Why the Diagnostic Front End Is Tested
Two of the twelve General Diagnosis questions on the A8 test are written against tasks A.1 (verify the driver's complaint, perform visual inspection and/or road test) and A.2 (research applicable vehicle and service information). Verification by Road Test

- Record scan data during the event. Set a trigger on the suspect parameter (misfire counter, short-term fuel trim, fuel rail pressure) and capture a snapshot. Reviewing a recorded frame is far more reliable than watching a live list while driving.
- Note what does not happen. A misfire that produces no misfire counter increment and no MIL points toward a driveline or accessory concern, not a combustion event.
Visual inspection precedes electronic testing. Chafed harnesses at the exhaust manifold heat shield, rodent damage to injector wiring, disconnected vacuum lines after a prior repair, aftermarket alarm splices in the ignition circuit, and oil-soaked connectors are found with a light and a mirror, not a scan tool.
Researching Service Information
Once the complaint is verified, four categories of information are searched before testing begins.
