Sistering

Sistering is the practice of attaching a new, sound piece of lumber directly alongside a damaged structural member, typically a joist, rafter, or stud, without removing the original member. The new sister piece is fastened tightly to the damaged one along its full length, or at minimum well past the damaged section on both ends, using construction adhesive, screws, bolts, or nails, so that the two pieces act as a single, combined structural unit. The sound new lumber restores the load-carrying capacity that the damaged original member has lost, while the original member, even in its weakened state, remains in place and continues to contribute some support.

Sistering is appropriate when:

  • Damage is localized rather than spread along the member's full length.
  • A majority of the member's cross-section remains sound, so the original piece can still share load once reinforced.
  • Access allows a new piece of lumber to be run alongside the original for its full span, or well past the damaged area, and properly fastened.
  • Removing the original member entirely is impractical, for example because it is entangled with plumbing, wiring, ductwork, or a finished ceiling below.

Sistering is a reinforcement method, not a substitute for correcting the moisture or infestation source. The sister board adds capacity, but if the conducive condition that caused the original damage is not corrected, decay or infestation can continue to spread into both the original member and the new sister.

Full Member Replacement

Replacement restores full original capacity but is more disruptive: it typically requires removing finish materials such as drywall, subfloor, or siding, and, critically, it requires the load the damaged member was carrying to be temporarily transferred elsewhere before the member is cut free.

Shoring and Temporary Support

Shoring, also called temporary support or cribbing, is not a permanent repair; it is the safety step that makes replacement possible. Shoring uses jacks, adjustable steel posts (screw jacks or jack posts), or built-up wood cribbing to temporarily carry the load that a structural member currently supports, so the damaged member can be safely cut out and a new one installed without the structure settling, cracking, or collapsing.

  • Temporary supports must rest on a stable bearing surface, such as a slab or footing, directly under the load path being transferred, not on unsupported soil or a weak floor.

  • Shoring must remain in place for the entire duration the original member is out of service. It should not be removed as soon as the new member is loosely set; fasteners, adhesive, and any required curing must be complete, and the new member confirmed to be fully bearing, before shoring is released.
  • Shoring is required any time a load-bearing member is fully removed, even briefly. It is not needed for sistering, since the original member is never removed from the load path.
