Master soil fertility basics: N, P, K cycling; secondary and micronutrients; soil testing interpretation; fertilizer forms and placement; and the 4R framework (Right source, Right rate, Right time, Right place). This is the largest domain at 28% of the exam.
Soil and Water Management
Study soil physical properties (texture, structure, bulk density), water movement (infiltration, percolation, available water capacity), erosion control (RUSLE, residue), salinity and sodicity, and drainage/irrigation. Roughly 24% of the exam.
Integrated Pest Management
Learn weed, insect, and disease identification; scouting and economic thresholds; cultural, biological, and chemical control; and herbicide/insecticide/fungicide modes of action (HRAC, IRAC, FRAC groups) for resistance management. About 22% of the exam.
Crop Management & Practice Exams
Cover crop growth stages (corn V/R, soybean V/R, wheat Feekes/Zadoks), tillage systems, rotations, cover crops, variety selection, and precision ag. Then take timed 150-question mock exams until consistently scoring 75%+. Crop Management is 26% of the exam.
Can You Take the CCA Exam?
Check if you meet the basic eligibility requirements
- •BS in agronomy-related field + 2 years crop advising experience, OR
- •Associate degree + 3 years crop advising experience, OR
- •No degree + 4 years post-high-school crop advising experience
- •Must provide grower/client references documenting advising work
- •Must sign and adhere to the CCA Code of Ethics
- •Must pass BOTH the International exam and a Local Board (state/region) exam
