OpenExamPrep Practice Bank
Israel's government examinations in medical laboratory science are multiple-choice papers sat twice a year at Binyanei Ha'uma in Jerusalem and, from this year, taken on laptops, with separate examinations and syllabi for laboratory worker / academic laboratory worker status and for senior laboratory worker status. This 100-question set is independent English-language practice by OpenExamPrep across clinical biochemistry, haematology and coagulation, microbiology, transfusion medicine and immunology and laboratory quality management.

1In clinical enzymology, how does a reversible competitive enzyme inhibitor affect the kinetic parameters Vmax and Km on a Lineweaver-Burk double-reciprocal plot?
2When measuring diagnostic enzyme activities (e.g., AST, ALT, CK) in automated clinical chemistry analyzers, which reaction condition must be maintained to ensure zero-order kinetics?
3A serum sample from a patient presenting with crushing chest pain displays an inverted lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) isoenzyme pattern, where LD-1 activity exceeds LD-2 (the 'flipped' LD pattern). What clinical condition does this electropherogram classically indicate?
4An adult patient presents with an isolated elevation of total alkaline phosphatase (ALP) with normal transaminases and bilirubin. To distinguish whether the ALP elevation originates from bone or liver tissue using heat inactivation, what is the expected residual activity after incubation at 56°C for 10 minutes?
5A 45-year-old patient presents to the emergency department with acute epigastric pain radiating to the back 48 hours after symptom onset. Why is serum lipase measurement considered clinically superior to serum amylase in confirming acute pancreatitis?
6A comatose patient admitted with suspected toxic ingestion exhibits the following laboratory findings: Na+ 140 mmol/L, K+ 4.5 mmol/L, Cl- 98 mmol/L, HCO3- 12 mmol/L. What is the calculated serum anion gap (without potassium) and what type of acid-base disturbance does it indicate?
7A patient with severe multiple myeloma and a total serum protein of 13.5 g/dL has a serum sodium reported as 121 mmol/L on an automated analyzer using indirect ion-selective electrode (ISE) potentiometry. A direct ISE measurement on a blood gas analyzer reports a sodium of 139 mmol/L. What analytical phenomenon accounts for this discrepancy?
8An arterial blood gas (ABG) sample drawn from an intensive care patient with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) yields: pH 7.34, pCO2 62 mmHg, HCO3- 32 mmol/L, pO2 65 mmHg. How should the clinical laboratory evaluate this acid-base profile?
9A laboratory technologist notes a visible air bubble occupying approximately 10% of an arterial blood gas syringe that was delivered on ice 20 minutes after sampling. How will exposure to room air affect the measured pO2 and pCO2 values?
10A routine serum biochemistry sample arrives from an outpatient clinic. The analyzer reports a potassium of 6.8 mmol/L and an optical hemolysis index (H-index) corresponding to 350 mg/dL free hemoglobin. What is the correct laboratory action and underlying mechanism?
About the Medical Laboratory Scientist Exam
The Israeli Medical Laboratory Sciences Licensing Examination (בחינת רישוי לעובדי מעבדה רפואית אקדמאים) is the statutory qualifying examination established under the Public Health Regulations (Medical Laboratories), 5737-1977 (תקנות בריאות העם (מעבדות רפואיות), התשל"ז-1977). Passing this examination is required to obtain official recognition of status (תעודת הכרה במעמד) as an academic medical laboratory worker (עובד מעבדה רפואית אקדמאי) from the Ministry of Health, granting independent clinical testing authority in hospital, HMO (קופות חולים), and reference diagnostic laboratories across Israel. The Ministry lets candidates sit the examination in Hebrew, Arabic, English, Russian, French or Spanish, but anyone sitting it in a language other than Hebrew must first prove Hebrew proficiency at ulpan level ג'; this practice bank is an independent English-language study adaptation authored by OpenExamPrep and is not an official translation or government examination pool.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the passing score and format of the Israeli Medical Laboratory Licensing Exam?
The Ministry of Health publishes the format - a multiple-choice ('American-style') paper, now taken on laptops rather than printed question and answer sheets - together with the sitting dates, the translation options and the appeal rules, For the academic medical laboratory worker paper the Ministry states that it contains 100 multiple-choice questions drawn from the published syllabus, but it does not publish the duration or a numeric pass mark. Any candidate who fails may register for the review day within 7 days of the results message, inspect the paper for an hour and appeal within 10 days of that inspection. Separate examinations and syllabi apply to laboratory worker / academic laboratory worker status and to senior laboratory worker status.
Is this practice bank an official exam simulator or official translation?
No. The official Israeli licensing examination is written in Hebrew and offered by the Ministry of Health in Hebrew, Arabic, English, Russian, French or Spanish, with proof of Hebrew proficiency required from candidates who sit it in another language. This question bank is an independent English-language educational adaptation authored by OpenExamPrep to assist academic graduates in reviewing laboratory science theory, diagnostic interpretation, and Israeli regulatory guidelines. It is not an official government exam pool.
Who is eligible to take the examination in Israel?
Holders of a bachelor's degree in medical laboratory sciences, or of a degree in medical sciences, life sciences, chemistry, agriculture, biotechnology, veterinary medicine, pharmacy or nutrition (or an MD), who complete a supervised internship (סטאז') in a Ministry-recognised medical laboratory - six consecutive months full time for a bachelor's degree, four months for a master's and three months for a PhD. Graduates whose medical laboratory sciences degree already included the internship are exempt from both the internship and the examination.
What legal authority governs medical laboratory workers in Israel?
Medical laboratories and their professional personnel operate under the Public Health Regulations (Medical Laboratories), 5737-1977 (תקנות בריאות העם (מעבדות רפואיות), התשל"ז-1977), supervised by the Division of Medical Laboratories within the Israeli Ministry of Health.
What happens if a candidate fails the licensing examination?
A candidate who fails may register and pay the statutory examination fee set by the Ministry of Health again for a later sitting; there is no published cap on attempts. Any candidate who fails may register for the review day within 7 days of the results message, inspect the paper for one hour and submit a written appeal within 10 days of the inspection; the Ministry publishes the appeal committee's decisions after each sitting.
