OFTEC training guide

OFTEC OFT15-108D certifies solid fuel stove and room-heater installation, commissioning and servicing in Ireland. Assessment combines multiple-choice theory, PAWS worksheets and practical tasks at an approved centre, with re-assessment every five years. Since March 2022 OFTEC is Ireland's sole solid fuel installer registration body, allowing registered technicians to self-certify compliant work under the competent person scheme. OFT15-108W extends scope to wet central-heating connections and requires OFT15-108D plus a recognised plumbing qualification. Course fees are set by each approved centre; OFTEC registration is a separate annual or multi-year fee.

1Before starting solid fuel installation work in a customer's home, what is the first priority under OFTEC health and safety guidance?
A.Begin flue liner installation immediately to minimise visit time
B.Assume standard PPE is sufficient without assessing the specific hazards
C.Carry out a site-specific risk assessment and confirm safe access, lighting and isolation arrangements
D.Skip documentation until after the appliance is commissioned
Explanation: OFTEC solid fuel training emphasises assessing the work environment before starting. A site-specific risk assessment identifies hazards such as asbestos, confined spaces, working at height and electrical isolation needs.
2Which item of PPE is essential when handling soot, ash or dismantling a solid fuel flue system?
A.Hearing defenders only
B.Safety goggles without any hand protection
C.Suitable respiratory protection and gloves to reduce exposure to fine particulates
D.No PPE is required if the appliance has been cold for one hour
Explanation: Soot and ash contain fine particulates and combustion residues. OFTEC and general HSA guidance require appropriate RPE and gloves when cleaning flues or handling ash, even after cooling.
3When must safe electrical isolation be confirmed before working on a solid fuel appliance with electrical controls or a fan?
A.Only when replacing the main house consumer unit
B.Before removing panels, testing components or disturbing wiring
C.After the customer signs the completion certificate
D.Isolation is never required on room heaters because they are low voltage
Explanation: OFTEC solid fuel courses cover safe electrical isolation for appliances with fans, controls or auto-ignition aids. Power must be isolated and proved dead before intrusive electrical work.
4A technician discovers suspected asbestos insulating board around an old fireplace opening. What is the correct action?
A.Remove the board carefully with a standard dust mask
B.Seal the area with paint and continue installing the stove
C.Stop work, do not disturb the material, and advise the customer to arrange a licensed asbestos survey
D.Ignore it if the stove manufacturer allows close clearances
Explanation: Disturbing asbestos without proper controls is a serious health hazard. Competent installers must stop and refer to licensed specialists rather than disturb unknown materials.
5Why should hot ash never be placed in a plastic wheelie bin or combustible container?
A.It makes the bin too heavy for collection
B.Ash has no heat retention once removed from the firebox
C.Plastic bins are required to store ash for recycling
D.Residual heat can reignite surrounding combustible waste and cause a fire
Explanation: Ash can remain hot enough to ignite combustible refuse for many hours. OFTEC servicing guidance requires cooling ash in a metal container with a tight lid before disposal.
6Working on a roof to install a twin-wall flue terminal requires additional controls because:
A.Falls from height and manual handling of chimney sections create significant injury risks
B.Roof work is exempt from health and safety law for heating technicians
C.Only scaffolding is ever required; ladders are always prohibited
D.Flue terminals never need access above the roofline
Explanation: Twin-wall systems often terminate above the roof. Technicians need fall protection, stable access equipment and a rescue plan in line with work-at-height regulations.
7Carbon monoxide (CO) exposure risk during solid fuel work is reduced by:
A.Closing all windows to stabilise the flue draught
B.Ensuring adequate ventilation during spillage tests and never running an appliance in a sealed room without designed air supply
C.Relying on the customer to smell CO
D.Blocking spare vent openings to increase efficiency
Explanation: CO is odourless. Testing and commissioning must be done with correct ventilation. Sealing a room or blocking vents can allow dangerous CO accumulation during spillage or commissioning checks.
8Manual handling of a heavy steel stove should be planned by:
A.Using mechanical aids or additional trained personnel and clearing a safe route before lifting
B.Dragging the stove across the finished floor without protection
C.One person lifting if the customer helps steady the hearth
D.Leaving packaging underneath to slide it into position
Explanation: Solid fuel appliances are heavy. OFTEC training aligns with manual handling regulations: plan the lift, use aids where needed and protect finishes.
9When using power tools to core-drill a ventilation opening, what control is most important?
A.Drilling as fast as possible to reduce noise duration
B.Checking for hidden services and using appropriate dust extraction or local exhaust
C.Drilling without marking because vents are always in external walls
D.Using any drill bit size that fits the vent grille
Explanation: Core drilling risks striking cables or pipes and creates silica dust. Service locating and dust control are basic competent-person precautions.
10After identifying an immediately dangerous solid fuel installation with CO spillage into the room, the technician should:
A.Leave quietly to avoid worrying the customer
B.Adjust the damper and leave without further action
C.Complete the service because the customer requested it
D.Make the situation safe, isolate or shut down the appliance, warn occupants and record the unsafe situation
Explanation: OFTEC training covers unsafe situations: protect occupants first, shut down or isolate the appliance, ventilate if safe to do so and document findings. Do not leave a known dangerous installation operating.
