What You're Actually Sitting Down To Take

The Autodesk Certified User (ACU) AutoCAD exam is a 50-minute, entry-level certification exam. It is not administered by Autodesk directly — it is delivered through Certiport, a business of Pearson VUE, at Certiport Authorized Testing Centers. That distinction matters for scheduling: you cannot walk into a generic Pearson VUE testing site and expect the ACU AutoCAD exam to be on the menu the way a Series 7 or a state contractor's exam might be. You book through a Certiport-affiliated center, often a school, community college, or workforce training site that has purchased Certiport testing licenses.

Exam Format at a Glance

This table is the one page you should mentally photograph before test day. Notice that the item count is a range, not a hard number — Certiport's own exam-length documentation (updated July 1, 2026) describes AutoCAD ACU as 30–35 items, and different candidates may see slightly different total counts depending on how many performance tasks versus linear items their specific form includes.

Two Very Different Question Experiences

Most certification exams you've taken are entirely linear: read a question, pick an answer, move to the next screen, no going back to change your mind about earlier answers in some cases. AutoCAD ACU blends that familiar format with something else entirely: Live-in-the-Application (LITA) tasks.

In a LITA item, the exam interface hands you control of a real, running instance of AutoCAD (or a faithful simulation of it) and asks you to do something — draw a line to a specific length, apply a hatch pattern to a closed region, move an object using grips, set up a layout viewport at a particular scale. The exam engine watches what you actually produce in the drawing and grades the result, not a multiple-choice guess about what the right answer would be. This is why hands-on practice inside AutoCAD matters more for this exam than for a pure knowledge-recall test: you cannot talk your way through a LITA item, you have to execute the command sequence correctly under time pressure.

The linear portion looks more like a traditional exam: a screenshot or scenario, four or more answer choices, single best answer, sometimes matching a list of terms to definitions (for example, matching AutoCAD system variables to what they control, or object snap modes to their icons).

Why "700" Doesn't Mean "70%"

Certiport reports your result as a scaled score of 700 on a 1–1000 scale, not a raw percentage of items answered correctly. Scaled scoring exists so that scores are comparable across different exam forms that may contain slightly different items of slightly different difficulty. Practically, this means:

• You cannot back-calculate "I need to get X out of 30 right" the way you could on a simple percentage-graded quiz, because harder items and easier items may not be weighted identically.
• A 700 is the pass threshold — think of it as the finish line on a scale that runs from 1 to 1000, not as "70% of questions correct."
• Do not obsess over gaming the scoring model. Focus your energy on genuinely mastering the five objective domains (covered in later chapters), because the scaled score is designed to reward broad competence, not narrow test-taking tricks.

Where the Exam Fits in the Autodesk Certification Ladder

ACU AutoCAD is the entry-level rung. Autodesk also offers the Autodesk Certified Professional (ACP) AutoCAD exam for candidates with deeper, production-level command of the software. If you are working through this study guide, you are almost certainly targeting ACU first — it validates foundational drafting competence, not professional-level production speed. Don't let ACP-focused study materials or forum posts confuse your prep; the domains, item count, and passing model described here are ACU-specific.

The Cost Question — And Why We Won't Guess

A lot of exam guides quietly print a dollar figure next to "cost" and move on. We won't do that here, because Certiport's own AutoCAD Certified User page does not post a single, universal list price. Pricing flows through testing centers and authorized voucher resellers, and it can vary by region, by school partnership, and by whether your voucher was purchased individually or as part of a classroom bundle. The honest answer is: ask your specific testing center or the institution issuing your voucher what your exam will cost. Treat any specific number you see quoted online as a snapshot from one reseller at one point in time, not an official, guaranteed price.

What This Means for Your Study Plan

Because roughly half the exam experience (the LITA tasks) rewards hands-on fluency rather than memorized facts, the most efficient use of your prep time is inside AutoCAD itself, not just reading about it. Treat every command you learn in this guide as something to physically type and execute in a real or trial copy of AutoCAD, not just something to recognize on a multiple-choice list.
