The Jamaica PSRA security guard certification assessment is the knowledge component of the Private Security Regulation Authority's mandatory 80-hour basic training for security guards. How many hours of basic training does the PSRA require?
The PSRA requires 80 hours of basic training for security guards. Since 1 January 2016, guards must produce a certificate showing the hours completed, the date, and the PSRA-approved trainer's name and signature, and must be individually registered with the PSRA.
Do Jamaican security guards have the same powers as the police?
No. A private guard is not a police officer. Their powers are essentially those of a private citizen, exercised with the property occupier's authority. A citizen's arrest is only lawful when a serious offence has been witnessed, force must be reasonable and proportionate, and suspects must be handed over to the Jamaica Constabulary Force as soon as possible.
