Under Schematics, "signage and wayfinding strategies" is a design-intent topic. Informational hierarchy is separately named under Determine Design Intent. Placing the topic at both ends of the process is deliberate: wayfinding decided during schematic planning is nearly free, while wayfinding fixed after construction costs money and rarely works.


Wayfinding Is Architecture First

Wayfinding is the complete system by which people determine where they are, where they want to go, and how to get there. Kevin Lynch's urban framework — paths, edges, districts, nodes, and landmarks — transfers directly to interiors:

  • Paths — primary and secondary circulation, ideally continuous, daylit, and legible from the entry.
  • Edges — boundaries between zones, such as a change in ceiling height, flooring, or wall plane.
  • Districts — departments or neighborhoods given a distinct identity through color, material, or lighting.

Informational hierarchy is the deliberate ordering of message importance so a reader takes in the most important item first. It is expressed through:

  • Size and weight — the most important message is largest and boldest.
  • Position — top and left-aligned reads first in Latin-script environments.
  • Contrast — highest figure-to-ground contrast draws the eye first.
  • Grouping and whitespace — related items are clustered, unrelated items separated.
  • Consistency — the same message type appears at the same size and place at every decision point, so users learn the system.

The most common failure is a directory or directional sign that presents ten destinations at identical weight, forcing the reader to scan everything to find one item.


Accessible Signage Requirements

Signage accessibility is a health, safety, and welfare requirement.
