About the Nagasaki Public High School Entrance Examination — English Exam

The Nagasaki Prefectural High School Entrance Examination in English tests lower-secondary graduates on listening, reading, and written expression in English. Since the 令和7年度 cycle the general selection has been held in February, some content has been excluded from the examinable range as a result, and parts of the English and mathematics papers are set at two difficulty levels chosen by each receiving high school. Roughly one fifth of the whole academic test is now built around inquiry-style material drawn from everyday life and social issues.

Assessment

50-minute paper worth 100 points, comprising four 大問: リスニング (25 points), 対話文 with source material (18 points), 資料読解・対話文 (27 points), and 長文読解 (30 points). The listening test occupies roughly the first ten minutes. Each high school chooses either the A問題 or the more demanding B問題 version of parts of the English paper.

Time Limit

50 minutes (day 1 of the two-day 一般選抜 academic test)

Passing Score

No fixed pass mark. Admission is decided by each school from the 500-point five-subject academic test, the junior high school report card (調査書, 135 points across three years), and an interview (面接) held after the day-2 papers, with weights and any 傾斜配点 set school by school.

Exam Fee

2,200 yen for a full-time (全日制) course; the part-time (定時制) fee follows the national standard of 950 yen. Confirm both in the current 実施要領. (Nagasaki Prefectural Board of Education (長崎県教育委員会))

Nagasaki Public High School Entrance Examination — English Study Tips from Top Performers

1Confirm early whether your target high school uses the A問題 or B問題 version of the English paper, because the composition length requirement differs (10 or more words versus 20 or more).
2Practise reading a full page of continuous English at speed; the 長文読解 大問 alone carries 30 of the 100 points.
3Train on source material such as timetables, posters, and web pages, since two of the four 大問 pair a text with a chart or notice.
4Aim for part marks in composition by writing accurate short sentences with grammar you control, rather than attempting complex structures with spelling and agreement errors.
5Rehearse the listening section under time pressure: it is played once at the start and you cannot go back to it later in the 50 minutes.
6Drill the high-frequency third-year grammar that recurs across papers: relative pronouns, indirect questions, the passive, the present perfect, and comparison.
