Exam Format and Seat Time

CPSM Exam 1 is a computer-based, multiple-choice exam. The operational form you will see contains:

You will not know which 15 items are unscored. Treat every question as if it counts. Pace yourself at roughly one minute per question, leaving a small reserve for flagged items. There is no separate essay or practical simulation—judgment is tested through scenario stems and best-answer choices.

Delivery: Pearson VUE and OnVUE

ISM delivers CPSM exams through Pearson VUE. The handbook lists three delivery options: a Pearson VUE test center, OnVUE online proctoring (subject to ISM/Pearson eligibility, system checks, and local availability), and on-site delivery at your own location when an employer has five or more candidates for the same exam. Practical logistics candidates often miss:

• Register with ISM before you try to book a Pearson appointment
• After you receive the ISM confirmation, the Candidate Handbook says to wait at least 24 hours before attempting to schedule; appointments are first-come, first-served
• Appointment cancellations/reschedules must reach Pearson VUE at least 24 hours before the scheduled local start time, or fees are forfeited; ISM also notes that a Pearson fee may apply to changes made within 48 hours of the appointment
• Bring required ID and follow the then-current security rules for center or OnVUE testing

Registration Sequence (ISM First)

The correct order is:

1. Create / sign into your ISM account and purchase the Supply Management Core exam registration on ISM's CPSM getting-started / certification checkout flows
2. Wait for your ISM confirmation, then wait at least 24 hours before attempting to schedule
3. Sign into Pearson VUE, select the ISM CPSM program, and book center or OnVUE (choose the "Home or Office" option for an online exam)
4. Complete the exam within your registration validity window

Per the Candidate Handbook, exam registrations are valid for six months from the date of purchase. If you need more time, ISM grants a 30-day extension when it is requested before the eligibility expires; the handbook prices that extension at $115 (member) / $195 (nonmember). Missing the window without an approved extension means forfeiting the exam fee.

Scoring Scale, Passing Standard, and Equating

ISM reports CPSM/APSM Core results on a scaled score from 100 to 600. The passing score is 400. Important clarifications for study and self-talk:

• The scale is 100–600, not 0–600. A raw "percent correct" is not what appears on your score report.
• 400 is the standard; it is not "400 out of 600 correct answers."
• Different exam forms vary slightly in difficulty. ISM uses equating (statistical linking of forms) so that a 400 on a harder form represents comparable competence to a 400 on an easier form.
• Because of equating and unscored items, chasing a personal raw-count target from a practice bank is only an approximation—use practice to find weak tasks, not to reverse-engineer an exact cut score.

You typically receive a pass/fail result and scaled score information through the ISM/Pearson reporting process after the exam. Do not expect an item-by-item public answer key; ISM's model protects the item bank.

Retakes and Score Validity

If you do not pass:

• ISM enforces a minimum 30-day wait before you may retake that same exam
• You must register and pay again through ISM—there is no retake discount called out in ISM's public FAQ language
• Use the 30 days deliberately: diagnose domain misses, rebuild weak tasks from Exam Specs 290, then re-enter timed sets

Validity rules to keep straight:

• CPSM exam scores (including Core when applied toward CPSM) remain valid for four years from the test date
• The APSM credential itself is valid for five years from the passing Core score date (no APSM recertification)
• You may take exams before you have finished CPSM experience requirements; scores can age in while you accumulate qualifying work, provided you finish within validity windows

Fees (Confirm at ISM Checkout)

ISM's certification-process pricing sheet lists $495 per exam for ISM members and $795 per exam for nonmembers. Three exams therefore cost $1,485 (member) / $2,385 (nonmember) in exam fees alone—before study materials, travel, or membership dues. ISM charges no CPSM application fee for members and $295 for nonmembers, and recertification (every three years, 60 continuing education hours) costs $135 member / $295 nonmember. APSM has no recertification fee because it cannot be recertified.

Treat those figures as currently published ISM prices, not a permanent price lock. Always confirm the live amount on the ISM certification checkout on the day you purchase. Membership is not required to test, but the member rate is a large swing; compare dues versus the nonmember delta if you plan multiple exams.

Additional cost notes from ISM's public CPSM FAQ context:

• Retakes require full fee payment again
• VA GI Bill reimbursement may apply to exam fees for eligible candidates (study materials and certain other fees are generally excluded—verify with VA rules)
• Extension fees (if you need the handbook's 30-day registration extension) are separate from the exam fee

Eligibility: APSM Path vs Full CPSM

Distinguish permission to sit Core from permission to claim CPSM:

APSM / Exam 1 sitting path

• Candidates pursuing APSM take the same Core exam
• ISM positions APSM for professionals newer to supply management; you can sit Core while building experience
• Passing Core is the exam gate for APSM (follow handbook application steps for award)

Full CPSM award requirements (in addition to passing all three exams)

• A regionally accredited bachelor's degree plus a minimum of three years full-time professional (nonclerical, nonsupport) supply management experience, or
• Five years of such experience without a degree

Pearson and ISM both restate that experience rule for CPSM program completion. You may still schedule and pass exams while working toward the experience threshold—exam scores remain usable within the four-year validity period once experience is documented.

Candidate Handbook (January 2026) — Your Rules Source of Truth

ISM's Certification Candidate Handbook, updated January 2026, is the controlling document for registration windows, APSM validity, score validity, identification, misconduct, and related policies. Exam Specs 290 remains the controlling document for task and scored-question weights. When a blog, forum post, or older PDF conflicts with the handbook or Specs 290, defer to the current ISM PDFs.

Recommended launch checklist before you spend serious study hours:

1. Download the Candidate Handbook (confirm the January 2026 or later cover date)
2. Download Exam Specifications 290 and highlight the Core task table
3. Decide APSM-now vs CPSM-track sequencing and calendar the 30-day retake, six-month registration, four-year score, and five-year APSM clocks
4. Register with ISM, then schedule Pearson VUE / OnVUE only after eligibility appears
5. Confirm current fees on ISM checkout (member vs nonmember)
