About the Italy LRC Marine Radio Exam
The Long Range Certificate (LRC) is the premier statutory Italian marine radio operator certificate under D.M. 25 settembre 2018, n. 134 for non-SOLAS vessels (pleasure craft and small commercial vessels) operating in all GMDSS sea areas (A1, A2, A3, and A4). It entitles the holder to operate MF/HF SSB marine radio stations, Digital Selective Calling (DSC) on all maritime bands, and maritime mobile satellite systems (Inmarsat and Iridium). The examination tests practical simulator handling across MF/HF and satellite equipment, radio wave propagation theory, maritime geography, distress procedures, and maritime English. OpenExamPrep provides an independent 100-question English-language MCQ study bank adapted to this syllabus.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between the Short Range Certificate (SRC) and the Long Range Certificate (LRC)?
The SRC is restricted to Sea Area A1 and covers only VHF and VHF-DSC equipment on non-SOLAS vessels. The LRC covers all four GMDSS Sea Areas (A1, A2, A3, and A4) and authorises the operation of MF/HF SSB transceivers, MF/HF DSC controllers, and satellite terminals (Inmarsat C, FleetBroadband, Iridium GMDSS). Furthermore, the LRC examination programme includes radio wave propagation theory, antenna tuning, and maritime geography (NAVAREAs and satellite footprints), which are not examined for the SRC.
Why is maritime geography examined on the LRC but not on the SRC?
Allegato 3 of D.M. 134/2018 closes the LRC programme with section D3.6, 'world geography with the main maritime routes and the related lines of communication', which has no counterpart in the SRC programme of Allegato 4. MIMIT's own examination page confirms this, listing the examined subjects as procedures and practical equipment handling, English, and geography — 'non per SRC'. In practice a long-range operator must know global Search and Rescue regions, NAVAREA/METAREA coordination, Inmarsat ocean regions (AOR-E, AOR-W, IOR, POR), and the limits of geostationary satellite coverage at roughly 70°N to 70°S, beyond which Sea Area A4 begins. The SRC is confined to coastal VHF coverage within range of a coast station.
What are the key distress frequencies examined for the LRC?
Key frequencies include MF DSC at 2187.5 kHz, MF radiotelephony at 2182.0 kHz, HF DSC distress frequencies (4207.5, 6312.0, 8414.5, 12577.0, and 16804.5 kHz), and HF radiotelephone distress frequencies (4125, 6215, 8291, 12290, and 16420 kHz). A fundamental rule tested is that ship stations must never acknowledge an MF or HF DSC distress alert using DSC; acknowledgment is strictly reserved for coastal stations.
How is the Italian LRC examination administered?
Since Decreto direttoriale 25 settembre 2025, the MIMIT examining commission conducts LRC examinations remotely via video conference. Candidates perform simulated operations on virtual VHF, MF/HF, and Inmarsat consoles connected to the Sala Nautica of the Istituto Superiore CTI, and answer oral questions on propagation, emergency protocols, and maritime English.
Are OpenExamPrep practice questions official ministerial questions?
No. The official MIMIT LRC exam consists of oral questions and practical simulator drills. OpenExamPrep publishes an independent English-language four-option MCQ study bank structured across the Allegato 3 syllabus of D.M. 134/2018. It is designed as an educational tool to test technical knowledge and practical decision-making.
