Why SAP-C02 exam facts matter

The AWS Certified Solutions Architect - Professional exam with series code SAP-C02 is a Professional-level credential. The scored items will not ask you to recite the registration fee. They will ask you to design multi-account networks, pick encryption and disaster-recovery patterns, and trade cost against resilience for a complex organization. Those design items only make sense if you first lock the official identity, logistics, and sunset dates so you study the exam you will actually sit.

Consider Northwind Payments, a card-processing company that already runs production workloads in three AWS Regions. Priya is the principal architect. Leadership wants a Professional-level credential on the architecture team before a payments-control review. If Priya studies Associate-level single-VPC patterns, she will under-prepare. If she waits for a future series without checking dates, she may miss the last SAP-C02 window. If she treats a third-party practice inventory as the official exam size, she will misread time management. This section teaches the facts AWS publishes so those mistakes stay off the calendar.

Official identity: SAP-C02

AWS names the current Professional architect exam AWS Certified Solutions Architect - Professional (SAP-C02). The exam is intended for people who perform a solutions architect role. The official exam guide states that it validates advanced technical skills and experience in designing optimized AWS solutions that are based on the AWS Well-Architected Framework. Later sections of this guide teach that Framework as AWS's published design lens. Do not confuse SAP-C02 with AWS Certified Solutions Architect - Associate, which is a different exam and a different difficulty. Do not treat SAP-C03 as the live series you are studying here: C03 registration opens later in 2026.

The official presented item count is 75 questions. Never substitute a practice bank's size for that number. AWS also does not publish exam-level pass-rate percentages; ignore forum figures such as an invented "about 55%."

Fee, local currency, and the 50 percent subsequent-exam benefit

AWS lists Professional and Specialty exams at $300 USD. The Before Testing policy page publishes a local-currency table for countries that price in euro, Australian dollar, Japanese yen, Korean won, Chinese yuan, and Indian rupee (INR is accepted on the Pearson Mindhub voucher store). As published on that table, Professional pricing includes €256, AUD $449, ¥40,000, ₩394,575, CNY ¥2,113, and ₹25,659. Applicable taxes may apply. AWS states that foreign-exchange prices are updated at least annually, and that rates may change more often with a minimum of 30 days' notice. Re-check the Before Testing page before you pay.

Active AWS Certification holders receive a 50% discount on a subsequent AWS Certification exam. The voucher lives in the AWS Certification Account benefits area. Priya already holds Solutions Architect - Associate, so her SAP-C02 attempt can use that benefit if the voucher is still valid. The discount does not make the exam free, and a failed attempt still consumes a paid registration: you pay the full fee, or the discounted price in force at purchase, each attempt.

Trap: assuming Associate is a mandatory prerequisite that unlocks a $0 Professional exam. AWS states that certifications may be earned without completing specific prerequisites. Recommended experience is not a fee waiver.

Where you sit: Pearson VUE and online proctoring

SAP-C02 is delivered through Pearson VUE. You schedule from your AWS Certification Account: sign in at aws.training/Certification, open the account, choose Schedule New Exam, then Schedule with Pearson VUE. You pick a test center or an online proctored appointment. Online proctoring is available for all AWS Certification exams through Pearson VUE. Communication with a proctor is required to complete an online appointment.

Cancel or reschedule more than 24 hours before the appointment to avoid forfeiting the fee. Each appointment can be rescheduled only twice; a third change requires canceling and buying a new slot. Inside 24 hours, the delivery provider charges the full fee except documented illness or emergency processes Pearson VUE publishes.

For Northwind, Priya might sit online before markets open, or travel to a VUE center if her home network cannot meet the online-proctor checklist. The exam content is the same either way. Logistics are not a scored domain, but a no-show still costs the Professional fee. Missing an appointment is not recorded as a failed exam; it is a forfeited sitting.

Languages and ESL +30

AWS currently offers SAP-C02 in English, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese (Brazil), Simplified Chinese, and Spanish (Latin America). Candidates who take a localized exam can often toggle questions to English during the sitting.

English as a second language (ESL) +30 adds 30 minutes for non-native English speakers taking the exam in English. Request it in the Certification Account under exam accommodations before you register. AWS states that ESL +30 needs to be requested only once and then applies to future English registrations with the test delivery providers. Separate disability accommodations go through Pearson VUE and must be approved before you schedule.

Northwind's Seoul architect sitting in Korean does not use ESL +30. Northwind's São Paulo architect sitting in English as a non-native speaker can request ESL +30 and then has 210 minutes instead of 180.

Validity, recertification, and what is not CE credits

The certification is valid for 3 years. AWS requires recertification so the credential tracks current knowledge. For AWS Certified Solutions Architect - Professional, the recertification page lists passing the latest version of this exam as the path that extends validity 3 years. AWS does not recertify this Professional credential through continuing-education (CE) credit hours the way some other industry programs do.

AWS currently also lists a Skill Builder maintenance option that extends Professional validity by 1 year for an active certification, using a paid Skill Builder subscription, with eligibility windows described on the recertification page. Treat that as a maintenance option AWS publishes, not as CE credits and not as a reason to skip knowing the 3-year exam recertification path.

Passing the Professional architect exam is also listed as a recertification option for AWS Certified Solutions Architect - Associate (3-year renewal). If Priya's Associate is still active, a passing SAP-C02 can renew that Associate credential as well. Confirm the current pairing on the recertification page before you rely on it.

Time extensions are added from the date you complete the recertification action. AWS's recertification FAQ example: if you renew by retaking the exam, three years are added from the date you completed that exam.

SAP-C02 versus SAP-C03: teach the one-day conflict

AWS is updating the Professional architect exam to SAP-C03.

Those last-day dates disagree by one calendar day. This guide does not invent a third date. Candidates must confirm the appointment rules in the AWS Certification Account and in the confirmation email before they lock travel. This OpenExamPrep guide teaches SAP-C02.

The September 2026 blog's choice framing is practical: take SAP-C02 by the last published C02 day if you are already prepared and want the credential now; the credential remains active through its original expiration. Wait for SAP-C03 if you specifically want the updated blueprint (the blog describes C03 domain reshaping around cloud-native design, generative AI, and related skills). C03's full exam guide is described as available when registration opens on 27 October 2026. Studying C03 task statements as if they were live SAP-C02 items is a mismatch.

New generally available features

AWS Certification FAQs state that a new product, service, or feature must be generally available for 3 months before it appears on a certification exam. That guideline applies to exams, not to training. Exam-guide revisions are published at least one month before they appear on the exam. Do not expect last week's launch announcement to be a scored SAP-C02 item the following Monday.

Scenario: Priya books the sitting

Priya holds an active Associate credential. She opens the Certification Account, applies the 50% subsequent-exam benefit to SAP-C02, and sees a $300 USD Professional list price reduced at purchase according to that voucher. She requests ESL +30 because she will sit in English. She chooses Pearson VUE online proctoring. She aims for a date before mid-November 2026, then reads both the product page and the September 2026 blog, notices the 16 versus 17 November conflict, and verifies the last bookable SAP-C02 slot in the scheduler rather than in a screenshot from a forum.

She ignores social-media pass-rate claims. AWS does not publish exam-level pass-rate percentages. She also ignores any site that says the exam has hundreds of questions, because that number is not the official 75.

Facts traps

1. Treating SAP-C02 and SAP-C03 as the same blueprint.
2. Using a practice inventory size as the official item count.
3. Inventing a pass-rate percentage AWS has not published.
4. Assuming a mandatory AWS classroom course or Associate exam is required before you may register.
5. Planning Professional recertification with CE hours that AWS does not use for this credential.
6. Booking a mid-November 2026 SAP-C02 slot from memory without confirming the scheduler after the one-day sunset conflict.
