1Choose the correct option to fill in the blank: Neither the teacher nor the students ________ present at the meeting yesterday.
A.was
B.were
C.are
D.is
Explanation: When subject parts are connected by 'neither... nor', the verb agrees with the closer subject. Since 'students' is plural and the sentence refers to a past time ('yesterday'), 'were' is the correct past plural verb.
2Select the closest synonym for the word underlined in the sentence: The doctor was praised for his ubenevolentu nature and dedication to the poor.
A.hostile
B.kind
C.miserly
D.indifferent
Explanation: The word 'benevolent' means well-meaning, kindly, or charitable. Therefore, 'kind' is the closest synonym. The other options represent opposite or unrelated traits.
3Select the correct antonym of the word 'frugal'.
A.thrifty
B.wasteful
C.economical
D.careful
Explanation: The word 'frugal' refers to being sparing or economical with regard to money or food. The opposite of being economical is being 'wasteful' or extravagant.
4Fill in the blank with the most appropriate preposition: The suspect was accused ________ stealing the jewelry from the safe.
A.of
B.for
C.with
D.about
Explanation: The verb 'accused' is idiomatically followed by the preposition 'of' when indicating the crime or charge. Therefore, 'accused of stealing' is the correct formulation.
5Choose the correct article to fill in the blank: It was ________ honorable decision made by the committee to return the prize.
A.a
B.an
C.the
D.no article required
Explanation: The word 'honorable' starts with a silent 'h', meaning its initial sound is a vowel sound (ɒnərəb(ə)l). Indefinite articles before vowel sounds must be 'an' rather than 'a'.
6Fill in the blank with the correct conjunction: He was not only a brilliant scientist ________ a talented musician.
A.but also
B.as well as
C.and also
D.along with
Explanation: The correlative conjunction 'not only' works in tandem with 'but also' to join two parallel elements. Therefore, 'but also' completes the sentence correctly.
7Choose the option that correctly completes the sentence: Since she moved to Delhi in 2021, she ________ in the same school.
A.is teaching
B.has been teaching
C.taught
D.was teaching
Explanation: The use of 'Since' combined with a specific past starting point ('2021') indicates an action that started in the past and continues into the present. The present perfect continuous tense ('has been teaching') is the standard tense used for this context.
8Fill in the blank with the correct pronoun: They managed to complete the entire science project all by ________.
A.theirselves
B.themselves
C.himself
D.themself
Explanation: The plural subject pronoun 'They' requires the matching third-person plural reflexive pronoun 'themselves'.
9Identify the word with the correct spelling.
A.acomodation
B.accomodation
C.accommodation
D.acommodation
Explanation: The word 'accommodation' is correctly spelled with double 'c' and double 'm'.
10Fill in the blank with the correct word option: The school ________ explained the new rules of conduct to the assembly.
A.principal
B.principle
C.prinsiple
D.principality
Explanation: The homophones 'principal' and 'principle' are often confused. 'Principal' refers to a head of a school or organization, whereas 'principle' means a fundamental truth or rule. Here, the head of the school is meant.
