Canids: Dogs, Coyotes, and Wolves

Large wild carnivores — bears, cougars, and in some regions alligators — produce massive puncture and crushing trauma with claw-derived parallel linear abrasions in bears and felids.

Aquatic scavenging by crustaceans, fish, and turtles produces distinctive postmortem defects on submerged bodies, again concentrated on exposed and dependent surfaces, and is regularly mistaken for sharp force injury. Evidence and Coordination

Coordinate with animal control and veterinary services to impound and examine the animal, document its dentition, collect oral swabs for comparison to the victim's DNA, examine it for the victim's blood and tissue on the coat and claws, and evaluate the animal for rabies where exposure is possible. Where rabies exposure is suspected, the human exposure question is urgent for survivors and responders and is a public health notification.

Document the scene and the history: enclosure and fencing, tether, gate condition, feeding arrangements, prior bite history and any dangerous-dog designation, ownership, insurance status, witness accounts, and whether the animal had access to the decedent before discovery.
