About the Niigata Public High School Entrance Examination — Japanese (Kokugo) Exam
The Niigata Prefectural High School Entrance Examination in Japanese (Kokugo) tests lower-secondary graduates on reading comprehension of modern and classical texts, kanji, vocabulary and grammar, with a heavy load of written answers set to prescribed character counts. It has been built from four 大問 — 漢字の読み書き, 国語知識・国文法, 古文読解 and 説明的文章の読解 — in each of the last four sittings, and sets no stand-alone 課題作文. From the 令和8年度 (2026) cycle the selection structure comprises 特色化選抜 + 一般選抜 (学力検査 + optional 学校独自検査; in 2026 full-time only 新潟中央高校音楽科 実技) + 欠員補充のための2次募集 + 海外帰国生徒等特別選抜; the 特色化選抜 is abolished after 2026 and replaced by 学校設定枠 from 2027. The five-subject academic test is scored out of 100 points per subject (500 points total), and Kokugo sits 10:00-10:50 as the first paper. The 令和8年度 Kokugo average was 49.9 points, down 12.0 from 令和7年度's 61.9.
Assessment
50-minute paper worth 100 points, built from four 大問 — 〔一〕漢字の読み書き, 〔二〕国語知識・国文法, 〔三〕古文読解 and 〔四〕説明的文章の読解 (around 2,500 characters of expository text). There is no stand-alone 課題作文; the marks instead sit in 記述 answers written to set character counts inside the reading 大問, including the 論述型 item the 令和8年度 commentary flagged for a low correct rate. 漢文・漢詩 appear only in some years and were not set in 令和8年度. The five academic-test subjects together total 500 points.
Time Limit
50 minutes. Kokugo is the first paper of the academic test, sat 10:00-10:50 on 4 March 2026 (令和8年3月4日); 追検査 is on 9 March 2026.
Passing Score
No fixed pass mark. Admission is decided by each school from the 500-point five-subject academic test, the report card (調査書, 135 points = 9教科×5×3年), and any 学校独自検査, using one of the five 調査書:学力検査 weightings allowed by the 令和8年度 実施要項 — 7:3, 6:4, 5:5, 4:6 or 3:7 — both converted to 1000 then compressed. Some schools and departments also apply 傾斜配点, doubling the weighting of one or more designated subjects so the five-subject maximum rises above 500 points.
Exam Fee
2,200 yen for a full-time (全日制) course (入学考査料) and 950 yen for a part-time (定時制) course. A separate 入学料 of 5,650 yen (full-time) or 2,100 yen (part-time) is due at enrolment. This bank is an English-language multiple-choice study adaptation of the same syllabus content and cannot replace practice at writing those answers in Japanese.
