1.2 Eligibility Pathways & Registration

Baseline Requirements (All Candidates)

Before pathway paperwork, every CMAC applicant must meet three universal requirements published by AMCA:

1. Minimum age 17 at the time of application/exam per AMCA rules.
2. High school diploma or equivalent—or active pursuit of one. AMCA's published wording accepts candidates who are still working toward the diploma or GED, which is why CTE and high-school health-science students may test before they graduate.
3. Agreement to and ongoing adherence to the AMCA Code of Ethics.

These are not optional “nice-to-haves.” An incomplete age/education attestation or a Code of Ethics refusal will block eligibility even if your training or work history is strong. Three Eligibility Pathways

AMCA offers three mutually exclusive pathways. You need one complete pathway—not all three.

Pathway 1 — AMCA-Approved Test-Site Graduate

This is the most direct route for career-tech (CTE), proprietary school, and college programs that AMCA has designated as approved test sites. You must have graduated within the past year. Completing coursework without graduation status usually does not satisfy the pathway; the clock is measured from graduation, not from enrollment.

Pathway 1 candidates typically do not pay the $25 application fee required on Pathways 2 and 3. Many also sit the exam through processes coordinated by their school (including on-site online or paper administrations). Confirm with your program director whether they register you as a cohort or whether you still complete individual dashboard steps after graduation.

Pathway 2 — Non-Approved Program Graduate (Within 1 Year)

If your medical assisting or related program is not on AMCA's approved test-site list, you may still qualify as a non-approved program graduate—but only if your initial exam attempt falls within 1 year of your course-completion date. This path requires a $25 non-refundable application fee on top of the $139 exam fee, and testing is restricted to Live Remote Proctoring (LRP) only. Because LRP is mandatory here, budget the $40 LRP fee as part of your total cost ($139 + $25 + $40—confirm current checkout line items in the AMCA cart). Once eligibility is approved you have 60 days to register for an exam date.

Pathway 2 is common for graduates of solid local programs that simply never pursued AMCA site approval. Keep your diploma/transcript ready for upload; incomplete education proof is a frequent cause of delayed Eligibility Checkpoint clearance.

Pathway 3 — One Year Full-Time Related Work Experience

Candidates without a recent qualifying graduation can sit via work experience: a minimum of 1 year full-time employment in a related field, documented by an employer verification letter. Related roles typically include clinical or administrative medical assisting duties under a supervising provider or office manager—exact wording belongs to AMCA's current forms, so mirror their letter template rather than inventing your own language.

Pathway 3 also charges the $25 application fee and restricts testing to LRP only. Part-time work that does not meet AMCA's full-time standard, or letters that omit dates/job duties, can lead to denial. If your experience is mixed clinical/admin, ask the employer letter to list concrete tasks (vitals, EHR, scheduling, phlebotomy if performed) so reviewers can map duties to the medical assistant role.

Registration Workflow: Eligibility Checkpoint

Regardless of pathway, registration runs through the AMCA candidate dashboard and the Eligibility Checkpoint. Conceptually the sequence is:

1. Create/sign in to your AMCA account.
2. Select CMAC and open the Eligibility Checkpoint.
3. Declare your pathway and upload required evidence (graduation proof or employer letter).
4. Attest to age, education, and Code of Ethics.
5. Pay applicable application fee ($0 or $25) and exam fee ($139), plus LRP ($40) if required or elected.
6. Schedule once eligibility is approved.

Do not pay for a seat and assume eligibility will “sort itself out later.” The Checkpoint exists specifically to prevent candidates from discovering a documentation problem on test week. Upload clear PDFs, match legal names to your government ID for LRP or site check-in, and keep copies of every submission.

Cost Planning by Pathway

Retakes require re-registering and paying again, but AMCA discounts every retake 25%, so a second CMAC attempt runs about $104 rather than $139 (plus LRP where your pathway requires it). You get a maximum of three attempts, with a 30-day wait after the first failure and a 60-day wait after the second, and all three must fall within one year of your first attempt.

Practical Pitfalls

• Graduation window: Pathways 1 and 2 both enforce a 1-year window measured from course completion to your initial exam attempt—not merely to your application date. Graduating 13 months ago without work-experience eligibility can force you to wait until you qualify under Pathway 3.
• Pathway 3 runs the tightest clock: the work experience must immediately precede your application and you must be currently working in that field, and once eligibility is approved the initial attempt must happen within 60 days. Do not request approval until you are ready to study and sit.
• LRP environment: Pathways 2 and 3 are LRP-only. You need a quiet private room, reliable internet, a webcam, and a government ID that matches your registration name. Shared workspaces and dual monitors often fail proctor checks.
• Employer letters: Generic “good employee” notes without full-time dates and duty lists are weak. Use AMCA's required elements.
• Code of Ethics: Treat the Code as a living obligation after you certify; ethical violations can jeopardize certification status independently of exam scores.
