Saint Lucia Driver's Theory Test: Suggested Study Strategy
Frequently Asked Questions
Which side of the road do motorists drive on in Saint Lucia?
Motorists in Saint Lucia drive on the LEFT side of the road. Paragraph 5 of the Driving Code makes it an offence for a driver to fail to keep the vehicle on the left of the road without sufficient cause, and paragraph 6 requires drivers to keep to the right offside when overtaking.
What are the speed limits in Saint Lucia?
Section 52 of the Motor Vehicles and Road Traffic Act gives the Minister, after consultation with the Road Transport Board, the power to prescribe the speed limits applicable on all roads, and limits may differ by road and by vehicle category. Saint Lucia posts its limits on signs in miles per hour, so you must obey the limit shown for the road you are on. The Division of Transport does not publish a single national schedule of default limits.
What are the requirements and fees for a Learner's Permit in Saint Lucia?
A Learner's Permit is issued by the Division of Transport to applicants aged 17 or over, and costs EC$75.00 for six months. Section 29 of the Act requires reports on the applicant's vision, hearing and physical fitness and successful completion of a prescribed defensive driving course. While driving, the permit holder must be accompanied by someone who has held a valid driver's licence for that category of vehicle for at least five years, must display the letter L on the vehicle in the prescribed manner, and must not carry passengers other than the instructor. The theory test itself costs EC$50.00.
How does right of way work on roundabouts in Saint Lucia?
Because traffic drives on the left, vehicles circulate clockwise around roundabouts in Saint Lucia. The established practice is that vehicles approaching a roundabout give way to traffic already circulating on it, which reaches them from the right.
What is the legal alcohol limit for drivers in Saint Lucia?
Section 75 of the Motor Vehicles and Road Traffic Act defines intoxication for driving purposes as a concentration exceeding 80 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood (0.08%), or 107 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of urine. Driving while intoxicated is a criminal offence, and the Act empowers police to demand an intoxication test.
What precautions should drivers take on Saint Lucia's mountain roads?
Saint Lucia's steep, mountainous topography means winding roads with hairpin bends. It is widely practised local courtesy to sound a short tap of the horn when approaching blind corners to alert oncoming motorists, to use a lower gear for engine braking on long descents, and to increase following distance during tropical rain.
