[!NOTE] Renewal Architecture: Alabama runs pharmacists and technicians on offset biennial cycles. What the rules state expressly is that pharmacy technician registrations expire December 31 of ODD-numbered years (r. 680-X-2-.14(9)) and that intern/extern permits do likewise (r. 680-X-2-.16(2)), while pharmacist licenses renew biennially (r. 680-X-2-.34) with the controlled substance registration for both pharmacies and pharmacists renewed in EVEN-numbered years (r. 680-X-3-.02(b)–(c)). Controlled substance registration fees are due October 1 of the renewal cycle and delinquent after the last day of December (r. 680-X-3-.03).

The Live CE Requirement Defined

To satisfy the mandatory six (6) live hours, the continuing education program must provide real-time, two-way interactive communication between the presenter and the audience. This includes:

• In-person professional seminars, clinical symposia, and state/national conventions.
• Live interactive webinars where participants can ask questions and receive real-time answers.

Recorded webinars, on-demand video modules, and journal articles are classified as home study and do not satisfy the live requirement, regardless of whether a post-test is required.

Approved Providers and Advance Approval

Under r. 680-X-2-.36(3), continuing education must be approved by the Board in advance, and any request for approval must reach the Board no less than thirty (30) calendar days before the program is offered. That advance-approval step does not apply to ACPE- or ACCME-approved courses that carry a program number. Pharmacists can monitor accumulated ACPE credits via the NABP CPE Monitor system.

[!NOTE] Rule 680-X-2-.36 contains no provision permitting or prohibiting the carryover of surplus hours into the next cycle, and none allowing hours to be banked. Plan to earn the full 30 hours (6 live) within each renewal cycle rather than relying on a carryover that the rule does not grant. The Board may, on written request and a showing of good and sufficient cause, grant a waiver or extension of time to complete CE (r. 680-X-2-.36(7)).

First Renewal & Statutory Proration Rules

Pharmacists initially licensed during a renewal cycle are subject to specific statutory proration rules based on the length of time they have held an active Alabama license prior to the December 31 even-year deadline:

1. Licensed Less Than 1 Full Year: If a pharmacist has been licensed in Alabama for less than one (1) full year prior to the December 31 renewal date (e.g., licensed in March 2026 facing the December 31, 2026 renewal), they are completely exempt from CE requirements for that first renewal (0 hours required).
2. Licensed Between 1 and 2 Full Years: If a pharmacist has been licensed for at least one (1) full year but less than two (2) full years prior to renewal (e.g., licensed in July 2025 facing the December 31, 2026 renewal), the pharmacist must complete fifteen (15) approved CE hours, of which at least three (3) hours must be LIVE.

4. Inactive License Status & Reinstatement Framework

Continuing Education Demonstration: The reinstatement CE arithmetic for a lapsed license is set precisely by r. 680-X-2-.36(8): a pharmacist who allows a license to lapse for at least one but not more than five calendar years must document fifteen (15) hours of continuing education for each lapsed calendar year. A two-year lapse therefore requires 30 hours; a four-year lapse requires 60.
4. Extended Lapse (> 5 Years): If a license has lapsed more than five (5) calendar years, then in addition to the examination requirement set out in Ala. Code § 34-23-52, the Board may require any amount of continuing education it deems appropriate.
