About the Nederlands HAVO Exam
Nederlands havo is the compulsory Dutch language and literature exam subject in Dutch higher general secondary education. The 2026 CE focuses on reading societal texts and analysing/evaluating argumentation at referentieniveau 3F; the school exam adds writing, speaking, and a literature dossier of at least eight originally Dutch literary works.
Exam sponsor: College voor Toetsen en Examens (CvTE). The requirements and fees below concern the certification or admission exam, separate from our free practice resources.
Assessment
Eindexamen = CE + SE. CE (Dutch, ~3 hours): Domein A Leesvaardigheid (analyse, beoordelen, samenvatten) and Domein D Argumentatieve vaardigheden (analyse & beoordelen of betogen; producing own betoog is SE). SE: Domein B oral, Domein C writing (gedocumenteerde uiteenzetting, beschouwing, betoog), Domein E literature (≥8 works originally in Dutch), plus optional overlap with CE domains per school PTA. Grades on the Dutch 1–10 cijfer scale; eindcijfer typically averages SE and CE.

How many literature works are required for HAVO?
The examenprogramma requires a minimum of eight literary works originally written in Dutch for havo. The additional ‘at least three works from before 1880’ rule applies to the vwo twelve-work minimum, not to havo’s eight.
