Current CAMT Program, Exam & Blueprint

A strong study plan begins with the current NAAEI documents, not a property’s old class binder or an internet summary. The official name is the Certificate for Apartment Maintenance Technicians (CAMT). NAAEI’s candidate handbook says a certificate holder may place CAMT after their name, but may not call the certificate or the holder “certified,” “accredited,” or “licensed” in connection with CAMT. That distinction matters because the credential validates a defined body of apartment-maintenance knowledge but does not replace a state trade license, EPA certification, pool-operator qualification, or employer authorization.

Current Candidate Path

The April 2025 handbook describes these core steps:

1. complete the required CAMT coursework through an approved provider;
2. document at least 12 months of relevant apartment-industry experience;
3. apply and receive an initial six-month candidacy term;
4. schedule and take the proctored exam through the approved delivery system; and
5. meet the current passing point and all program requirements.

A candidate who has completed the course and exam but lacks the experience may receive a provisional certificate and has the period stated in the handbook to document experience; the April 2025 version gives two years. Candidates should use their own eligibility notice for controlling dates.

The handbook describes 100 multiple-choice questions and 2 hours 30 minutes of testing time. The current passing point is 68 percent, subject to review by NAAEI. The exam may be offered through approved remote proctoring or a test site. The initial candidacy term is six months. NAAEI’s current candidate-resources page describes $75 six-month extensions, a maximum of four extensions, and an ultimate 30-month limit from candidacy start; a program sunset can impose an earlier deadline. The handbook lists a $55 retest fee and allows additional attempts while candidacy is active. Fees, extension terms, delivery vendors, and transition dates can change, so confirm them before payment. The CAMT certificate is described as lifetime and does not have a renewal requirement, although job competence still requires continuing education.

The Four-Domain Blueprint

The exam is not only a hands-on repair test. Its 100-question allocation is:

A candidate who studies only wiring, refrigeration, and plumbing leaves 65 percent of the blueprint underprepared. Conversely, soft-skills study cannot compensate for weak hazard recognition or trade diagnosis.

A Blueprint-Based Study Method

Build a 23-task checklist from the official blueprint. For each task, be able to answer four questions:

• What condition or request am I evaluating?
• What immediate hazard or compliance boundary controls the response?
• What procedure, measurement, record, or communication is required?
• When must I stop and involve a supervisor, licensed trade, contractor, or agency?

Use retrieval practice. After reading a section, close it and explain the decision sequence aloud. Work calculations without looking at the example. For each quiz miss, record whether the cause was a fact gap, a reading error, a calculation error, or an unsafe assumption. Revisit weak domains according to their blueprint weight.

Exam-Day Control

Before test day, verify identification, appointment time and time zone, system check or test-site route, permitted items, and rescheduling rules. During the exam, read the final question first, note words such as first, best, most likely, and except, and eliminate choices that bypass lockout, resident safety, manufacturer instructions, or scope limits. Mark uncertain items and return if the interface permits. A plausible repair that violates a safety or legal prerequisite is not the best answer.

NAAEI’s candidate-resources page announces a new CAMT program launching in 2027. A candidate testing during the transition should compare the current blueprint, handbook revision date, course version, and eligibility notice. This guide reflects the current public documents available on September 25, 2026; the official documents control if they change.

Requirements That Stay Separate

Exam eligibility, certificate status, and authority to perform field work are different questions. Passing CAMT does not by itself authorize refrigerant handling, pesticide application, asbestos work, electrical contracting, plumbing contracting, pool operation, or any other activity reserved by law or company policy. On an exam item, separate the knowledge question from the scope question: a candidate may know which measurement would diagnose a fault while still needing a licensed or specially certified person to perform the work.

Keep copies of course completion, experience verification, candidacy messages, appointment confirmation, score report, and certificate communication. Check that the name on registration matches identification and correct errors before test day. If an accommodation is needed, follow the testing provider's advance request process rather than asking the proctor to improvise on exam day.

After earning CAMT, continue learning. The certificate may not require periodic renewal, but codes, refrigerants, equipment, laws, and property procedures change. A lifetime certificate is not lifetime proof that every remembered rule remains current.\n\nTreat every logistics number as versioned information. Record the handbook revision you used, retain the confirmation issued for your own appointment, and resolve any conflict with NAAEI or the authorized testing provider before the scheduling deadline.
