1In classical French dramaturgy (théâtre classique), which rule requires that the plot consist of a single main action taking place in one location over no more than twenty-four hours?
A.The rule of decorum (la bienséance), forbidding violent acts on stage.
B.The rule of the three unities (la règle des trois unités: action, time, place).
C.The rule of verisimilitude (la vraisemblance), requiring events to seem credible to the audience.
D.The five-act convention (la division en cinq actes) of classical tragedy.
Explanation: Boileau gave the rule its classic formulation in L'Art poétique (1674): 'Qu'en un lieu, qu'en un jour, un seul fait accompli / Tienne jusqu'à la fin le théâtre rempli.' Derived by Renaissance and French theorists from Aristotle's Poetics, the three unities (action, time, place) concentrated the drama in the tragedies of Corneille and Racine.
2Which literary device is central to the structure of the phrase 'Un roi chantait la guerre, un pasteur la paix'?
A.Chiasmus, reversing the grammatical structure of corresponding phrases.
B.Parallelism with zeugma (or ellipsis of the verb 'chantait' in the second clause).
C.Oxymoron, conjoining two inherently contradictory terms.
D.Anadiplosis, repeating the final word of a clause at the beginning of the next.
Explanation: The sentence exhibits symmetrical parallelism in its subject-object pairing while omitting the repeated verb 'chantait' in the second coordinate clause (elliptic zeugma). This concise syntactic balance is characteristic of French neoclassical rhetorical style.
3In Voltaire's philosophical tale Candide, ou l'Optimisme (1759), what philosophical doctrine is satirized through the character of Pangloss?
A.Leibnizian optimism, specifically the claim that this world is the 'best of all possible worlds'.
B.Descartes' rationalist doctrine of innate ideas and metaphysical dualism.
C.Rousseau's romantic ideal of the noble savage uncorrupted by civilization.
D.Hobbes' political theory of natural egoism and the state of war of all against all.
Explanation: Voltaire created Pangloss as a parody of Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz's theodicy and Alexander Pope's optimism, satirizing the teleological assertion that 'all is for the best in the best of all possible worlds' in the face of earthquakes, wars, and human suffering.
4In Charles Baudelaire's Les Fleurs du Mal, what conceptual tension structures the opening section 'Spleen et Idéal'?
A.The political conflict between monarchist restoration and democratic republicanism.
B.The scientific opposition between Darwinian evolution and Catholic religious dogma.
C.The pastoral celebration of agrarian simplicity over the economic exploitation of urban factories.
D.The dialectic between the crushing weight of existential despair (Spleen) and the spiritual aspiration toward beauty and the infinite (Idéal).
Explanation: In 'Spleen et Idéal', Baudelaire articulates the modern poet's dual consciousness: torn between 'spleen' (ennui, melancholy, physical degradation, time's horror) and 'idéal' (elevation, artistic purity, mystical ecstasy, and transcendent beauty).
5In Goethe's drama Faust I, what is the precise condition under which Faust will forfeit his soul according to the wager (Wette) with Mephistopheles?
A.If Faust ever commits a mortal sin by taking human life.
B.If Faust ever says to the fleeting moment: 'Linger awhile, you are so fair!' (Verweile doch! Du bist so schön!).
C.If Faust fails to acquire universal scientific and occult knowledge within twenty-four years.
D.If Faust experiences genuine grief and repents of his pact before a Christian altar.
Explanation: Unlike traditional puppet plays where a fixed 24-year contract is signed, Goethe frames the pact as a wager: Faust wagers that Mephistopheles can never provide complete spiritual satisfaction. If Faust ever surrenders to passive contentment and bids the moment stay ('Werd ich zum Augenblicke sagen: / Verweile doch! du bist so schön!'), Mephistopheles wins.
6Which literary epoch in German literature is characterized by irrationalism, dramatic individualism, rebellion against feudal social constraints, and emotional intensity, exemplified by Schiller's Die Räuber?
A.Die Aufklärung (The Enlightenment, c. 1720–1785).
B.Die Weimarer Klassik (Weimar Classicism, c. 1786–1805).
C.Sturm und Drang (Storm and Stress, c. 1765–1785).
D.Der Biedermeier (Biedermeier, c. 1815–1848).
Explanation: Sturm und Drang was a proto-Romantic movement spearheaded by young writers such as Goethe, Schiller, and Lenz. It championed original genius (Originalgenie), intense emotion, individual freedom, and rebellion against rationalist conventions and tyrannical authorities.
7In Franz Kafka's novella Die Verwandlung (The Metamorphosis), what does Gregor Samsa's physical transformation into an 'ungeheures Ungeziefer' primarily signify in twentieth-century modernist analysis?
A.A religious allegory of redemption in which Gregor's suffering purifies his family.
B.A Naturalist case study showing how heredity and milieu determine a worker's degeneration.
C.An allegory of extreme economic alienation, psychological self-estrangement, and familial instrumentalization.
D.A fairy tale in which the family's love finally breaks the spell and restores Gregor's human form.
Explanation: Kafka's transformation of Gregor embodies modern alienation (Entfremdung). Reduced to a financial provider for his debt-ridden family, Gregor's monstrous form externalizes his inner dehumanization within the capitalist labor market and reveals the conditional nature of familial affection.
8In William Shakespeare's Macbeth, what dramatic function does the 'Tomorrow, and tomorrow, and tomorrow' soliloquy in Act V serve?
A.It is Macbeth's triumphant boast that, as the witches promised, no man born of woman can harm him.
B.It expresses Macbeth's profound existential nihilism and recognition of life's futility following Lady Macbeth's death.
C.It constitutes a formal prayer of repentance seeking spiritual redemption before battle.
D.It is Macbeth's guilt-ridden sleepwalking confession of Duncan's murder.
Explanation: Delivered after learning of Lady Macbeth's suicide, Macbeth's soliloquy depicts life as 'a walking shadow, a poor player / That struts and frets his hour upon the stage / And then is heard no more: it is a tale / Told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, / Signifying nothing.' It represents the nadir of his moral collapse and existential despair.
9Which metrical form defines the standard Shakespearean sonnet?
A.Fourteen lines of iambic pentameter arranged into three quatrains and a final rhyming couplet (abab cdcd efef gg).
B.Fourteen lines of dactylic hexameter divided into an octave and a sestet (abba abba cde cde).
C.Twelve lines of trochaic tetrameter organized into three equal stanzas without rhyme.
D.Sixteen lines of alexandrine verse alternating feminine and masculine rhyming couplets.
Explanation: The English or Shakespearean sonnet consists of fourteen lines in iambic pentameter (five iambic feet per line: unstressed/stressed). Its structure comprises three quatrains presenting arguments, variations, or metaphors, followed by a volta and a summarizing epigrammatic couplet (abab cdcd efef gg).
10In George Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-Four, what is the specific purpose of 'Newspeak' as articulated by Syme in the Ministry of Truth?
A.To provide poetic vocabulary for Party celebrations and state propaganda anthems.
B.To facilitate international trade by unifying grammar across Oceania, Eurasia, and Eastasia.
C.To accelerate computer processing of surveillance records in the Teleprogram division.
D.To narrow the range of thought so that thoughtcrime (crimethink) becomes literally impossible.
Explanation: As Syme explains to Winston Smith in chapter 5, Newspeak systematically eliminates nuance, synonyms, and antonyms to make subversive concepts unutterable: 'Don't you see that the whole aim of Newspeak is to narrow the range of thought? In the end we shall make thoughtcrime literally impossible, because there will be no words in which to express it.'

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between Bac Classique (ESC) and Bac Général (ESG) in Luxembourg?

Enseignement secondaire classique (ESC) is academically oriented towards university studies with strong emphasis on languages, philosophy, mathematics, and pure sciences. Enseignement secondaire général (ESG) provides applied, technical, and professional specializations, though both confer diplomas granting access to higher education.

How is the final grade calculated in the Luxembourg Bac Classique?

For each exam discipline, the final mark is composed of 1/3 continuous assessment (note de l'année) and 2/3 examination mark. Oral tests account for 25% of the examination mark in disciplines that include an oral component.

What is the passing score for the Luxembourg secondary school leaving exam?

Marks run from 0 to 60, and a final mark of 30 or more is sufficient. A candidate passes if all final marks are sufficient, or if one or two insufficient marks of at least 20 in non-core disciplines can be compensated: one when the general average is 36-37, two when it is 38 or more. Marks from 27 to 29 can lead to a supplementary test.

Is the official Luxembourg Bac Classique available in multiple-choice format?

No. Official papers are written dissertations, analyses and problems plus two oral tests, set mainly in French and German (English for English papers). This bank is an English-language MCQ study adaptation, not an official translation.
