1.1 Current Exam Facts & Certification Requirements

Experience requirement vs. taking the test

To become ASE certified as a Service Consultant, you must:

Important distinctions for exam prep:

• You may be able to sit for the test before the experience clock is finished. Passing alone does not issue the certificate until experience requirements are met under current ASE policy.
• Repair-bay years as a technician do not substitute for the service-writing experience ASE requires for C1.
• Some training may substitute for part of the experience requirement under ASE policy—verify current rules on ase.com before you register or claim eligibility.

C1 vs. A1–A9: consultant vs. technician

On C1, product-knowledge items ask whether you can explain systems, maintenance, warranty, and identification accurately to customers and technicians—not whether you can perform the repair. Later chapters build only the depth a consultant needs for clear communication.

Fees, registration, and delivery

• Test fee: ASE prices C1 as a general test at $62. The $34 registration fee is charged per order, not per test, so buying several tests in one order still costs one registration fee. C1R recertification is also priced as a $62 general test.
• Registration windows (2026): Winter Jan 10 – Mar 31, Spring Apr 10 – Jun 30, Summer Jul 10 – Sep 30, Fall Oct 10 – Dec 31. After purchase you have 90 days to schedule and take the test.
• Fees and registration windows change—always confirm on ase.com before budgeting or scheduling.
• The C1 certification test is taken in person at a Prometric test center as a computer-based exam (CBT). ASE's online remote proctoring option is offered for recertification tests only, so it can apply to C1R—never to your first C1 attempt.

Recertification (C1R)

ASE certifications are valid for five years. Service Consultants must retest to retain certification. The C1R recertification test is shorter—ASE lists it at 25 questions / 30 minutes, with no separate research-question footnote (ASE documents the 10 unscored research items for its certification tests). You are eligible for C1R only after previously passing the corresponding initial C1 certification test.

Watch this trap: the ASE Renewal App (about $52/year) renews A-Series certifications only (A1–A9). It does not cover C1. Service Consultants renew by taking C1R, either at a Prometric center or through ASE's remote-proctored recertification option.

Criterion-referenced scoring (no published “magic %”)

ASE uses criterion-referenced scoring: the passing standard reflects the knowledge needed to do the job, set by ASE subject-matter judgment—not a curve against other candidates and not a fixed percentage ASE publishes for C1. Do not plan around “I need exactly X%.” Plan around mastering Communications first, then Product Knowledge, then Shop Operations.
