1.2 Eligibility, Documentation, and Application

Key Takeaways

  • The handbook recommends accredited Neurodiagnostic Technology education and/or at least six months of practical plus theory nerve conduction studies training; that recommendation does not replace Pathway 1 or Pathway 2 documentation.
  • Every application needs Option A (an AAET Attestation Statement signed by the supervising physician that the technologist is not performing invasive needle examinations and that the physician interprets the data) or Option B (a copy of a superseding active board certification allowing EMG and interpretation per state or regional guidelines).
  • Pathway 1 requires one year of experience and either 100 patient encounters or 30 AAET CEUs; Pathway 2 requires NDT CAAHEP graduation and either 100 patient encounters or 30 AAET CEUs; every pathway also requires an American Heart Association Basic Life Support for Healthcare Provider card.
  • A patient encounter is an individual patient visit; no more than 12 encounters per day are accepted, and only encounters within three years of the application date count.
  • PTC may take up to 10 business days after payment to review; status is Approved, Reopened for More Documents, or Rejected; Scheduling Authorization comes from notices@ptcny.com within 11 weeks before the window and includes the PTC Candidate ID.

Why eligibility paperwork is exam content

A technologist who can run a clean median motor study can still be locked out of Prometric if the AAET Attestation Statement is missing, if patient logs count each nerve as a separate encounter, or if the name on a digital wallet ID does not match the Scheduling Authorization. This section is the application stack for the National Registry Examination for Nerve Conduction Studies. It is independent OpenExamPrep teaching, not an AAET or PTC form kit.

Recommended background versus required uploads

The handbook and AAET certification page recommend that a candidate has received education through an accredited Neurodiagnostic Technology (NDT) program and/or has at least six months of experience involving training in both practical applications and theory directly related to nerve conduction studies (NCS). That recommendation is coaching about readiness. It is not a substitute for Pathway 1's one-year experience rule or for Pathway 2's Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) graduation proof.

Think of the six-month recommendation as a floor for being ready to sit, and think of Pathway 1 or Pathway 2 as the documents PTC will actually review after you pay.

Required documentation: Option A or Option B, plus a pathway, plus BLS

AAET and the handbook require supporting documentation with the application. Build the packet as three layers:

  1. Option A or Option B (scope of practice)
  2. Pathway 1 or Pathway 2 (experience or NDT CAAHEP graduation, plus encounters or CEUs)
  3. American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) for the Healthcare Provider certification card (all pathways)

Option A or Option B

Option A is the AAET Attestation Statement signed by the supervising physician. The physician attests that the technologist is not performing invasive (needle) examinations and that the physician is responsible for interpreting the data. That sentence is about scope. The registry exam is a written NCS knowledge test. Needle EMG performance and interpretation stay with the physician unless a different legal pathway applies.

Option B is a copy of the certificate for the superseding active board certification which allows EMG and interpretation as stated by your state and regional guidelines. Option B is not a participation trophy for attending an EMG workshop. It is a current board credential that your jurisdiction treats as authorization to perform EMG and interpret.

Upload one of those two — Option A or Option B — not a homemade letter that ignores needle scope.

Pathway 1 or Pathway 2

Along with Option A or B, you still need a pathway:

PathwayBase requirementPlus one of these
Pathway 11 year of experienceProof of 100 patient encounters or 30 AAET CEUs
Pathway 2NDT CAAHEP graduateProof of 100 patient encounters or 30 AAET CEUs

Pathway 2 does not waive encounters or CEUs. A CAAHEP NDT diploma still needs either the 100-encounter log or 30 AAET continuing education units. Pathway 1 does not waive the year of experience just because you have 100 encounters. The year and the encounters-or-CEUs pair travel together.

PTC's sponsor page hosts the AAET Attestation Statement and the AAET Patient Encounter Form. Use those forms rather than a clinic spreadsheet that omits dates, supervising physicians, or referral types.

BLS for every pathway

Additional required documentation for all pathways is a copy of the certification card for Basic Life Support (BLS) for the Healthcare Provider under the American Heart Association. A generic workplace CPR card that is not AHA BLS for Healthcare Provider is the wrong artifact. An expired BLS card is the wrong artifact.

What counts as a patient encounter

The patient-encounter form defines a patient encounter as an individual patient visit. That means one patient on one date, not each nerve, not each limb, and not each stimulation site.

Two hard caps sit on the same form:

  • No more than 12 encounters per day
  • Only encounters within three (3) years of the application date will be accepted

Present cases in chronological order. If you tested 18 patients on a Saturday, you may log 12 of those visits for that date, not 18. If a visit is three years and one day older than the application date, it does not count. Inflating a log by counting a bilateral upper-extremity study as eight encounters is how applications get Reopened for More Documents or Rejected.

How to apply and what PTC does with the file

Go to https://apply.ptcny.com. Create an account, start a new application for the National Registry Examination for Nerve Conduction Studies, choose AAET and the testing window, and use your name exactly as it appears on your government-issued ID. Complete the questions, upload supporting documentation, agree to testing policies, and submit with the examination fee. Applications are not complete until information, documentation, and payment have been provided.

Review clock. PTC reviews the application after payment is received. Allow up to 10 business days.

Status email. After review, PTC sends one of three statuses:

  • Approved — you may proceed to scheduling
  • Reopened for More Documents — additional information is needed; follow the email
  • Rejected — you are not eligible; the email explains why

Fees are not refunded unless the applicant is rejected due to ineligibility. Ineligible candidates are refunded their fees minus an administrative fee. There is no refund for applying to the incorrect examination or testing window.

Scheduling Authorization and Prometric appointments

Approved candidates receive a Scheduling Authorization email from notices@ptcny.com within 11 weeks before the testing window starts. That email includes your PTC Candidate ID and instructions for making a Prometric appointment. If you do not receive it three weeks before the window opens, contact PTC — do not wait until the first day of the window to discover a spam-folder problem.

Appointment times are first-come, first-served. Candidates who wait until the last minute risk missing preferred dates, times, or centers. Candidates unable to schedule an appointment forfeit their fees. After you book, Prometric sends a confirmation; check name, exam, date, time, and location, and call Prometric at (800) 741-0934 if the confirmation is missing or wrong. International candidates may also schedule, reschedule, or cancel at www.prometric.com/AAET.

Identification: exact name match

You must present a current government-issued photo ID such as a driver's license, passport, or U.S. military ID. The handbook's pre-test checklist also lists a non-driver state ID. Expired, temporary, paper, or digital IDs are not accepted. The first and last name on the Scheduling Authorization must exactly match the first and last name on the photo ID. Fees are not refunded for exams missed because of invalid ID.

Realistic candidate scenarios

Scenario A — Option A vs Option B. Keisha performs surface NCS only. Her supervising physician signs Option A: she is not performing needle examinations, and the physician interprets. She does not hunt for an EMG board certificate she does not hold.

Scenario B — Pathway 2 still needs encounters or CEUs. Luis just graduated from a CAAHEP NDT program. He still uploads 100 patient encounters or 30 AAET CEUs plus AHA BLS. The diploma is Pathway 2's base, not the entire packet.

Scenario C — encounter inflation. A lab wants to log 15 Saturday patients as 15 encounters. The form caps 12 per day. They log 12 and keep the other three for a different date only if those were truly separate visits.

Scenario D — name change. Priya's Scheduling Authorization uses her passport surname; her driver's license still shows a prior surname. Prometric will not treat that as an exact first-and-last-name match. She updates the application name to the current government ID before test day, or she brings an ID that already matches the authorization.

Scenario E — Reopened for More Documents. Omar's BLS card expired during the 10-day review. PTC reopens the file. He uploads a current AHA BLS for Healthcare Provider card and waits for Approved. He does not drive to Prometric on a reopened application.

Traps

  • Treating the six-month training recommendation as if it replaced Pathway 1's one-year experience requirement
  • Uploading Option A and skipping the pathway encounters or CEUs
  • Counting each nerve as an encounter instead of each patient visit
  • Logging more than 12 encounters on one calendar day
  • Using encounters older than three years from the application date
  • Presenting a digital or paper temporary license as photo ID
  • Scheduling Prometric before the application status is Approved
