About the CSEE Exam

The Certificate of Secondary Education Examination (CSEE) is Tanzania's national O-Level school-leaving examination administered by the National Examinations Council of Tanzania (NECTA) for Form 4 students (approximately Grade 10). Candidates sit papers in 7–9 subjects across several weeks, spanning core subjects such as Basic Mathematics, English Language, Kiswahili, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Geography, History, and Civics, plus optional vocational and commercial subjects. Each subject is examined through paper-based tests combining short-answer and essay sections; science subjects also include practical papers. Results are graded A to F, and an overall Division (I–IV or 0) is calculated from the best 7 subjects using a points system. CSEE Study Tips from Top Performers

1Obtain the official NECTA syllabus for each subject and use it as your study checklist — only topics in the syllabus are examined.
2Practise with NECTA past papers (available on necta.go.tz) under timed conditions to build exam technique and identify weak areas.
3For Basic Mathematics, master all formula types and practise setting out working clearly, since marks are awarded for method as well as the final answer.
4For science subjects (Biology, Chemistry, Physics), prepare carefully for practical examinations — draw clear labelled diagrams and learn standard experimental procedures.
5Strengthen both Kiswahili and English writing skills, as composition questions require organised, grammatically correct essays in both languages.
6Aim for Division I or II by targeting consistent C grades or above in all your subjects, and focus extra revision time on subjects where you are closest to the grade boundary.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the CSEE and who administers it?

The Certificate of Secondary Education Examination (CSEE) is Tanzania's national O-Level examination taken by Form 4 students (approximately Grade 10), administered by the National Examinations Council of Tanzania (NECTA). It is the main qualification determining access to A-Level (Form 5–6) education.

How is the CSEE graded?

Each subject is graded A (75–100, 1 point), B (65–74, 2 points), C (45–64, 3 points), D (30–44, 4 points), or F (0–29, 5 points). A candidate's overall result is a Division (I, II, III, IV, or 0) calculated by summing the grade points from their best 7 subjects: Division I is 7–17 points, II is 18–21, III is 22–25, IV is 26–33, and 0 (fail) is 34–35.

How many subjects do CSEE candidates take?

Candidates typically sit 7–9 subjects. Compulsory subjects include Basic Mathematics, English Language, Kiswahili, and one science or social science. Additional subjects depend on the school's subject combination (science, arts, or business track). The Division is calculated from the best 7 subject results.

What grades do I need to proceed to A-Level?

Candidates need at least 3 credits (grade C or above) in recognised subjects to qualify for A-Level entry. Most Form 5 schools additionally require grades C or above in specific subjects relevant to the chosen A-Level combination (e.g., PCM combination requires passes in Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics).

When is the 2026 CSEE held?

The 2026 CSEE runs from 12 October to 30 November 2026 for school candidates. Registration for school candidates opens in January and closes in February (normal) or March (late registration with penalty fee). Practical examinations for some subjects begin in October.

What is the CSEE registration fee for 2026?

The NECTA registration fee for the CSEE is TZS 50,000 for normal registration (January–February) and TZS 65,000 for late registration (March). Fees are paid through NECTA-approved banks. Private (self-study) candidates may also sit the examination.
