Understanding the Step from CCST to CCNA

CCST Networking and CCNA are related, but they are not the same credential. Cisco positions Cisco Certified Support Technician (CCST) Networking as an entry-level certification that validates foundational networking concepts and skills. It is designed for candidates who need to show how networks operate, including devices, media, addressing, protocols, diagnosis, and security basics. Cisco also describes CCST Networking as a first step toward CCNA certification.

The CCST Networking exam is the 100-150 CCST Networking exam. Cisco's official facts are important because career planning can be distorted by unsupported claims. The exam has no prerequisites and is available to anyone. The listed duration is 50 minutes. Cisco's current exam page lists a price of US$125 plus applicable tax. Cisco states that the number of questions varies, and Cisco does not publish a public exact passing score or pass rate for this exam. Candidates should avoid planning around unofficial claims such as a fixed question count, a specific public passing percentage, or public pass-rate estimates.

CCST is about readiness for supervised support work. The official topic areas are Standards and Concepts, Addressing and Subnet Formats, Endpoints and Media Types, Infrastructure, Diagnosing Problems, and Security. A CCST-ready candidate can identify a private IPv4 address, understand what a default gateway does, recognize a switch or access point, describe basic firewall filtering, run simple diagnostic commands, save a Wireshark capture, and document a support ticket. That is valuable, but it is still a foundation.

CCNA is the next larger step for many candidates. CCNA requires deeper operational knowledge and more hands-on confidence with network behavior. A CCNA candidate should expect to spend more time on routing and switching behavior, VLANs, IP addressing, wireless concepts, IP services, security fundamentals, device configuration, verification commands, troubleshooting, and modern network management concepts. CCNA preparation usually demands more lab repetition than CCST because candidates must move from recognizing concepts to applying and verifying them under more complex conditions.

A practical roadmap is to use CCST as proof of baseline vocabulary, support discipline, and job readiness, then use CCNA preparation to become stronger at implementation and analysis. After CCST, do not jump directly into advanced configuration without closing foundation gaps. Review weak areas from practice results, rebuild small networks repeatedly, document each lab, and begin reading configuration outputs with intent. Learn what normal output looks like before trying to diagnose abnormal output.

Certification validity also belongs in the roadmap. Cisco's current CCST certification information states that, starting July 15, 2025, CCST certifications are valid for 5 years. Candidates who earned CCST before July 15, 2025 keep lifetime validity under Cisco's current policy. CCST recertification is by passing any CCST, associate, professional, or expert Cisco certification exam; CCST does not qualify for Continuing Education recertification. Because certification rules can change, candidates should verify current Cisco policy when scheduling and when planning recertification.
