1. Environment

Environment — surroundings in which an organization operates, including air, water, land, natural resources, flora, fauna, humans and their interrelationships. Surroundings can extend from within the organization to the local, regional, and global system.

Workplace framing: For a coastal chemical plant, "environment" is not only the fenceline. It includes on-site soil and stormwater pathways, the adjacent estuary, regional airshed, and — for greenhouse gases — the global climate system. Auditors asking "what is the environment for this EMS?" are testing whether the organization thinks beyond the factory floor.

Exam trap: Defining environment only as "nature outdoors" and excluding workers, neighbors, or indoor releases that interact with surroundings. Humans and interrelationships are part of the definition.


2. Environmental Condition

Environmental condition — state or characteristic of the environment as determined at a certain point in time.

Examples: dissolved oxygen in a receiving stream today; PM2.5 concentration downtown this hour; soil contaminant levels at a monitoring well; habitat quality score for a wetland adjacent to a pipeline right-of-way.

Why it matters: Organizations may need to determine environmental conditions that can be affected by the organization, or that can affect the organization (context and risks/opportunities thinking). A drought (condition) can raise the significance of water-withdrawal aspects. Poor baseline water quality (condition) can change how an effluent impact is evaluated.

3. Environmental Aspect

Environmental aspect — element of an organization's activities or products or services that interacts or can interact with the environment.

Aspects can be:

  • Direct — under operational control (for example, solvent emissions from on-site painting).
  • Related to activities, products, or services you can influence (for example, customer use-phase energy of a sold appliance, or contractor waste practices you can affect through procurement).

Strong workplace examples:

  • Electricity consumption of a data hall
  • Generation of hazardous waste from laboratory analysis
  • Noise from night-time truck movements
  • Spills potential from diesel tank filling
  • Packaging design that determines end-of-life recyclability

Auditors look for a systematic process to identify aspects — not a static list copied from a template with no link to real processes. Clause 6.1.2 expects consideration of a life-cycle perspective when identifying aspects (previewed more deeply in the next section).


4. Environmental Impact

Environmental impact — change to the environment, whether adverse or beneficial, wholly or partially resulting from an organization's environmental aspects.

Impacts are effects, not the interaction itself:

  • Aspect: stormwater runoff from paved yard → Impact: sediment loading and aquatic habitat degradation

Note the definition includes beneficial changes. Organizations sometimes only list negative impacts; that is incomplete for understanding performance and opportunities.

Severity, scale, duration, and probability often feed significance evaluation — but significance criteria are organizational choices documented in the EMS. The definition of impact itself does not require that every impact be "significant."


5. Environmental Performance

Environmental performance — performance related to the management of environmental aspects. In ISO management-system language, performance means measurable results. For an EMS, those results are evaluated against the organization's environmental policy, environmental objectives, or other criteria.
