The South Africa Millwright Artisan Trade Test is the competency-based assessment for the millwright, one of the few designated trades that combines both mechanical and electrical work. It is moderated by the National Artisan Moderation Body (NAMB) under the Quality Council for Trades and Occupations (QCTO), and a successful candidate receives a Section 26D national artisan trade certificate. The trade test is practical and integrated, with oral and written knowledge questioning, so QCTO/NAMB do not publish a fixed multiple-choice question count. Trade-theory covers mechanical fitting, electrical principles to SANS 10142-1, drives, bearings and gearboxes, PLC and control basics, hydraulics and pneumatics, shaft alignment, fault-finding and OHS Act safety. This free prep includes 100 research-based practice questions with explanations and an AI tutor.

1A millwright is a dual-discipline artisan. Which combination best describes the core scope of the South African millwright trade?
A.Plumbing and bricklaying
B.Mechanical fitting and electrical work
C.Welding and boilermaking only
D.Painting and carpentry
Explanation: The millwright is one of the few South African designated trades that combines both mechanical and electrical competencies. A qualified millwright installs, aligns and maintains mechanical machinery and also wires, connects and fault-finds electrical control circuits and motors.
2The South African national trade certificate for a millwright is issued under which legislation once the candidate passes the external trade test?
A.Section 26D of the Skills Development Act
B.The National Credit Act
C.The Companies Act
D.The Consumer Protection Act
Explanation: The national artisan trade certificate is a Section 26D certificate issued by the QCTO after the candidate passes an external trade test moderated by the National Artisan Moderation Body (NAMB). Section 26D of the Skills Development Act governs trade test access and certification.
3A bearing is marked '6205'. In the deep-groove ball bearing designation system, what does the '05' indicate?
A.A 5 mm bore
B.A 25 mm bore
C.A 50 mm bore
D.A 5 mm outside diameter
Explanation: For metric rolling bearings with bore numbers 04 and above, the bore diameter equals the last two digits multiplied by 5. So 6205 has a bore of 05 x 5 = 25 mm. The '2' is the dimension series and '6' indicates a single-row deep-groove ball bearing.
4What is the synchronous speed of a 4-pole three-phase induction motor running on a 50 Hz supply?
A.1000 r/min
B.1500 r/min
C.3000 r/min
D.750 r/min
Explanation: Synchronous speed Ns = (120 x f) / P = (120 x 50) / 4 = 1500 r/min. South Africa uses a 50 Hz supply, so a 4-pole motor's rotating field turns at 1500 r/min and the rotor runs just below this due to slip.
5Which standard is the South African code for the wiring of premises (low-voltage installations) that a millwright must comply with?
A.BS 7671
B.SANS 10142-1
C.NFPA 70 (NEC)
D.IEC 60204
Explanation: SANS 10142-1, 'The wiring of premises – Part 1: Low-voltage installations', is the South African wiring code. Compliance is required under the Occupational Health and Safety Act (Act 85 of 1993). The current version is Edition 3 (2020).
6Ohm's law relates voltage, current and resistance. If a heater element draws 10 A from a 230 V supply, what is its resistance?
A.2300 ohm
B.23 ohm
C.0.043 ohm
D.230 ohm
Explanation: By Ohm's law, R = V / I = 230 / 10 = 23 ohm. This is a core electrical-principles calculation the millwright must perform for resistive loads on the 230 V single-phase supply.
7When aligning a motor to a pump using the rim-and-face method, what does the FACE reading primarily measure?
A.Angular misalignment
B.Parallel (offset) misalignment
C.Coupling backlash
D.Shaft runout only
Explanation: In the rim-and-face method the face reading (dial on the coupling face) detects angular misalignment, while the rim reading detects parallel (offset) misalignment. Correcting both brings the shaft centrelines into a single straight line.
8Before correcting any shaft misalignment, a millwright must first check and correct which condition?
A.Soft foot
B.Coupling colour
C.Belt tension
D.Oil grade
Explanation: Soft foot (one machine foot not sitting flat on the base, causing distortion when bolted down) must be corrected before alignment. Aligning with an uncorrected soft foot gives false readings and the alignment changes every time a foot bolt is loosened.
9In a hydraulic system, which component converts fluid pressure and flow into linear mechanical motion?
A.Hydraulic pump
B.Hydraulic cylinder (actuator)
C.Pressure-relief valve
D.Accumulator
Explanation: A hydraulic cylinder is the linear actuator: pressurised fluid acting on the piston area produces a force (F = p x A) and extends or retracts the rod, converting hydraulic energy into linear mechanical motion.
10A hydraulic cylinder has a piston area of 0.005 m2 and the system pressure is 10 MPa. What force can the cylinder exert?
A.500 N
B.5000 N
C.50 000 N
D.2000 N
Explanation: Force = pressure x area = 10 x 10^6 Pa x 0.005 m2 = 50 000 N (50 kN). This is the fundamental hydraulics relationship F = p x A that a millwright uses to size cylinders and check system capability.
