You are asked which defect is a hold-point failure, which jacket belongs in an environmental air space, who interprets the electrical code on this site, and why “that is how we always do it” is not a defense when the manufacturer’s sheet and the AHJ disagree.

Box heights, device heights, and orientation

Box height is not one number. Junction boxes, lock-power supplies, and controllers need working clearance and a location the electrician and the AHJ will accept under the adopted National Electrical Code (NEC) family—NFPA 70 plus the local amendments this jurisdiction actually enforces. Device boxes for readers, request-to-exit (REX) buttons, and intercoms sit on architectural elevations. Many commercial door typicals put the reader centerline near 42 inches above finished floor (AFF), but the final height still has to satisfy accessibility reach ranges and the hardware elevation on that opening. Cameras follow the coverage calculation from design: identification at the badge plane wants a different height than a parking overview. Exterior poles need manufacturer wind and aiming data, not “high enough that kids cannot grab it” as the only criterion. Lock-power cans that hang in a janitor closet without working clearance will fail an electrical inspection even if every badge still grants.

Device orientation is a detection parameter wearing an installation badge. Passive infrared (PIR) sensors have a stated look-down pattern; rotating the housing to “see more hallway” can create a dead zone at the leaf. Balanced magnetic switches need the magnet and reed in the published gap and orientation; a contact on the hinge side of a pair can miss the active leaf. Camera housings must keep the scene usable for identification and must not stare into sun or a wall-washer. REX motion sensors aimed at the corridor rather than the interior approach will shunt forced-open alarms for every passerby. Outdoor intrusion heads have a this-side-up, a beam geometry, and a mounting-height window on the cut sheet. If the sheet shows a pattern, that pattern is part of the installation, not artwork.

Worked clinic: a dual-technology sensor above a pharmacy anteroom is rotated to avoid a new sprinkler. The microwave still sees the corridor. Night nuisance alarms train the SOC to ignore that zone. The installation “worked.” The detection did not.

Plenum cable, pathway fill, and labeling

Environmental air plenums—the space above a suspended ceiling used as a return-air path, and similar spaces the mechanical code treats as plenums—are not a convenient cable tray. Plenum-rated communications cable, typically CMP listing in North American practice or a listed equivalent the AHJ accepts, is the usual requirement. CMR (riser) and CM (general) jackets that “we always pull on offices” are a substitution, not a field option. Mixing jackets so the last ten feet in the plenum are CMP while the closet is CMR can still fail if the run is treated as one cable type at inspection. Fiber and copper both have listing families. Read the ceiling type on the architectural drawing, confirm whether the space is a plenum, and pull the listed cable before the inspection, not after a red tag.

Pathway fill is electrical coordination wearing a security badge. Conduit fill is governed by the NEC family Chapter 9 tables and the notes that reduce allowable fill when you mix cable types or add pulls. A 3/4-inch homerun stuffed with lock power, reader, door-position switch (DPS), and REX because “it fit on Monday” can violate fill, destroy jackets on the next pull, and overheat. Cable tray and J-hook assemblies have manufacturer fill and support spacing. Overfill crushes UTP, makes Open Supervised Device Protocol (OSDP) intermittent, and leaves no capacity for the two doors the owner will add next year. Derating and separation from power conductors still apply when the security contractor “only does low voltage.” Box fill is the same family of rules: a device box packed with connectors and a reader pigtail is not exempt because the voltage is twelve.

Labeling is how the next technician, the site tester, and the security operations center (SOC) find the device the drawing named. Label both ends of every homerun with the identifier that matches the door and camera schedules. Label panels, ports, lock-power circuits, and above-ceiling junction boxes. Printer tape that says “CAM” on twenty heads is not a labeling program. When a forced-open hits Door 4, the operator should not need folklore to find the contact.

Torque, door hardware, and firestopping

Torque belongs on terminal strips, ground lugs, camera mounts, and lock fasteners. Manufacturer inch-pound values exist because under-torqued screws become intermittent alarms at 2 a.m. and over-torqued screws strip, crack housings, or deform maglock bonds. A calibrated driver is an installation tool. “Good and tight” is not a torque spec. On electrified hardware, torque also decides whether a mortise lock still latches after the strike is pulled in.

Door-hardware coordination is the classic installation collision. Openings specifications own the lock function, closer, hinges, and fire rating; electronic security owns the reader, DPS, REX, and controller output. In the field those worlds meet on one leaf. A fire-rated pair cannot receive a surface maglock and through-bolts that void the listing. Delayed-egress hardware has a listed sequence that a REX motion sensor can accidentally defeat. Electric strikes must match latch geometry; a 3/4-inch strike on a 1/2-inch latch is not close enough. Closers that slam bounce DPS into nuisance alarms. Open the hardware submittal, the door elevation, and the security typical before the first hole. After the frame is welded, every mismatch looks like an installer error even when it started as a specification split.

Firestopping restores the rating of the wall, floor, or smoke barrier you just penetrated. A listed through-penetration firestop system is a tested assembly of sleeve, packing, and sealant for a stated cable type and annular space—not a can of red foam because it was in the van. Security homeruns punch fire-rated corridors constantly. The AHJ will look. So will the fire-protection engineer. Leaving a two-inch open sleeve “for the next camera” is a life-safety defect, not a convenience. Do not disable maglock fire-alarm release “until we test later.” That later is an occupied building with an unreleased lock.

Manufacturer instructions versus shop folklore

The highest-frequency installation failure on exam stems is not exotic. It is “that is how we always do it.” Always-do-it is how Wiegand readers get mounted on unshielded cable next to a variable-frequency drive, how maglocks get powered from a reader’s auxiliary 12-volt, how cameras get aimed at asphalt because the soffit was easier, and how CMP gets “value-engineered” to CMR in a plenum. Manufacturer installation instructions, listing conditions of use, and the specification outrank folklore. If the sheet requires a dedicated earth, a maximum cable length, a listed power supply, or a specific mounting height, that is the installation. A superintendent’s preference is not a listing.

When folklore and the sheet conflict, stop and issue a request for information (RFI). Do not invent a hybrid. The inspector’s hold point exists so concealment does not launder the hybrid.

Hold points are scheduled inspections where work must stop until it is seen. Skipping one to keep the painter moving is how you accept a plenum violation you can no longer photograph.

Security installers coordinate with electrical work even when they never land a 120-volt circuit. Lock-power supplies, Power over Ethernet (PoE) switch feeds, generator-backed receptacles, grounding, and working clearances are electrical problems the NEC family and the electrical AHJ will inspect. Low voltage is not a holiday from code. Communications articles, listing of power-limited circuits, and separation from lighting inverters still apply. The AHJ is the official who interprets the adopted code on this site—often the electrical inspector, the fire marshal, or both. A campus standard that conflicts with the adopted code loses. Document the conflict; do not hide cable behind a tile and hope.

Installation happens in hospitals at 2 a.m., schools between bells, airports behind badging, and plants with lockout/tagout (LOTO) rules. Live-site safety is part of the technique. Energizing a maglock while a carpenter’s hand is in the strike is an incident. Hot work on a camera pole over a fuel canopy needs a permit. Infection-control barriers in a clinic are not optional plastic. Escorts exist because the installer is a visitor in a controlled space. Fall protection and confined-space rules for risers apply to security technicians. A schedule that assumes eight-hour weekday access to a pharmacy anteroom is not an installation plan; it is a claim waiting to happen.

The professional close of this section is simple: if you cannot inspect it, you cannot claim it was installed to the design. Hold the ceiling. Read the jacket. Torque the lug. Coordinate the door. Then, and only then, talk about commissioning.

Read the diagram as a freeze sequence, not as five names for one walk-through. Folklore that skips a hold point does not become compliant because the camera later shows a picture.
