Frequently Asked Questions
What exactly does the Patente Nautica D1 allow?
Under D.M. 133/2024 it allows navigation in daylight only, in inland waters and within six nautical miles of the coast, commanding natanti or imbarcazioni da diporto with a hull of up to twelve metres, or moto d'acqua within one mile of the coast, with propulsion power not exceeding 85 kW (115.6 CV).
Does the licence expire when the holder turns 18?
No. There is no upper age limit and the licence does not lapse. What changes is its scope: until the holder completes the eighteenth year it is limited to the command of natanti da diporto and moto d'acqua, and from eighteen it covers imbarcazioni da diporto up to twelve metres as well.
Is there a practical examination at sea for the D1?
No. The practical element is built into the course as individual navigation and engine-manoeuvring exercises, which must be completed before the final test. The assessment itself is the 15-question fitness quiz, passed with at least 12 correct answers in 30 minutes.
What is the alcohol limit when commanding a pleasure craft in Italy?
Article 53-bis of the Codice della Nautica da Diporto prohibits taking or keeping command of a pleasure craft in a state of intoxication and treats a reading above 0.5 grams per litre as intoxication, with fines and suspension of the licence rising in bands above 0.8 and 1.5 grams per litre.
Are OpenExamPrep questions the official ministerial quiz sheets?
No. The official list is the elenco unico nazionale approved by Decreto Dirigenziale MIT n. 62 of 18 April 2025, whose questions have three options. This is an independent four-option English-language practice bank written from the official course subjects and the underlying law, intended as a study aid rather than a reproduction or simulation of the official test.
