The antecubital fossa (the shallow depression located on the anterior surface of the arm distal to the elbow joint) is the primary anatomical area for routine venipuncture. It contains three major superficial veins, arranged in either an H-shaped pattern (present in approximately 70% of the population) or an M-shaped pattern.

1. Median Cubital Vein (First Choice)

Differentiating Veins, Arteries, and Nerves

  • Vein: Spongy, bouncy, elastic, non-pulsating structure that compresses under finger pressure.
  • Artery: Rigid, thick-walled, pulsating vessel. If an arterial pulse is palpated, do NOT insert a needle.
