Can You Take the AE-C Exam?

Current, active, unrestricted US license or credential in one of the 13 NBRC-listed disciplines OR 1,000 hours of direct patient asthma education, counseling, or coordinating services
Additional Requirements
  • NBRC-listed credentials: physician (MD, DO), physician assistant (PA-C), nurse (RN, LPN, NP), respiratory therapist (RRT, CRT), pulmonary function technologist (RPFT, CPFT), pharmacist (RPh), social worker (CSW), health educator (CHES), physical therapist (PT), occupational therapist (OT), emergency medical technician (EMT, AEMT), paramedic, and speech-language pathologist (CCC-SLP)
  • Alternative pathway: 1,000 hours of direct patient asthma education, counseling, or coordinating services completed before applying; NBRC sets no degree requirement and no recency window for these hours
  • The 1,000-hour route requires a paper application with supervisor signature verification; the online application is only available to candidates applying with a listed license or credential
  • Application submitted through the NBRC Practitioner Portal; AARC members receive a $40 discount on first-time applications
  • Exam delivered at PSI assessment centers (more than 300 US locations, open Monday through Saturday); $150 additional fee applies to international testing
  • Schedule and attempt the exam within 90 calendar days of application confirmation or the application and fees are forfeited
  • Recertification every 5 years through the NBRC Credential Maintenance Program ($125 total, billed $25 per year)

Candidates may attempt the AE-C Examination twice without waiting; after two attempts a minimum of 180 days is required before each subsequent attempt. Reapplicants pay the reduced $250 fee.
