About the CMPB Psychometric Exam
The CMPB Pre-Enlistment Psychometric Assessment (historically known as MAPAS) is a computerized adaptive test taken by all male Singaporean citizens and permanent residents during their pre-enlistment medical screening. It measures basic reasoning, numerical logic, spatial visualization, mechanical comprehension, and clerical speed. The scores are used by the Ministry of Defence (MINDEF) to allocate servicemen to suitable vocations and identify potential candidates for commander training at OCS or SCS.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the CMPB Psychometric test?
It is a compulsory computer-based aptitude assessment administered by the Central Manpower Base (CMPB) to Singaporean National Service (NS) pre-enlistees. The test evaluates cognitive abilities, mechanical understanding, and spatial skills to determine suitable vocational assignments and commander school eligibility.
Can you fail the CMPB Psychometric test?
No, there is no passing or failing grade. The test is used solely for vocational matching and leadership screening. However, performing poorly may restrict you from specialized or technical vocations and lead to exclusion from Officer Cadet School (OCS) shortlists.
How long does the assessment take?
The psychometric test itself typically takes about 1.5 to 2.5 hours to complete. It is conducted at the Vocational Assessment Centre (VAC) in CMPB on the same day as your physical medical screening, which takes around 5 hours in total.
Is there a fee for the psychometric test?
No, the test and the entire medical screening process are free of charge and fully sponsored by the Singapore Ministry of Defence (MINDEF).
Can I retake the CMPB Psychometric test?
No, the test is a one-time assessment taken during your pre-enlistment checkup. Retakes are not allowed except under exceptional circumstances approved by MINDEF (such as technical computer failure during the test).
How should I prepare for the assessment?
Since it is an aptitude test measuring innate cognitive skills, intensive study is not required. However, practicing spatial rotation, block counting, basic gear and lever physics, and numerical pattern questions is highly recommended to become familiar with the format.
