About the KAZTEST Kazakh Language Proficiency Exam
The KAZTEST (ҚАЗТЕСТ) system is Kazakhstan's official state system for assessing and certifying proficiency in the Kazakh language. The National Testing Center publishes descriptors and a certification scale for five levels — A1 elementary, A2 basic, B1 intermediate, B2 upper-intermediate, and C1 advanced. KAZTEST runs in two forms: diagnostic testing, which determines a candidate's level from Listening and Reading only (2 blocks, 60 test items, 70 minutes), and certification testing, which confirms it across four blocks: Listening (20 items, 20 min), Reading (40 items, 50 min), Writing (2 open tasks, 50 min), and Speaking (2 open tasks, 7 min) — 127 minutes and a maximum of 160 points.
