7.3 Vocabulary, Synonyms, Antonyms & Precise Word Choice

Key Takeaways

  • The official CBSA sample selects pistol and rifle as the closest same-kind pair among the listed choices.

  • Use context and part of speech to distinguish affect/effect, principal/principle and compliment/complement.

  • Check spelling directly; mnemonics are aids rather than universal rules.

  • Prior border-law terminology is not an OTEE writing requirement.

7.3 Vocabulary, Word Choice and Spelling

Core skill: Choose words by meaning and context. The CBSA writing-skills samples test everyday language relationships and sentence formation; prior knowledge of legal terminology is unnecessary.

Learn from the official sample

The CBSA publishes an item asking which pair among “pistol, rifle, bullets, gunpowder, scope” has the same meaning. It selects pistol and rifle. They are not interchangeable dictionary synonyms, but they are the closest pair in kind among the offered choices because both name complete firearms. The lesson is to compare the available options and the question’s wording rather than force a perfect relationship that is not present. Our practice examples extend that reading skill with clearer synonyms, antonyms and category comparisons; they are not claims about unpublished live items.

Word choice in context

A word can have more than one grammatical role. In “The change will affect the schedule,” affect is a verb meaning influence. In “The change had an effect,” effect is a noun meaning result. Read the entire sentence, including any article such as “an,” before choosing. “Principal” can mean main or an institutional head; “principle” is a rule or belief. “Compliment” is praise; “complement” completes or goes well with something. “Fewer” normally modifies countable people or objects; “less” normally modifies a mass amount or degree.

Some options look related because they share a workplace theme but do not share a meaning. For example, a document and a folder are related, but one is a record and the other is a container. Ask what each word actually denotes. For antonyms, check that the proposed opposite is on the same scale: expand/contract works as a size contrast, while expand/delay contrasts different ideas.

Spelling and sentence checks

Useful spelling-practice words include accommodation, questionnaire, separate, maintenance, occurrence, and supersede. A spelling question may present several plausible variants; inspect doubled consonants and vowel order. Avoid treating a mnemonic as a universal rule. For example, “receive” has e before i after c, but the familiar “i before e” saying has many exceptions. The correct spelling comes from the word itself.

When a question offers full sentences, check both meaning and grammar. A sentence may use the right homophone but still contain a tense or agreement error. Read every option; one polished-looking phrase may be wordy or ambiguous. Plain language favours the clearest accurate expression for the stated audience.

Practice method

  1. Identify the relationship or grammatical job requested by the stem.
  2. Eliminate choices with a different meaning, category or part of speech.
  3. Test the remaining words in the full sentence.
  4. Re-read the chosen answer for grammar and clarity.

No statutory distinction, tariff term or border enforcement power is needed to answer a writing-skills item unless the question itself supplies its meaning.
