The Datadog Fundamentals Certification is the vendor's entry-level credential for practitioners who install, configure, troubleshoot, and use the Datadog platform. Understanding the clock, question mix, and domain outline keeps your study time proportional to what appears on the real assessment.

The 15 unscored pretest questions are mixed into the session; you cannot distinguish them from scored items during the exam. That means you should treat every question seriously rather than guessing which ones "do not count." With 90 questions in 120 minutes, you have roughly 80 seconds per question on average—enough for careful reading if you already know the platform vocabulary.

The Six Official Domains

Datadog publishes six domains and a 29-topic subtopic list in the Fundamentals exam guide. Unlike some cloud exams, Datadog does not publish percentage weights for each domain. Based on topic counts, Computer Fundamentals and Data Collection are the broadest areas (~7 and ~6 topics respectively), followed by Infrastructure Development and Data Visualization & Utilization (~5 topics each). Retake and Scheduling Rules

Candidates may retake as needed, but Datadog limits you to three attempts within a 180-day window starting from your first attempt. After three failures, you wait 180 days before testing again. Between attempts, Datadog recommends waiting 24–48 hours before rescheduling—use that gap to map missed practice items back to outline topics. Each retake costs another $100; the original fee does not include free retakes.

For onsite testing, bring two forms of ID as Kryterion requires. For online proctoring, complete the system check early; webcam, microphone, and a clear workspace are non-negotiable.

How to Use This Chapter in Your Study Plan

Think of Chapter 1 as platform literacy—the vocabulary and operating-system habits that make Chapters 2–6 faster. You will not be asked to write shell scripts from scratch, but you will be expected to reason about:

Candidates who only read documentation struggle on scenario questions that assume you have restarted a service or read a config path.

Exam-Day Mindset

Because the passing score is undisclosed, aim for consistent strength across all six domains rather than gambling on unofficial cutoffs. Unscored items mean your real performance is measured across 75 questions—roughly 12–13 scored questions per domain if coverage were perfectly even (it will not be, but the math reminds you that weak spots hurt). Flag and return to long scenarios; do not let one networking puzzle consume five minutes.

Connecting to Practice

When you miss a practice question, label it with both a domain and a subtopic from the official PDF outline. For example, confusing API keys with application keys is Infrastructure Development; confusing tags with metrics is Computer Fundamentals or Data Collection depending on context. That labeling prevents vague "study more Agent" plans that never fix the underlying gap.

What Computer Fundamentals Does Not Mean

This domain is not deep data-center administration. Questions test the minimum OS, shell, and file concepts around the Agent: config paths, service behavior, tags versus metrics, and which log to open when YAML breaks. Do not over-study irrelevant sysadmin depth at the expense of Datadog-specific chapters.
