1An intelligence analyst reviews four statements regarding a foreign state's suspected missile procurement network: 1. If Enterprise A procures specialized carbon fiber, Enterprise B provides maritime shipping. 2. Either Enterprise B provides maritime shipping or Enterprise C provides illicit financial settlement, but not both. 3. If Enterprise C provides illicit financial settlement, then State X imposes secondary financial sanctions. 4. State X did not impose secondary financial sanctions. Based strictly on these statements, which of the following conclusions must be logically valid?
A.Enterprise A did not procure specialized carbon fiber.
B.Enterprise B provided maritime shipping.
C.Enterprise C provided illicit financial settlement.
D.Enterprise A procured specialized carbon fiber and Enterprise B provided shipping.
Explanation: We can analyze the argument using deductive propositional logic. By statement (4), State X did not impose sanctions (~S). Statement (3) states C -> S; by modus tollens with ~S, we deduce ~C (Enterprise C did not provide illicit financial settlement). Statement (2) states an exclusive disjunction: B XOR C. Since ~C is true, B must be true: Enterprise B provided maritime shipping. Statement (1) is A -> B; knowing that B is true does not allow us to deduce whether A is true or false (affirming the consequent fallacy). Therefore, the only conclusion that must be true is that Enterprise B provided maritime shipping.
2Consider the following intelligence brief: 'All state-sponsored cyber espionage units that deploy custom rootkits maintain redundant command-and-control (C2) servers. Some units maintaining redundant C2 servers operate outside sovereign territory. No unit operating outside sovereign territory adheres to standard peacetime communications protocols.' Which of the following propositions is necessarily true?
A.Some state-sponsored cyber espionage units deploying custom rootkits operate outside sovereign territory.
B.No state-sponsored cyber espionage unit deploying custom rootkits adheres to standard peacetime communications protocols.
C.Some units maintaining redundant C2 servers do not adhere to standard peacetime communications protocols.
D.All units that do not adhere to standard peacetime communications protocols deploy custom rootkits.
Explanation: From the premises: 'Some units maintaining redundant C2 servers operate outside sovereign territory' (Some R are O) and 'No unit operating outside sovereign territory adheres to standard peacetime communications protocols' (No O are P). By categorical syllogism (Ferio / Datisi variant), since some R are O and no O are P, those members of R that are in O cannot be in P. Thus, 'Some units maintaining redundant C2 servers do not adhere to standard peacetime communications protocols' (Some R are not P) is logically necessary.
3Read the following passage regarding adversary disinformation operations: 'Recent telemetry demonstrates that automated disinformation campaigns achieve maximum velocity not when distributing entirely fabricated events, but when amplifying factual reports stripped of explanatory context. By isolating truthful data points from their systemic context, the adversary preserves surface credibility while inducing erroneous public inferences. Therefore, fact-checking initiatives that focus exclusively on verifying empirical veracity fail to mitigate the strategic cognitive impact of these campaigns.' Which of the following, if true, most strongly strengthens the author's argument?
A.Audiences presented with verified factual claims stripped of context draw substantially more distorted conclusions than audiences presented with outright fabrications that contradict common sense.
B.Adversary intelligence services spend larger operational budgets on producing deepfake multimedia than on disseminating text-based factual excerpts.
C.Social media platform algorithms prioritize sensational emotional keywords over factual verification timestamps.
D.Independent fact-checking agencies have recently increased their staff to accelerate the speed of public rebuttals.
Explanation: The author's core thesis is that verifying empirical truth alone fails to counteract disinformation because truthful data points stripped of context induce severe cognitive distortions. Showing that audiences presented with verified factual claims stripped of context draw substantially more distorted conclusions directly reinforces this causal mechanism, strongly supporting the claim that empirical veracity checks alone are ineffective.
4An investigation report on an unauthorized perimeter breach states: 'The intruder must have possessed internal administrative credentials. If the intruder had entered through the secondary airlock, the pressure sensor logs would have tripped. However, the pressure sensor logs showed zero anomalies. Furthermore, every individual who bypasses primary biometric checkpoints without physical forced entry either carries administrative credentials or exploits an undocumented software backdoor. Forensic analysis confirmed that no software backdoor was executed.' Which unstated assumption is required to conclude that the intruder possessed internal administrative credentials?
A.The intruder entered through the secondary airlock rather than the main gate.
B.The intruder bypassed primary biometric checkpoints without physical forced entry.
C.Internal administrative credentials cannot be duplicated by external hackers.
D.The pressure sensors were functioning at calibrated sensitivity during the breach.
Explanation: The argument's conditional states: 'every individual who bypasses primary biometric checkpoints without physical forced entry either carries administrative credentials or exploits a backdoor.' Because forensic analysis ruled out the backdoor, we can deduce credentials ONLY IF we know that the intruder did in fact bypass primary biometric checkpoints without physical forced entry. The passage never explicitly established this antecedent; hence, it is a necessary underlying assumption.
5A counter-intelligence assessment contains the following propositions: - If Officer K is assigned to Station Alpha, then Officer L is assigned to Station Beta. - If Officer M is assigned to Station Gamma, then Officer K is assigned to Station Alpha. - Either Officer M is assigned to Station Gamma or Officer N is assigned to Station Delta. - Officer L is NOT assigned to Station Beta. Which officer must be assigned to which station?
A.Officer K is assigned to Station Alpha.
B.Officer M is assigned to Station Gamma.
C.Officer N is assigned to Station Delta.
D.Officer L is assigned to Station Alpha.
Explanation: Let K, L, M, N represent the station assignments. Premise 1: K -> L. Premise 2: M -> K. Premise 3: M OR N. Premise 4: ~L. From K -> L and ~L, by modus tollens we deduce ~K. From M -> K and ~K, by modus tollens we deduce ~M. From M OR N and ~M, by disjunctive syllogism we deduce N (Officer N is assigned to Station Delta).
6Analyze the following statement by an arms control inspector: 'Whenever State Y accelerates uranium enrichment beyond 20%, it simultaneously increases procurement of dual-use maraging steel. Last month, State Y increased procurement of dual-use maraging steel. Therefore, State Y must have accelerated uranium enrichment beyond 20%.' Which of the following exhibits the exact same logical error as the inspector's argument?
A.Whenever a secure facility experiences a power outage, auxiliary generators start automatically. The auxiliary generators started automatically today; therefore, the facility experienced a power outage.
B.If the encryption key is compromised, all transmitted ciphertext is decryptable. The encryption key was not compromised; therefore, transmitted ciphertext is secure.
C.No unauthorized personnel are permitted in the SCIF. Person X is in the SCIF; therefore, Person X is authorized personnel.
D.All acoustic surveillance buoys are battery-powered. Device Z is battery-powered; therefore, Device Z cannot be an acoustic surveillance buoy.
Explanation: The inspector's argument has the form: If P then Q. Q is true. Therefore, P is true. This is the formal fallacy of Affirming the Consequent (후건긍정의 오류). The argument that auxiliary generators starting automatically proves a power outage occurred follows the exact same invalid deductive structure.
7Review the following intelligence hypothesis: 'State A's recent troop redeployment along Sector 7 is intended solely to deter an impending offensive by State B. Satellite imagery indicates that State A has constructed forward field hospitals, ammunition depots, and pontoon bridge staging areas.' Which of the following observations, if true, cast the most serious doubt on the hypothesis that the redeployment is solely defensive/deterrent?
A.State A's military doctrine stipulates that pontoon bridges and forward offensive logistics are maintained exclusively for cross-border power projection rather than defensive fortifications.
B.State B possesses superior air defense capabilities compared to State A.
C.State A recently concluded bilateral diplomatic consultations with neighboring allied states.
D.Sector 7 has experienced seasonal heavy rainfall that complicates tracked vehicle movement.
Explanation: The hypothesis asserts that the troop deployment is 'intended solely to deter' (purely defensive). Establishing that State A's own military doctrine designates pontoon bridges and forward logistics exclusively for cross-border power projection directly contradicts and undermines the claim of a purely defensive deterrent intent.
8Five analysts—P, Q, R, S, and T—are evaluating a classified dossier. Each analyst holds one distinct security clearance tier: Tier 1, Tier 2, Tier 3, Tier 4, or Tier 5 (Tier 5 is the highest). - P's clearance tier is higher than Q's. - R's clearance tier is higher than S's but lower than T's. - Q's clearance tier is higher than T's. Who holds the Tier 3 clearance?
A.Q
B.R
C.T
D.S
Explanation: From the given relationships: 1. P > Q 2. T > R > S 3. Q > T Combining all inequalities in order from highest to lowest: P > Q > T > R > S. Since there are exactly 5 analysts and 5 distinct tiers (Tier 5 highest, Tier 1 lowest): - Tier 5 (highest): P - Tier 4: Q - Tier 3: T - Tier 2: R - Tier 1 (lowest): S. Therefore, Analyst T holds the Tier 3 clearance.
9Passage: 'In intelligence collection, human intelligence (HUMINT) and signals intelligence (SIGINT) frequently produce conflicting assessments regarding adversary leadership intentions. Signals intelligence captures verbatim technical communications, yet it is highly vulnerable to deliberate spoofing and deceptive military communications plans. Conversely, while human sources can discern subtle psychological shifts and informal policy deliberations, their reporting is susceptible to subjective bias and fabrication. A synthesis protocol that prioritizes SIGINT solely due to its technical quantifiable nature systematically ignores the strategic deceptive value of deliberate electronic leaks.' What is the primary point advocated by the author?
A.HUMINT should always supersede SIGINT in assessing high-level leadership intentions.
B.Technical quantifiable data in SIGINT is inherently fabricated and unreliable.
C.Over-relying on SIGINT because of its technical quantification creates vulnerability to adversary electronic deception.
D.Intelligence agencies should discontinue SIGINT collection against closed autocratic regimes.
Explanation: The author argues that prioritizing SIGINT merely because it is technically quantifiable creates a systematic blind spot to deliberate electronic spoofing and deception plans. The statement that over-relying on SIGINT creates vulnerability to adversary electronic deception accurately captures the author's primary thesis.
10A counter-sabotage directive mandates: 'Every secure server rack must be equipped with both an active acoustic tamper sensor and a dual-spectrum thermal sensor. Any server rack that fails an acoustic sensor test must immediately be placed into quarantine. A quarantined rack cannot host live operational databases.' Rack-09 is currently hosting a live operational database. Which of the following must be true?
A.Rack-09 passed its most recent acoustic sensor test.
B.Rack-09 is not equipped with a dual-spectrum thermal sensor.
C.Rack-09 has never been quarantined in the past.
D.Rack-09 is immune to physical sabotage.
Explanation: We can trace the logic contrapositively: If a rack fails the acoustic test, it is quarantined (Fail -> Quarantined). If a rack is quarantined, it cannot host live databases (Quarantined -> ~Live). Thus, Fail -> ~Live. Taking the contrapositive: Live -> ~Fail (If it hosts a live database, it did not fail its acoustic sensor test). Therefore, Rack-09 must have passed its acoustic sensor test.

National Intelligence Service Grade 7 Recruitment Exam: Suggested Study Strategy

1Master formal logic fundamentals: practise identifying categorical syllogisms, contrapositives and common fallacies such as affirming the consequent and the undistributed middle.
2Hone data interpretation speed: practise percentage changes, weighted averages and multi-variable table comparisons under tight time constraints, since the NIAT is reported to be a speeded paper.
3Drill spatial visualisation: work on 3D cube folding, block projection elevation views and coordinate grid rotations until topological transformations become intuitive.
4Study the national security statutes: review the National Intelligence Service Act (Articles 4, 11, 13, 14, 17, 21), the Counter-Terrorism Act, the Protection of Communications Secrets Act (especially Article 7 on national-security interception) and the Security Affairs Regulations.
5Understand the intelligence cycle and tradecraft: learn the five phases of the cycle, the collection disciplines (HUMINT, SIGINT, IMINT, MASINT, OSINT) and structured analytic techniques such as Analysis of Competing Hypotheses.
6Train for the fitness stage alongside the written work: the 2025 and 2026 cycles scored the 20 m progressive shuttle run, push-ups and sit-ups by grade per event.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the National Intelligence Service Grade 7 recruitment examination?

It is the regular open recruitment (정기공개채용) the NIS runs to hire entry-level specific-category Grade 7 intelligence officers (특정직 7급). The 2026 cycles recruited across three fields: Intelligence (collection and operations, analysis), Science & Technology (software, AI, information security, communications) and Language. From 2026 the NIS moved from one intake a year to two.

What does the written stage consist of?

Candidates who clear document screening sit 국가정보적격성검사1 (NIAT1), a multiple-choice aptitude paper covering areas such as verbal logic, situational judgment, logic games, data interpretation, numerical reasoning and perceptual reasoning; 국가정보적격성검사2 (NIAT2), a personality inventory; and an essay — 일반논술 for the Intelligence and Language tracks, 전공논술 for Science & Technology. The Korean-history essay used until 2020 was replaced by a general essay in 2021.

How many questions are on the NIAT and how long is the paper?

The NIS does not publish either figure. Question papers are collected at the end of the sitting and past items are not released, so there is no official item count or timetable to cite. Press coverage of past sittings describes a single afternoon session of about six hours, and a 2023 specialist newspaper column put the NIAT at roughly 140 items with about 30 on intelligence studies and current affairs — useful context, but not an NIS publication.

Do I need an English score and a Korean history certificate?

An accredited English test score from one of TOEIC, TOEFL, TEPS, G-TELP or FLEX is compulsory for Intelligence and Language applicants and optional but bonus-scored for Science & Technology applicants; the qualifying level is set per field in each notice. A Korean History Proficiency Test certificate at Level 2 or above is a bonus-point item rather than an entry requirement, alongside speaking-test scores, second-language scores, martial arts dan certificates and ICT qualifications.

What changed in the National Intelligence Service Act?

The Act was fully revised on 15 December 2020. The provisions transferring investigative powers over anti-communist and national security offences (대공수사권) to the police took effect on 1 January 2024, leaving the NIS focused on overseas and North Korea intelligence, counter-espionage, counter-terrorism, international organised crime and cyber and space security under Article 4. Article 11 bans political activity by NIS staff and Article 21 makes a breach punishable by up to 7 years' imprisonment and up to 7 years' suspension of qualifications.

Is this practice question bank an official publication of the NIS?

No. This question bank is an independent English-language MCQ study adaptation developed by OpenExamPrep that preserves standard Korean intelligence and legal terminology. It is not affiliated with, sponsored by or endorsed by the National Intelligence Service, it does not reproduce NIAT items, and it is not a simulation of the real paper.
