1A ship is steering a course of 085° by standard magnetic compass. The chart indicates a magnetic variation of 5° East, and the compass deviation table shows a deviation of 3° West for this heading. What is the true course steered by the vessel?
A.087° True
B.083° True
C.093° True
D.077° True
Explanation: To convert compass course to true course, apply the standard rule: True = Compass + Variation (East is +, West is -) + Deviation (East is +, West is -). Here, Magnetic Heading = 085° - 3° (West) = 082°, and True Heading = 082° + 5° (East) = 087° True.
2Which of the following is a fundamental characteristic of a standard Mercator projection nautical chart?
A.Rhumb lines appear as straight lines, while meridians and parallels intersect at right angles.
B.Great circles appear as straight lines, allowing direct plotting of shortest distances.
C.The scale of distance is constant and uniform across all latitudes on the chart.
D.Parallels of latitude converge toward the poles as curved lines.
Explanation: On a Mercator projection, meridians of longitude and parallels of latitude are straight lines intersecting at 90°, and a line of constant compass heading (a rhumb line or loxodrome) appears as a straight line. However, the latitude and distance scale expands toward the poles, so distance must be measured on the latitude scale at the same latitude as the track.
3Low water occurs at 06:00 with a height of 1.2 m, and high water occurs at 12:00 with a height of 4.8 m. Using the standard rule of twelfths for semi-diurnal tides, what is the estimated height of tide at 09:00 (3 hours after low water)?
A.3.0 m
B.2.4 m
C.3.6 m
D.1.8 m
Explanation: The tidal range is 4.8 m - 1.2 m = 3.6 m over a 6-hour duration. Under the rule of twelfths, the rise during each successive hour is 1/12 (0.3 m), 2/12 (0.6 m), 3/12 (0.9 m), 3/12, 2/12, and 1/12. In the first 3 hours, the total rise is (1 + 2 + 3)/12 = 6/12 = 1/2 of the range. Half of 3.6 m is 1.8 m, so the height at 09:00 is 1.2 m + 1.8 m = 3.0 m.
4When taking visual bearings of two charted terrestrial objects to fix the ship's position, what is the ideal angle of cut between the two position lines to minimize geometric error?
A.90°
B.30°
C.150°
D.180°
Explanation: An angle of cut of 90° between two position lines provides the highest geometric accuracy and the smallest ellipse of error. Angles less than 30° or greater than 150° produce broad, elongated intersection areas where slight bearing errors cause large position discrepancies.
5A vessel steers 180° True at a speed of 12 knots. An ocean current sets 090° True at a drift of 3 knots. What is the vessel's estimated course made good and speed made good over the ground?
A.166° True at 12.4 knots
B.194° True at 12.4 knots
C.166° True at 15.0 knots
D.180° True at 9.0 knots
Explanation: In one hour, the vessel runs 12 nautical miles South (180°) and the current displaces her 3 nautical miles East (090°). Using vector addition: Speed Made Good = sqrt(12^2 + 3^2) = sqrt(144 + 9) = sqrt(153) ≈ 12.37 knots. The angle east of south is arctan(3/12) = arctan(0.25) ≈ 14.04°. Therefore, Course Made Good = 180° - 14° = 166° True.
6During blind pilotage in coastal waters, how is parallel indexing effectively used on a marine radar display?
A.An electronic cursor or clearing line is aligned parallel to the planned track at the charted perpendicular distance from a conspicuous radar-conspicuous shoreline or target.
B.The ship's heading marker is aligned with a moving target to ensure relative motion matches the true motion vector.
C.The variable range marker (VRM) is locked to the nearest navigation buoy to monitor rate of turn in real time.
D.The electronic bearing line (EBL) is set to 000° relative to ensure the radar picture remains stabilized in head-up mode.
Explanation: Parallel indexing uses a line drawn on the radar display parallel to the planned track, set at a perpendicular distance equal to the planned distance off a fixed radar-conspicuous target. As long as the echo of the target remains on the parallel line, the vessel is on track; any deviation indicates cross-track error requiring immediate helm correction.
7Which radar maintenance check should be performed by the Officer of the Watch to verify the overall operational sensitivity and power output of the radar transceiver?
A.Checking the performance monitor (echo box or plume pattern) against the baseline calibration standard.
B.Switching from X-band (3 cm) to S-band (10 cm) to observe sea clutter attenuation.
C.Rotating the gain control knob to maximum until thermal receiver noise covers the outer edge of the display.
D.Adjusting the heading marker alignment screw until the bow crosshair matches the magnetic compass.
Explanation: The performance monitor generates a synthetic test pattern (plume or sunburst) on the display that measures both transmitted power and receiver sensitivity. A reduced plume length indicates deterioration of the magnetron, waveguide losses, or receiver preamplifier degradation.
8On an ARPA or radar display, what is the primary operational difference between observing target vectors in 'True Motion' versus 'Relative Motion'?
A.True vectors indicate the target's actual course and speed over the ground or through the water, whereas relative vectors immediately show whether a target will pass ahead, astern, or on a collision course.
B.Relative vectors display true geographical heading, whereas true vectors show only relative bearing changes.
C.True vectors eliminate the effects of target yawing, whereas relative vectors cause stationary targets to appear at zero knots.
D.Relative vectors require continuous GPS ground stabilization, whereas true vectors function on water-track log input only.
Explanation: True vectors display the target's true course and speed (showing its real aspect and heading), which is necessary for applying COLREGs. Relative vectors display the relative approach of the target toward your vessel; if a relative vector passes directly through your own ship center, risk of collision exists (CPA = 0).
9Under IMO ECDIS Performance Standards, which electronic navigational chart (ENC) display category contains chart information that cannot be removed from the screen under any operational mode?
A.Display Base
B.Standard Display
C.All Other Information
D.Custom Mariners Information
Explanation: Under IMO Resolution MSC.232(82), Appendix 2, 'Display Base' is the level of ENC information that must be permanently shown on the ECDIS display and cannot be removed. It consists of the coastline (high water), own ship's safety contour, isolated underwater dangers of depths less than the safety contour that lie within the safe water defined by that contour, other isolated dangers inside that safe water such as fixed structures and overhead wires, scale/range/north arrow, units of depth and height, and display mode. Buoys, beacons and ships' routeing systems sit one level up, in the Standard Display.
10When setting safety parameters on an ECDIS for a vessel with a maximum static draft of 8.5 m, estimated squat of 1.2 m, and required minimum under-keel clearance (UKC) of 1.5 m, what is the calculated Safety Depth?
A.11.2 m
B.9.7 m
C.8.5 m
D.10.0 m
Explanation: Safety Depth = maximum static draft + expected squat + required minimum under-keel clearance, less the height of tide where the passage plan credits tide. No tidal height is credited here, so Safety Depth = 8.5 m + 1.2 m + 1.5 m = 11.2 m. ECDIS then emphasises every spot sounding equal to or less than 11.2 m in bold black type.

About the Kazakhstan Maritime Deck Officer Exam

2Thoroughly practice stability and draft calculations by hand: understand how shifting cargo alters the center of gravity (KG), how free surface effect reduces effective GM, and how to correct an angle of loll safely.
3Review Caspian-specific operational conditions: familiarize yourself with shallow-water navigation, squat in restricted draft channels, and ice navigation precautions applicable to the Northern Caspian during winter.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who issues maritime deck officer certificates in Kazakhstan?

Professional diplomas (профессиональные дипломы) for deck officers are issued by the Republican State Institution 'Maritime Administration of Ports of the Republic of Kazakhstan' (РГУ «Морская администрация портов Республики Казахстан»), headquartered in Aktau and operating under the Committee of Railway and Water Transport of the Ministry of Transport. The diploma itself is issued in the state language and English, and is valid for 5 years.

What is the official format of the Kazakhstan deck officer examination?

Under Order No. 504 ('Rules for Certification of Seafarers' / Правила дипломирования моряков), there is no fixed-count written paper. Once the file is accepted, the candidate is summoned to an interview (собеседование) before the Seafarer Certification Commission (Комиссия по вопросам дипломирования моряков), whose composition is approved by the head of the Maritime Administration of Ports. The quorum is 5 members, and for an interview it must include at least one specialist holding a professional diploma not lower than the one applied for. On the results of the interview the commission decides whether the candidate meets the qualification requirements in paragraphs 25-74 of the Rules; the diploma is issued only after a positive decision, and a candidate may be re-interviewed an unlimited number of times.

What qualifications are required before appearing before the certification commission?

Candidates submit an application to the Maritime Administration of Ports with a copy of the seafarer's record book, an identity document, a medical certificate, and evidence of meeting the rank requirements in paragraphs 25-74 of the Rules: approved education in navigation, and approved seagoing service — for officer in charge of a navigational watch, 12 months of approved onboard training including at least 6 months of bridge watchkeeping, or 36 months of sea service with approved training. Since 1 January 2026 no state duty is payable for the diploma.

How does this OpenExamPrep practice bank help prepare for the qualification interview?

The official proceeding is an oral interview conducted in Kazakhstan, where the working languages of the certification process are Kazakh and Russian. This 100-question bank is an independent English-language multiple-choice study adaptation by OpenExamPrep — not an official translation, not an approved resource, and not a simulation of the commission interview, which cannot be reproduced in multiple-choice form. It is built on the STCW competence areas the Kazakh rules point to, so it helps you consolidate navigation, COLREGs, ship handling, stability and maritime law knowledge before you face the commission.
