Nederlands HAVO Study Tips from Top Performers

1Study the Syllabus Nederlands havo 2026 begrippenlijst — CE uses terms like betoog, onderschikkende argumentatie and vals dilemma without glosses.
2Practise distinguishing uiteenzetting, beschouwing and betoog by schrijfdoel, not by topic alone.
3For drogredenen, classify whether the flaw is a misused argumentatieschema or a discussieregel violation.
4Train summaries that keep hoofduitspraak plus important undergeschikte uitspraken and stand alone without the source text.
5Build your SE leesdossier to at least eight originally Dutch literary works and rehearse literary terms in interpretation.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Nederlands havo?

It is the compulsory Dutch language and literature exam subject in Netherlands HAVO (hoger algemeen voortgezet onderwijs), with a centraal examen set under CvTE and a school exam, governed by the examenprogramma Nederlandse taal en literatuur and the Syllabus Nederlands havo.

What does the CE test?

The CE covers Domein A Leesvaardigheid and Domein D Argumentatieve vaardigheden for analysing and evaluating argumentation. Havo reading targets referentieniveau 3F on societal texts. Duration is about three hours.

How is the subject scored?

Results use the Dutch cijfer scale from 1 to 10. The subject eindcijfer typically combines schoolexamen and centraal examen scores. Diploma rules also set constraints such as a CE average of at least 5.5.

Is there a candidate exam fee?

Regular funded secondary-school candidates do not pay a separate CvTE sitting fee for the CE/SE. Schools may have material costs or voluntary contributions under local policy, but there is no published per-exam candidate tariff for this subject.

Are these official CE questions?

No. Official assessment is Dutch-medium reading and argumentation on the CE, plus school writing, oral work and literature. This bank is an original English-language MCQ study adaptation that keeps Dutch terms and short quotes when testing the skill; it does not replace CE writing/reading in Dutch.

How many literature works are required for HAVO?

The examenprogramma requires a minimum of eight literary works originally written in Dutch for havo. The additional ‘at least three works from before 1880’ rule applies to the vwo twelve-work minimum, not to havo’s eight.
