1Which of the following is the correct factorization of the algebraic expression x^2 - 49?
A.(x - 7)(x + 7)
B.(x - 7)^2
C.(x + 7)^2
D.(x - 49)(x + 1)
Explanation: The expression x^2 - 49 is a difference of two squares, following the algebraic identity a^2 - b^2 = (a - b)(a + b). Here, a = x and b = 7 (since 7^2 = 49), so the factored form is (x - 7)(x + 7).
2In a triangle, two of the interior angles measure 55° and 65°. What is the measure of the third angle?
A.50°
B.80°
C.70°
D.60°
Explanation: The sum of the interior angles of any triangle is always 180°. Adding the two given angles gives 55° + 65° = 120°. Subtracting from 180° yields 180° - 120° = 60°.
3What is the arithmetic mean (average) of the numbers 12, 16, 20, 24, and 28?
A.20
B.18
C.22
D.24
Explanation: The arithmetic mean is calculated by dividing the sum of all values by the total count of values. Here, the sum is 12 + 16 + 20 + 24 + 28 = 100, and there are 5 numbers. Dividing 100 by 5 gives 20.
4Solve the equation for x: 5x − 7 = 38.
A.6.2
B.31
C.9
D.45
Explanation: Add 7 to both sides: 5x = 38 + 7 = 45. Then divide both sides by 5: x = 45 ÷ 5 = 9. Check: 5(9) − 7 = 45 − 7 = 38.
5A rectangular classroom is 12 m long and 7 m wide. What is its perimeter?
A.19 m
B.84 m
C.76 m
D.38 m
Explanation: The perimeter of a rectangle is P = 2 × (length + width) = 2 × (12 + 7) = 2 × 19 = 38 m.
6A bag contains 3 red, 5 blue and 2 green balls of the same size. One ball is taken at random. What is the probability that it is green?
A.2/5
B.1/3
C.1/5
D.1/2
Explanation: There are 3 + 5 + 2 = 10 balls, and 2 of them are green. Probability = favourable outcomes ÷ total outcomes = 2/10 = 1/5.
7Factor the quadratic trinomial completely: x^2 - 7x + 12.
A.(x - 3)(x - 4)
B.(x + 3)(x + 4)
C.(x - 2)(x - 6)
D.(x - 1)(x - 12)
Explanation: To factor x^2 - 7x + 12 into (x + p)(x + q), we need two numbers that multiply to +12 and add up to -7. The factors -3 and -4 satisfy both conditions since (-3) * (-4) = 12 and (-3) + (-4) = -7. Thus, the factored form is (x - 3)(x - 4).
8A right-angled triangle has perpendicular legs of lengths 9 cm and 12 cm. What is the length of the hypotenuse?
A.14 cm
B.16 cm
C.15 cm
D.21 cm
Explanation: According to the Pythagorean theorem, c^2 = a^2 + b^2. Substituting the leg lengths gives c^2 = 9^2 + 12^2 = 81 + 144 = 225. Taking the positive square root yields c = sqrt(225) = 15 cm.
9If x + y = 14 and x - y = 4, what is the value of the product xy?
A.35
B.40
C.45
D.50
Explanation: Adding the two equations eliminates y: (x + y) + (x - y) = 14 + 4, giving 2x = 18, so x = 9. Substituting x = 9 into the first equation gives 9 + y = 14, so y = 5. The product xy is 9 * 5 = 45.
10In Euclidean geometry, what is the measure of an angle inscribed in a semicircle?
A.45°
B.60°
C.90°
D.180°
Explanation: According to Thales' theorem, an angle inscribed in a semicircle subtends the diameter of the circle. Because the central angle subtended by a diameter is 180°, the inscribed angle is half of the central angle: 180° / 2 = 90°, making it a right angle.
