1A new hire greets the first visitor of the day at reception. Which greeting is the standard workplace opening in Japanese business
as the first words to an outside visitor
with a bow, then the company and own name
C.「どうも。」 while remaining seated behind the counter
to the visitor, then asking the purpose of the visit
Explanation: For an outside visitor, the standard first 挨拶 is a standing bow with いらっしゃいませ and, when you were expecting them, お待ちしておりました, followed by your company and name. お疲れさまです is an internal workplace greeting, not a reception opening to a guest.
2Which 敬語 form is the appropriate 尊敬語 when telling a client that their section manager is in the meeting room?
Explanation: いらっしゃる is 尊敬語 for いる (to be present) when the subject is the client's manager. おります, 参ります, and 伺います are 謙譲語 and would lower the client's manager, which is the reverse of workplace 敬語.
3When you, as the host employee, go to a client's office, which verb is the appropriate 謙譲語 for your own going?
Explanation: 伺う is 謙譲語 for 行く/訪ねる when you visit the other party's place. いらっしゃる and おいでになる are 尊敬語 and must not be used for your own action.
4A visitor hands you a 名刺 (business card) at reception. Which action matches standard
A.Receive it with both hands, read the name and title, and place it above your own card on the table
B.Receive it with one hand and immediately put it in your trouser pocket
C.Write notes about the deal on the face of the visitor's card during the meeting
D.Fan the cards you have collected and deal them like a hand of cards to remember names
Pocketing a card at once, writing on its face, or treating cards casually shows disrespect.
5In a standard Japanese meeting room, where is 上座 (the seat of honor) for a visiting client?
A.The chair nearest the door, so the guest can leave quickly
B.The chair farthest from the door, often along the wall away from the entrance
C.Any chair on the window side, regardless of the door
D.The presenter's standing position at the whiteboard
Explanation: 上座 is the seat farthest from the entrance (and, if there is a 床の間, that side). 下座 is nearest the door, where the host sits so they can receive tea and callers. Seating a guest in 下座 is a common 来客 mistake.
6You will visit a client's office at 14:00. Which arrival timing is the standard
A.Arrive 30 minutes early and wait in the meeting room unannounced
B.Arrive about 5 minutes before the appointment and announce yourself at reception
C.Arrive exactly 15 minutes late to avoid seeming eager
D.Arrive 1 hour early and tour the office floors without an escort
Explanation: A client visit should land a few minutes early—commonly about 5 minutes—then check in at reception. Arriving far too early burdens the host; lateness and unescorted wandering break
7Which sentence uses 二重敬語 (stacked 敬語) that workplace 敬語 study treats as incorrect?
Explanation: おっしゃる is already 尊敬語 of 言う. お話しになる, お帰りになる, and ご覧になる are standard 尊敬語 patterns without stacking two honorifics on the same verb.
8When escorting a visitor to a meeting room, which walking position is standard
A.Walk behind the visitor in silence so they lead
B.Walk slightly ahead on the visitor's left (or as building custom requires), match their pace, and announce corners and doors
C.Walk far ahead and disappear around corners to 'test' whether they follow
D.Walk side-by-side holding the visitor's elbow without asking
Explanation: The escort walks a half-step ahead, usually on the guest's left, at the guest's speed, and calls out 曲がり角 and 段差. Letting the guest lead, vanishing ahead, or grabbing an arm without consent all fail
9A colleague says 「部長、これでよろしかったでしょうか」 after a decision that is still in the present. What is the 敬語 problem?
A.よろしい is never used with managers
B.Past-tense よろしかったでしょうか treats a current confirmation as if it were already finished, a common over-polite error
C.でしょうか cannot be used in any workplace question
D.部長 must always be replaced by あなた
Explanation: よろしかったでしょうか is a widespread 過剰敬語 that puts a present check into the past. For a live confirmation, よろしいでしょうか is the cleaner 丁寧語. Title 部長 is appropriate; あなた is not.
10Which 聞き方 behavior is appropriate while a client is explaining a complaint?
A.Interrupt at the first unclear word so the story never runs long
B.Look at the screen and type email while they talk, to 'save time'
C.Face the speaker, take notes, wait for a pause to confirm facts, and do not argue over feelings
D.Immediately explain why the client is mistaken before they finish
Explanation: Grade 2 話し方と聞き方のポイント and クレーム対応 both require attentive listening: eye contact, notes, and confirmation at pauses. Interrupting, multitasking, or rebutting mid-story blocks fact-finding.

Business Proficiency Test Jobpass (B検ジョブパス): Suggested Study Strategy

1Drill 報連相 as three separate acts: 報告 of results (especially bad news) to the person who gave the instruction, 連絡 of facts to everyone who needs them, and 相談 before you decide beyond your authority.
2Learn the Grade 3 8つの意識 as a closed set: 顧客・品質・納期・時間・目標・協調・改善・コスト. 納期 and 時間 are not the same item.
3Practice 敬語 pairs (いらっしゃる / 参る, おっしゃる / 申す) in visitor and telephone settings rather than as isolated vocabulary.
4For statistics items, compute year-on-year change as (this year − last year) ÷ last year, composition as part ÷ whole, and contribution as one unit's change ÷ total change.
5On Grade 2 and Grade 3, calculators are not allowed. Rehearse 損益計算書 and percentage arithmetic by hand.
6Read the official 出題範囲 on bken.sgec.or.jp and sit Japanese past papers from SGEC; this English bank is study, not a substitute sitting.
