0.1 Overview of the AONL CENP Certification & Executive Competencies

Key Takeaways

  • The CENP is awarded by the AONL Credentialing Center; AONL is a subsidiary of the American Hospital Association, and PSI develops and delivers the exam through the AHA Certification Center.

  • Eligibility requires an unrestricted RN license plus either a master's or higher degree (at least one degree in nursing) with 4,160 executive hours, or a BSN with 8,320 executive hours.

  • The exam has 175 questions (150 scored, 25 pretest) in 3.5 hours, and candidates must answer 108 of the 150 scored items correctly.

  • The fee is $325 for AONL members and $450 for nonmembers; retakes require a 90-day wait and are limited to four attempts in two years.

  • Certification lasts three years and is renewed by re-examination or by 45 hours of professional development plus a $200 (member) or $275 (nonmember) fee.

0.1 Overview of the AONL CENP Certification & Executive Competencies

The Certified in Executive Nursing Practice (CENP®) credential recognizes registered nurses who practice at the executive level: chief nursing officers (CNOs), vice presidents of patient care, system nurse executives and other senior leaders who set the direction for nursing practice across an organization. This opening section explains who awards the credential, who is eligible, how the examination is built and scored, and how the official content outline maps to the rest of this guide. Every fact below is drawn from the AONL CENP handbook (revised 05/2025), the AONL CENP web page and FAQ, and AONL's published annual statistics.

Who Awards the CENP

The American Organization for Nursing Leadership (AONL) began in 1967 as a personal-membership group of nurse administrators within the American Hospital Association (AHA). It later operated as the American Organization of Nurse Executives (AONE) and adopted the AONL name in 2019. AONL remains a subsidiary of the AHA.

Certification is run by the AONL Credentialing Center (AONL-CC), whose Steering Committee governs both the CENP and the Certified Nurse Manager and Leader (CNML) programs. AONL-CC contracts with the AHA Certification Center (AHA-CC) for project management and quality assurance, and the AHA-CC engages PSI to develop, administer and score the examination. AONL reports that the CENP program meets the accreditation standards of both the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA) and the Accreditation Board for Specialty Nursing Certification (ABSNC).

The handbook's target practitioner definition is the lens for the whole exam: the nurse executive sets the vision for nursing practice in the delivery of safe, effective and efficient patient care; takes an interdisciplinary approach; leads through business skills, knowledge of the health care environment, communication and relationship management and professionalism; and advocates as the voice of the patient, family, profession and care team. The credential is described as specialty practice "at the highest levels of leadership practice," and its geographic scope is predominantly the United States and its territories.

Note

The executive distinction. When a CENP item describes a staffing shortfall on one unit, an answer that only adjusts that unit's schedule reflects manager-level thinking. The executive answer usually changes a structure: a float-pool model, a workforce pipeline, a governance decision or a resource allocation across the organization.

Eligibility in Detail

Every candidate must hold a valid and unrestricted RN license. Nurses educated and licensed outside the United States must have their education and licensure verified by CGFNS International; AONL-CC accepts no other verification service. Education and experience must then satisfy one of two options:

RouteEducation requirementExperience requirement
Option 1Master's degree or higher; at least one of the candidate's degrees must be in nursing from an accredited institutionAt least 4,160 hours in an executive or senior nursing role (about two years of full-time work at 2,080 hours per year)
Option 2Baccalaureate degree in nursing from an accredited institutionAt least 8,320 hours in an executive or senior nursing role (about four years of full-time work)

Two practical consequences follow. A nurse with a BSN and an MBA meets the Option 1 education requirement, because the master's degree may be in another field as long as one degree is in nursing. A nurse whose only degree is a BSN uses Option 2 and needs twice the experience. In both cases the work must be consistent with the CENP definition.

Each year 10% of applications are selected for a verification audit. Audited candidates prove licensure (through Nursys or the state board of nursing), education (an official transcript or diploma) and experience (an employer document verifying role-specific hours). A candidate who cannot substantiate eligibility is not permitted to test, and a credential already awarded may be revoked.

The Official Content Outline

The exam is based on the AONL Nurse Executive Competencies. The handbook's content outline assigns the 150 scored items to five domains and 20 subdomains, each described by numbered task statements.

Chapters 7–9 teach Domain 3 together with Domain 5's human-resource themes (leadership theory, decision making, strategy, change, innovation, inclusion, culture and healthy work environments). Chapters 10–11 teach Domain 4 (ethics, compliance, advocacy, equity and professional contribution). Chapters 12–14 teach the remainder of Domain 5 (finance, capital, contracting, staffing, employment practice and informatics).

Recertification and Professional Conduct

CENP certification is valid for three years and expires on the last day of the expiration month. To renew, the certificant must continue to hold a valid, unrestricted RN license and choose one route:

  1. Re-examination — pass the CENP exam no more than one year before expiration. No separate renewal application fee applies, although the usual exam fee does.
  2. Professional development — document 45 hours of eligible professional development related to the exam content over the three-year period and pay the recertification fee ($200 for AONL members, $275 for nonmembers). Eligible activities include attending or teaching academic courses, completing online courses, attending professional conferences and completing AONL-CC self-assessment examinations; some activities have caps.

Renewal applications may be submitted up to one year before expiration, and up to 30 days after expiration for an additional nonrefundable $50 fee. By applying, every candidate also accepts AONL-CC's Professional Standards of Conduct: maintaining competence, practicing safely and with good judgment, acting with honesty and integrity, avoiding discrimination and conflicts of interest, and following the laws and rules that govern the profession. Violations can lead to reprimand, suspension or revocation.

Test Your Knowledge

A nurse executive holds a BSN and an MBA and has worked 4,500 hours as a chief nursing officer. Which statement correctly describes this candidate's CENP eligibility?

A

Eligible under Option 1 only after documenting 30 hours of leadership continuing education from the last three years

B

Not yet eligible, because Option 1 requires the master's degree itself to be awarded in nursing

C

Eligible only under Option 2, because the MBA is not a nursing degree and 8,320 hours are therefore required

D

Eligible under Option 1: a master's or higher degree with at least one nursing degree, plus at least 4,160 executive hours

Test Your Knowledge

Which statement about CENP scoring is accurate?

A

Candidates must answer 108 of the 150 scored items correctly; the 25 pretest items do not affect the result

B

Candidates must answer 108 of all 175 items correctly, because pretest items are scored once a form is equated

C

Each of the five domains must be passed separately at 72% before an overall result is reported

D

Results are reported on a 200–800 scaled range, and a scaled score of 500 is required to pass

Test Your Knowledge

A candidate takes the CENP exam on March 3 and does not pass. Under the AONL-CC retake policy, what is the earliest retest date and the attempt limit?

A

No sooner than 30 days after March 3, with unlimited attempts as long as each exam fee is paid

B

Immediately, if the candidate calls PSI at least two business days before the new appointment

C

No sooner than six months after March 3, with a limit of two attempts in each calendar year

D

No sooner than 90 days after March 3, with no more than four attempts in a two-year period
