Tip Selection: Size, Style, and Fit

Sizing is sidewall-to-sidewall coverage, not “closest box number.” Hold candidate tips against the free edge (or a clean natural plate after prep) and choose the tip that:

  1. Spans the full free-edge width without gaps at the sidewalls.
  2. Does not pinch or force a narrow well onto a wider plate.
  3. Sits flush when dry-fitted—minimal rocking, no extreme overhang past sidewalls.

  • Hold firmly for the manufacturer’s set time; do not wiggle while curing.
  • Check alignment from above and from the side: straight centerline, even sidewalls, no trapped air pockets that later lift.

Flooding the cuticle with glue is a classic failure mode: excess adhesive migrates under the proximal fold, seals moisture, causes discomfort, and invites lifting and bacterial/fungal risk under the tip. Wipe excess before full set if safe, or carefully remove cured overflow without gouging tissue—prevention is better than rescue.

Do not file aggressively into the natural nail plate “to make the blend invisible.” Over-blending thins the plate, causes heat spikes with e-files, and leads to white spots, sensitivity, and long-term damage. The blend should be serviceable and smooth for product adhesion, not a polished-away natural nail.
