BKS PTN Barat

SMMPTN-Barat is the joint in-person computer-based entrance examination for 27 state universities, conducted by the BKS-PTN Barat consortium. The 195-minute test covers seven TPS and Literasi subtests and uses CEEB scoring; skills-based programs also require a portfolio. Registration costs Rp 375.000. The official assessment is principally in Indonesian with an English literacy subtest. This independent bank uses English framing while retaining Indonesian where that language is the tested skill; it is not an official translation or format simulation.

1All maritime logistics hubs in Western Indonesia require certified deep-water ports. Port Kuala Tanjung has a certified deep-water port. Which of the following deductions is logically valid based strictly on these premises?
A.Port Kuala Tanjung might be a maritime logistics hub in Western Indonesia, but this status is not guaranteed by the premises alone.
B.Port Kuala Tanjung is definitively certified as a maritime logistics hub in Western Indonesia.
C.No facility other than a maritime logistics hub can operate a certified deep-water port.
D.Port Kuala Tanjung cannot be a maritime logistics hub because deep-water certification is insufficient.
Explanation: The premise states that having a certified deep-water port is a necessary condition for being a maritime logistics hub. Satisfying a necessary condition makes the outcome possible, but inferring that Port Kuala Tanjung must be a hub commits the converse fallacy of affirming the consequent.
2If a state university research project secures BKS PTN Barat joint funding, it must publish its findings in an indexed academic journal. Research Project Alpha did not publish its findings in an indexed academic journal. What conclusion follows necessarily?
A.Research Project Alpha published its findings in a regional newspaper instead.
B.Research Project Alpha did not secure BKS PTN Barat joint funding.
C.Research Project Alpha secured joint funding but received an exemption from publication.
D.Research Project Alpha was conducted outside of Western Indonesia.
Explanation: By the logical rule of modus tollens, denying the consequent ('did not publish in an indexed academic journal') necessitates the denial of the antecedent ('did not secure joint funding'). Therefore, Research Project Alpha cannot have secured BKS PTN Barat joint funding.
3Premise 1: At least one traditional wooden fishing vessel from Bengkulu operates in the surveyed fleet. Premise 2: All such traditional wooden fishing vessels receive annual safety inspections. Premise 3: Some inspected vessels have solar-powered navigation lights. Which conclusion follows necessarily?
A.All traditional wooden fishing vessels from Bengkulu are equipped with solar-powered navigation lights.
B.No traditional wooden fishing vessel from Bengkulu is equipped with solar-powered navigation lights.
C.Some vessels that receive annual safety inspections are traditional wooden fishing vessels from Bengkulu.
D.Every vessel equipped with solar-powered navigation lights is a traditional wooden vessel from Bengkulu.
Explanation: The first premise establishes that at least one traditional Bengkulu vessel exists in the fleet. The second places every such vessel in the inspected set. Therefore at least one inspected vessel is a traditional Bengkulu vessel. The solar-light premise does not establish whether that vessel has solar lights.
4Consider the statement: 'If a wetland conservation zone in Riau experiences severe drought, then local peat soil flammability increases.' Which of the following statements is logically equivalent to this conditional statement?
A.If local peat soil flammability increases, then the wetland conservation zone in Riau experienced severe drought.
B.If a wetland conservation zone in Riau does not experience severe drought, then local peat soil flammability does not increase.
C.Wetland conservation zones in Riau experience drought only when peat soil flammability decreases.
D.If local peat soil flammability does not increase, then the wetland conservation zone in Riau did not experience severe drought.
Explanation: In formal propositional logic, a conditional statement 'If P, then Q' is logically equivalent solely to its contrapositive, 'If not Q, then not P'. Negating both terms and reversing their order yields: 'If local peat soil flammability does not increase, then the wetland conservation zone did not experience severe drought.'
5A botanist observed five mangrove restoration plots along the coast of Belitung. Plot A grew 12 cm, Plot B grew 14 cm, Plot C grew 16 cm, Plot D grew 18 cm, and Plot E grew 20 cm under identical salinity and soil acidity levels. If this observed pattern continues linearly, what is the most plausible inductive prediction for Plot F grown under the same conditions?
A.Plot F will grow approximately 22 cm.
B.Plot F will grow exactly 26 cm due to accelerated biological maturation.
C.Plot F will experience stunted growth below 10 cm.
D.Plot F will grow exactly 18 cm because coastal mangrove growth plateaus after five plots.
Explanation: The observed sequence of measurements (12, 14, 16, 18, 20) exhibits a constant common difference of +2 cm per plot. Applying standard inductive generalization, the most reasonable projection for the next plot in the sequence is 20 + 2 = 22 cm.
6Five university delegates—Ahmad, Budi, Citra, Dewi, and Eko—are seated in a row of five adjacent chairs facing the stage at a BKS PTN Barat symposium. - Citra sits immediately to the right of Budi. - Ahmad sits at one of the ends of the row. - Dewi does not sit next to Ahmad. - Eko sits immediately between Ahmad and Budi. Who sits in the middle chair (position 3 from left to right)?
A.Citra
B.Budi
C.Dewi
D.Eko
Explanation: If Ahmad is placed at the far left (Seat 1), Eko must sit in Seat 2 (between Ahmad and Budi), placing Budi in Seat 3. Citra sits immediately to Budi's right in Seat 4, leaving Seat 5 for Dewi. In this arrangement, Dewi does not sit next to Ahmad, perfectly satisfying all constraints and leaving Budi in the middle chair.
7All members of the Sumatra Biodiversity Consortium are licensed field ecologists. Some licensed field ecologists conduct research on the Sumatran tiger in Gunung Leuser National Park. None of the researchers conducting research on the Sumatran tiger in Gunung Leuser National Park approve of monoculture agricultural expansion into buffer zones. Which conclusion must be true?
A.All members of the Sumatra Biodiversity Consortium disapprove of monoculture agricultural expansion into buffer zones.
B.No licensed field ecologist approves of monoculture agricultural expansion into buffer zones.
C.Some licensed field ecologists disapprove of monoculture agricultural expansion into buffer zones.
D.All researchers who disapprove of monoculture agricultural expansion are members of the Sumatra Biodiversity Consortium.
Explanation: Since some licensed field ecologists belong to the group of researchers studying the Sumatran tiger in Gunung Leuser, and none of those tiger researchers approve of monoculture expansion, it directly follows that some licensed field ecologists disapprove of monoculture agricultural expansion.
8A meteorology station in Padang records rainfall trends across four consecutive agricultural seasons. Whenever sea surface temperature anomalies in the eastern Indian Ocean exceed +0.5°C, coastal rainfall decreases by at least 25%. In the current season, coastal rainfall in Padang did not decrease by at least 25%. What conclusion can be drawn with certainty?
A.Coastal rainfall in Padang must have increased by more than 25% over the seasonal average.
B.Sea surface temperature anomalies in the eastern Indian Ocean were exactly +0.5°C.
C.Agricultural yields in Padang reached record highs due to optimal soil moisture.
D.Sea surface temperature anomalies in the eastern Indian Ocean did not exceed +0.5°C.
Explanation: This follows the valid deductive argument form of modus tollens (denying the consequent). The conditional states that an anomaly > +0.5°C leads to a rainfall decrease of >= 25%. Because rainfall did not decrease by at least 25%, the antecedent must be false; thus, the temperature anomaly did not exceed +0.5°C.
9Four student campus organizations—Debate Club, Robotics Team, Choir, and Environmental League—must schedule their annual general meetings from Monday through Thursday, with exactly one organization meeting per day. - The Debate Club meets before the Choir. - The Robotics Team meets on Wednesday. - The Environmental League does not meet on Monday. On which day does the Debate Club meet?
A.Monday
B.Tuesday
C.Wednesday
D.Thursday
Explanation: The Robotics Team is fixed on Wednesday. The Environmental League cannot meet on Monday, so it must meet on Tuesday or Thursday. If Debate met on Tuesday, Choir would be forced onto Thursday, leaving Monday with no eligible group (since Environmental League cannot meet on Monday). Therefore, Debate Club must meet on Monday, allowing Environmental League to take Tuesday and Choir to take Thursday.
10Over the last decade, every time a new toll road opened in South Sumatra, freight travel duration between regional agricultural centers and provincial seaports declined by at least 30%, while local toll revenue met target projections within 18 months. An infrastructure analyst asserts: 'Therefore, building any new highway will permanently eliminate regional logistics bottlenecks.' Which of the following best identifies the reasoning flaw in the analyst's conclusion?
A.It commits a formal affirming the consequent fallacy by confusing necessary and sufficient conditions.
B.It overgeneralizes from specific historical highway completions to an unwarranted absolute claim about all future highways.
C.It relies on circular logic by assuming that freight travel duration and toll revenue are identical metrics.
D.It creates a false dichotomy by suggesting that freight travel duration is either reduced by 30% or completely unaffected.
Explanation: The analyst observes positive historical correlations on specific toll roads and leaps to an absolute, sweeping claim ('any new highway will permanently eliminate regional logistics bottlenecks'). This represents a classic hasty overgeneralization that fails to account for induced traffic demand, port congestion, or differing regional conditions.
